How Kidworth Is Spurring Kids To Become Entrepeneurs, with Rudy DeFelice
----
How do you make it easy for kids to learn how to be entrepreneurs--and
not only learn about it, but actually go out and create a business?
Los Angeles-based Kidworth (www.kidworth.com) is looking to both help
kids learn about entrepreneurship, and more importantly, make it easy
for them to set up an online store, sell their services or products,
and even handle things like collecting payments via credit card. We
spoke with Rudy DeFelice, founder of the site and a local serial
entrepreneur, to hear about the vision for Kidworth and it's mission
of creating millions of young entrepeneurs.

What exactly is Kidworth?

Rudy DeFelice: Kidworth is the easiest place to launch a busines son
the Internet. We're focused on the youth market, teens primarily.
We're trying to give them (More...)

Insights and Opinions: The Odd Couple: Angels and Accelerators
----
Southern California has the one of the largest gathering of organized
angel investment groups, and a huge crop of startup accelerators:
there's only one problem, which is they don't naturally work together.
For our Insights and Opinions section today, Steve Reich, an angel
investor and advisor, gives his take on the subject in his editorial,
The Odd Couple: Angels and Accelerators.

At a recent accelerator event on the West Side, a friendly young
founder told me that he had been coached by his mentor not to talk to
Angel groups. As a Pasadena Angel, I wanted to be shocked, but I
wasn’t. The Angel funding process can be arduous. But as a community,
we have to figure out how Angels can effectively participate in the
development of accelerator-based companies. With the VC ranks
shrinking, founders need to tap every source of capital out there.
Building ties between accelerators and Angels is a key part of the
solution.

The conflict is built in. The entrepreneurs in startups are trained to
go fast and run lean. Angels tend to evaluate companies at a leisurely
pace, and ask many questions. It’s no wonder Oscar and Felix don’t get
along. (Continued...)

Elcelyx Therapeutics Adds $4M
----
San Diego-based Elcelyx Therapeutics, a developer of
biopharmaceuticals aimed at both the weight loss and diabetes area,

Series B equity funding round. The new funding came from Kleiner
Perkins Caufield & Byers and Technology Partners. The company said
that it has now raised a total of $20M in funding. The new funds will
go towards clinical trials for its two product candidates. Elcelyx is
working on compounds which address the sense of fullness that patients
feel in their gut. The company is aiming at both developing a
nutritional supplement as well as a product specifically for patients
with Type 2 diabetes.

Quest Debuts Windows Azure Monitoring Software
----
Aliso Viejo-based Quest Software announced this morning that it has
rolled out a new software package for monitoring Windows Azure
applications. The firm said its new package, Foglight for Windows
Azure Applications, is a software-as-a-service product for performance
monitoring of applications running in the Azure cloud, Microsoft's
cloud computing service. Pricing on the new software was not
disclosed. The new app provides both current and historical
availability information, a browser-by-browser view of performance
issues, and other information.

Kurion Names Chairman
----
Irvine-based Kurion, the venture-backed developer of nuclear and
hazardous waste disposal technology, said this morning that it has
named Ralph DiSibio as its Chairman of the board. DiSibio was most
recently at Washington Energy & Environment, a firm involved in
nuclear waste treatment and isolation. He has also served at Parsons
Power and Westinghouse Electric Company, among other companies.
DiSibio replaces Josh Wolfe of Lux Capital, who remains a director.
Kurion's water purification and nuclear waste removal technology is
being used at the Fukushima nuclear plant in Japan.

Rubicon Project Beats Google In Advertising Reach Report
----
Los Angeles-based Rubicon Project said Friday that it has passed
Google in the latest, comScore Media Metrix monthly ranking of Ad
Focus properties. Rubicon reports that the the July 2012 comScore
ranking found that Rubicon Project now reaches 96.2% of the U.S.
Internet audience, or more than 212 million visitors, which surpasses
Google's Ad Network reach by more than 6 million visitors. Rubicon's
advertising network and tools are used by web publishers to optimize
the return on their online advertising, by automatically steering ad
space to the best ad network for their site.

Burner's App Ditches Unwanted Callers
----
Have you ever wish you could hand someone your phone number, but just
let them use it once or twice before it disappeared? You can do just
that with a brand new app for the iPhone, Burner, released by a Los
Angeles company last week. The app--which costs $1.99 in the App
Store--allows iPhone users to create disposable phone number on
demand, something which could be useful handing your phone number to
the guy you just met at a bar, the person on Craigslist you want to
sell your couch to, or having a phone number available on your eBay
listing. The app--created by Ad Hoc Labs--lets users create as many,
disposable phone number as you want, and allows users to destroy those
numbers at any time. Ad Hoc Labs was founded by Greg Cohn and Will
Carter; Cohn was previously at Yahoo, and Cohn at Nokia.

How Broadcom Taps Israel For Technology Growth, Innovation
----
How is Irvine-based Broadcom continuing to grow its business? By
acquisitions, it seems. Broadcom has acquired at least 48 companies
since 1999. As an unintended side effect, those acquisitions have made
Broadcom a major player in Israel's high tech industry, according to
the article from ZDNet, where the firm has acquired 11 companies in
the last four years. The article says that Broadcom has about 800
employees in Israel.

Zillow Planning To Hire 100 In Irvine
----
Orange County's latest, high tech employer, Zillow, launched a grand
opening of its new offices on Michelson Drive last week, saying that
it plans to hire up to 100 people in its new office in the location.
Zillow, which operates the online real estate site known for its
"Zillow Zestimates", had said in April that it would be opening up a
new location in the OC, looking to tap into what it says is a "highly
talented local job market." The firm is taking advantage of both
Orange County's strength in the high tech industry, as well as deep
roots in real estate and consumer data. Zillow's initial job forays in
the area look to be focused on customer support, human resources and
recruiting, inside sales, and program management.

Blizzard Entertainment's Battle.net Hacked
----
Irvine-based Blizzard Entertainment said late Thursday that there was
"unauthorized access" of the firm's Battle.net service. Blizzard said
the unauthorized access exposed email addresses associated with
Battle.net accounts in all regions outside of China, including
scrambled passwords, answers to personal security questions, and other
information related to mobile and dial-in authentication. Blizzard
said it did not believe those hackers gained access to credit card and
other payment data.

August 15, Costa Mesa -- OCAMA Signature Speaker Series - Peter Kraus, UCLA
Anderson School of Business. Topic: "Word of Mouth in the Modern World -
Selling in a Tempest"
Times of adversity create the greatest opportunities. If business people
know what to do they would judiciously exploit the resources available,
but they are not necessarily trained to hear the subtle and complex, but
not vague customer message for developing a more effective value
proposition. The Great Recession is 'bigger" than The Great Depression,
with 40% of collage graduates unable to find a job, with institutions of
all kinds failing in every which way, while people and corporations with
capital realize greater gains and record profits unheard of in the history
of the United States. In these times when nothing is as it was and
technology has changed everything we have to use unusual tactics and
unconventional and counterintuitive countermeasures to reach our goals and
objectives in what seems to be a fire storm. See
