I had built a wood spar for a 2M and full pedalled it. The spar caps were 1" wide at the center, 1/4" thick, vertical balsa between them, tapered to a point at the wing tip. (I did use a 0.074" thick carbon plate joiner, but steel would work just about as well)

Wood fuse and tail feathers. Tail feathers had the LE and TE done the same way as the spar, 3/4" wide in the center, 3/8" wide at the tip. The fuse had a plywood box built to transfer the tow hook pull to the wing hold downs. All up weight with full 1/16" balsa wing skins and two HS-81's for spoilers was 42 oz.

If I was trying to keep it lighter I could probably get it down to 35, to launch on a 2M high start. The 3M rubber was much more fun on this one.

When it comes to high-tech on builds, it's a lot easier for the average builder to buy a few cf strips than it is for them to find and select the proper wood in a wing.

And no one likes to build fuselages.

As long as I can make mine out of EPP.....
Actually I would like to see a 3 function catagory rather than RES.
It would be fun to have an open class with limitations, I.E.
something like:
100"
no carbon.
no glass.
no aramids.
3 functions.
Maybe no ARFs.
This would leave room for creativity in design, but it wouldn't
allow any high tech materials.

I would design EPP kits for this.....

Well, since one design events are usually intended to be a low cost design: how about just scheduling a Gentle Lady contest? Besides, the needed radio
gear would be real cheap.

They're low cost and they fly nicely. Who doesn't like flying a GL?
