The publicly held firm said it will repurchase 1.65M shares of its own stock, including 1,152,338 shares of its Class C common stock from Mission Ventures, and 500,000 shares of Class B common stock from US Venture Partners. (More...) http://bit.ly/RCmLZz Local Corporation Debuts New Digital Marketing Service ---- Irvine-based Local Corporation has debuted a new digital marketing software suite aimed at local businesses this morning. The firm said its new Launch by Local product is aimed at small and medium-sized businesses, and helps customers with digital marketing. The product includes web hosting, social media, mobile, content creation, website creation, SEO, and other services for those businesses. The new tool will start at $249 per month for SMBs. BlackLine In Expansion, Opens Five New Offices ---- Los Angeles-based BlackLine Systems, the developer of financial close software used by companies to automate balance sheet reconciliation for companies, is in a major expansion, saying today that it has opened up offices in five cities worldwide. The company said it opened up offices in Atlanta, Chicago, London, New York City, and Portland, Oregon, on top of existing offices in Sydney and in Los Angeles. The firm said the new offices come as a result of international growth for the company. The firm said it saw revenues grow by 50 percent in 2010 and 2011, and expects a similar growth rate this year. BlackLine is headed by THerese Tucker. GraphEffect Rolls Out API, New Release ---- In an outreach to developers, Santa Monica-based GraphEffect, the developer of social marketing software headed by James Borow, is announcing today that it is opening up an API to its platform for developers. (More...) http://bit.ly/NkrN5l Paragon Sees OEM Demand For Drivers ---- Irvine-based Paragon Software, the developer of data storage and mobile applications and software, says that it is seeing "unprecedented growth in demand" for its file sytsem driver technology from Android, Linux, and embedded device manufacturers. According to the firm, it has seen a significant number of OEms using its drivers to support exFAT, NTFS, and HFS+ file systems as a part of a move by manufacturers to support SDXC and Windows/Mac USB drives as part of their devices. Paragon did not say what the wins translate to financially, but said it now supplies its drivers to such manufacturers as Acer, ASUS, Buffalo, Cisco Systems, Hitachi Ltd., NETGEAR, Logitech, LG Electronics, Western Digital, EMC/Iomega, Seagate, and Lenovo. Aperio Acquired By German Firm ---- Vista-based Aperio, the developer of digital pathology equipment, is being acquired by German company Leica Biosystems, the companies said Tuesday. Financial details of the buy were not announced by the companies. The two said the move will help the companies to grow and expand into the global Life Science and Healthcare market. Aperio is venture backed by HLM Venture Partners, Galen Partners, Advanced Technology Ventures, Acadia Woods Partners and BlackRock Alternative Advisors. Path.To Opens Job Matching Service In Los Angeles ---- Path.To, which operates a service to match up companies with software engineers, interactive designers, and other IT professionals by matching personalities, skills, and social graph, said Tuesday that it has expanded support into the Los Angeles area. The firm--which pitches itself as the "eHarmony for Jobs"--pointed to the rise of technology venture capital in Los Angeles for the expansion into the market. The company uses its own proprietary algorithms to match employers with prospective employees. The Florida company already offers its services in San Francisco, New York, Chicago and Boston, and also just opened up access in Denver and Boulder. Swagsy Raises $100K ---- Swagsy, an online, celebrity-focused service which it tying together celebrities and e-commerce, has raised $100,000, in a convertible note, angel funding round. Name of the investor was not disclosed. The Los Angeles startup was founded by Jamie Freed, Miron Lulic, and Grant Cohen. Swagsy is looking to create a service which allows fans of celebrities to follow their favorite celebrities, and receive special offers on products endorsed by those celebrities. The company said in a blog post that the angel funding round came after a long process of trying to raise $1M from venture investors, and where in finally decided to just go back to building the business instead of chasing investors. http://www.socaltech.com/intelligence/index.php?action=showdeal&id=44869 Inktank Opens Office In Silicon Valley ---- Los Angeles-based Inktank, the company which is providing enterprise level support for the open source, Ceph distributed storage system, announced yesterday that it has opened up a new office in Sunnyvale, as it continues to hire and expand. Ceph said the new branch office will work with the company's Los Angeles headquarters to help develop and support the Ceph storage software. Ceph is an open source, distributed storage system which is integrated with the Linux kernel. The firm said the new office comes as it looks to tap into the talent base in the Bay Area. The company also says it is hiring in the Los Angeles area. Ceph is a spinout of Dreamhost. Anatomy of a Successful Pitch: DogVacay At Vator Splash LA ---- Are you a startup wondering what makes a successful pitch to investors? FamilyFinds--also backed by Matt Coffin--sent out a 50 percent-off offer for the first, monthly delivery on Wittlebee's clothing to its mailing list this morning. The subscription clothing service offers up a selection of kids' clothing to parents, all fit to a child's age and size, with new clothing delivered every month. The startup is one of a number of subscription-based ecommerce businesses out of Science Inc. WittleBee is headed by Sean Percival. OCTANe LaunchPad Firms Raise More Than $25M ---- OCTANe, the Orange County-based organization helping to bolster the high tech industry and entrepreneurs, reported Tuesday morning that in the first half of 2012, companies participating in its startup accelerator have raised a total of $26.8M in funding. The organization's LaunchPAD programs help early stage technology companies with mentoring and othe resources, as well as access to investment capital. According to OCTANe, investments in firms included 7.75M for OncoSec Medical, $2M for MelRoK, $1.27M for Cirro, $1M for Pivotshare, as well as investments in Stroma Medical ($840K), BioPhotas ($650K), Harbor MedTech ($610K), and others. The group said the investment amounts were an increase of 30 percent over the same period last year. Boingo Wireless Extends Deal With Google Offers ---- Wi-fi network provider Boingo has extended a sponsorship deal it has with Google Offers, the daily deals business of Google, to an additional 24 locations across the country. According to Los Angeles-based Boingo, the deal now includes a total of more than 250 locations which will be available for free thanks to Google. Financial details of the deal were not announced.
