Plus, you undoubtedly have a lot of third party "tags"--small code snippets--all of your website to get your analytics tools and other software to work. How do you streamline that process? Last month, San Diego-based Tealium (www.tealium.com) announced a healthy, $10.5M funding round for tag management, helping marketing departments with that effort. We spoke with Ali Benham, one of Tealium's co-founders, to learn more about what tag management is, and why the company's market has suddenly become so interesting. First off, what is tag management? Ali Benham: Very briefly, tag management is about (More...) http://bit.ly/Ne2g3l --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Activision's Pitfall Returns ---- Are you old enough to remember the popular Pitfall! adventure came on the Atari 2600? Well, Pitfall! is back, thanks to a reboot by Activision, which released a new version of the game yesterday for the Apple iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. Pitfall inspired the whole genre of jump-and-run games (for the iPhone set, think "Temple Run"). The new Pitfall! is "inspired by the original 1982 classic", Activision said. The new game comes out of Activision's Leeds, UK studio. Although Activision did create the original jungle-jump-and-run adventure, and many titles followed in the same genre, it does look like the firm's new title will have to stand on its own merits: at least one, early review of the game on iTunes complimented the game as being and "Excellent Temple Run-like" game. Prolacta Tops $1M In Philanthoropic Donations ---- Monrovia, California-based Prolacta Bioscience, the venture-backed company which is turning donated breast milk into human milk fortifier for premature babies, reported this week that it has donated more than $1M to various charitable organizations over the past five years. The firm makes donations in the name of mothers who contribute their excess milk to the company. Prolacta said that it has donated more than $406,000 to Susan G. Komen for the Cure, and $61,000 to Make-A-Wish, among other organizations. Prolacta takes and purifies those human milk donations, converting them into a number of compounds, including human milk fortifier which is fed to premature infants. The use of human milk helps avoid serious side effects that can occur with premature infants if they use cow-based milk. Prolacta is venture backed by such companies as Health Evolution Partners, Alta Partners, DFJ Frontier, Arcturus Capital, DFJ Mercury, Funk Ventures, Phillip Capital, Gideon Hixon Fund, and Draper Associates. Postcard On The Run Raises $1.8M ---- Los Angeles-based Postcard On The Run, the developer of mobile apps which let people send their mobile phone photos to people as real, printed postcards, has raised $1.8M in an ongoing funding round, according to a regulatory filing from the company. The filing indicates the company is in the midst of raising $2.3M in a round. Postcard On The Run is the startup headed by former MySpace exec Josh Brooks. No details of the funding have yet been announced by the company. Postcard On The Run's mobile software runs on both the iPhone and Android, and lets users send their photos to friends. The service also helps users gather the postal addresses of their contacts via its Postal Gopher feature. The company says that its real postcards make a real keepstake out of digital photos, which people can post on their fridge, share with friends, or display at work--something that can't be done with a digital photo. http://www.socaltech.com/intelligence/?action=showdeal&id=44652 Stickam Debuts Premium Membership ---- Los Angeles-based live broadcasting site Stickam said this week that it has launched a new, VIP membership program, which will let users on the site better promote themselves. The site--which allows anyone with a web camera to broadcast their own, live video shows--said the new program will include better placement in guests lists of chat rooms, better visibility on the site, and an ad-free experience on the service. Stickam said the new service will cost $3.99 per month, or $39.99 for a full year. Stickam operates an online, live streaming site which lets anyone view or broadcast themselves to the world. The company also provides its service as a white-label product to professional broadcasters. SendGrid Hiring In Anaheim ---- Cloud-based email delivery startup SendGrid, one of the companies out of the TechStars accelerator, said this week that it is accelerating hiring at the firm, including at the firm's Anaheim location. The startup--which is backed by Foundry Group, Highway 12 Ventures, Bessemer Venture Partners and others--lists software engineering, big data, customer support, online marketing, and other positions in Anaheim, a location it added in August of last year. It's unclear when the firm started ramping its local operations, however, the company has over 100 employees, and co-founder and current CTO Tim Jenkins is in the Los Angeles area, and co-founder Isaac Saldana also is in Orange County, according to his LinkedIn profile. SendGrid is based in Boulder, Colorado. SendGrid develops cloud-based, email delivery software which helps businesses better deliver their email, by providing APIs for managing email delivery. Sonos Ties Into Amazon Cloud Player ---- Sonos, the developer of wireless, whole-home audio systems which stream music from the Internet or your computer, has further extended its music service support to Amazon Cloud Player, the cloud music service of Amazon.com. Amazon and Sonos said Thursday morning that customers of Amazon's cloud music system can now stream their entire collection of music to the Sonos Wireless HiFi System. Amazon is the latest, Internet-based music service to connect into the Sonos system, which now has connections into dozens of online music services. Amazon's cloud music service allows consumers to store their entire music collection online, including both tracks acquired at Amazon, as well as those uploaded by users to the service. Amazon said that its customers have been asking the company to add Sonos to the list of compatible Cloud Player devices ever since the service was launched. Zao Combines Employee Referrals, Social Gamification ---- A new, Orange County startup, Zao said yesterday that it has launched a new service, which combines employee job referrals with social gamification. The firm said its service provides businesses with tools to generate and manage employee referrals, integrating such social sites as Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter, and provides social gaming features such as a leaderboard to highlights referrals by employees. Topic: "Word of Mouth in the Modern World - Selling in a Tempest" Times of adversity create the greatest opportunities. If business people know what to do they would judiciously exploit the resources available, but they are not necessarily trained to hear the subtle and complex, but not vague customer message for developing a more effective value proposition. The Great Recession is 'bigger" than The Great Depression, with 40% of collage graduates unable to find a job, with institutions of all kinds failing in every which way, while people and corporations with capital realize greater gains and record profits unheard of in the history of the United States. In these times when nothing is as it was and technology has changed everything we have to use unusual tactics and unconventional and counterintuitive countermeasures to reach our goals and objectives in what seems to be a fire storm.
