What I'd like to see is a provision in PCM radios to easily lock in your failsafe settings while you're flying. That way you might be able to experimentally find a set of control positions that seem like they will land your model in the least destructive manner, and then just hold the sticks and press a button to save them to the failsafe memory.
My JR XP8103 won't do this. You have to guess what the best control positions are while the model is on the ground. I wonder if any other radios will.
