MYMUSAIC Gets Funding, Launches Online Photo Slideshow Service

Los Angeles-based MYMUSAIC, a new startup, said this morning that it
has just closed an angel funding round, and launched an online
software service to turn photos and music into movies. The startup did
not provide details on its angel round. MYMUSAIC's site allows users
to import photos from Facebook or upload them from a persona library,
select music, and then automatically creates a video matched to the
tempo and beat of that music track. The firm said that accounts are
free. MYMUSAIC is headed by Alec Meikle.

j2 Acquires New Zealand Firm
----
Los Angeles-based j2 Global, the messaging and communications service
provider, has made yet another acquisition this morning, saying that
it has acquired the New Zealand business of Zintel Communications.
Financial terms of the buy were not disclosed. Zintel Communications
is a cloud voice services provider. j2 said the buy follows the
acquisition of Zintel's Australian operations in March. J2 has been
quite active acquiring international communications and cloud services
firms over the last year, having acquired at least a half dozen
companies.

SheKnows Taps Alanis Morissette For Video Blog
----
Los Angeles-based women's content site SheKnows, which is owned by
Evolve Media Corp., said today that it has inked a deal with
singer/songwriter Alanis Morissette, to include a video blog (vlog)
from Morissette while on tour. SheKnows said that Morissette has
joined its video blog Mommalogues, as a guest celebrity mom, where she
will vlog about music and motherhood. Financial details of the deal
were not disclosed.

Ceres Names Former Undersecretary of Energy To Board
----
Thousand Oaks-based Ceres, the developer of seeds for the energy and
biofuels market, announced yesterday that it has added former BP Chief
Scientist and Undersecretary of Energy for Science, Steven E. Koonin,
to its board of directors. Koonin was Undersecretary for Science at
the U.S. Department of Energy from May 2009 until November 2011, and
prior to that was Chief Scientist at BP focused on renewable energy.
He also served as a professor of theoretical physics at Caltech from
1975 until 2006. The company said that its board now includes 12
members.

International Rectifier To Close El Segundo Plant
----
El Segundo-based International Rectifier, a developer of analog and
power ICs, said Wednesday that it is shutting its El Segundo,
California fabrication facility, and laying off staff. The firm did
not say how many employees would be affected by the move. The firm
blamed weak demand in its markets for the move, which came after it
its results showed a 15 percent decrease in year-to-year, fourth
quarter results. The firm cited weak end-market demand, particularly
in Asia and Europe, for the move, and also said it is looking at
resizing its Newport, Wales fabrication facility. The firm said the
closure in El Segundo will save it approximately $10M a year when
complete.

My Damn Channel Raises $1.0M
----
Los Angeles-based My Damn Channel, the online comedy site headed by
Rob Barnett and Warren Chao, has raised $1.0M as part of an ongoing,
$3.0M funding round, according to a regulatory filing from the firm.
Details on the new funding have not yet been announced by the company.
The site produces original content for the web, both on its own site
as well as distributed through other sites, including Wainy Days,
Horrible People, You Suck at Photoshop, and other series. The firm is
one of a number of companies now producing--with venture
backing--professionally produced content specifically for a web
audience. The company has previously raised capital from Intuitive
Venture Partners, Okapi Venture Capital, and Sunshine Wireless, which
all look to be involved in the ongoing round.

Report: Fisker Automotive Delays Surf

It looks like Anaheim-based electric car manufacturer Fisker
Automotive is buckling down and trying to smooth out the rough ride it
has had launching the Karma sedan, and has decided to "back burner"
efforts on the Surf, the wagon version of the Karma. (More...)

AudioMicro Inks Deal For Windows Live Movie Maker Link
----
In a move which expands its distribution, Los Angeles-based
AudioMicro, the provider of stock audio clips and music, said it has
inked a partnership with Microsoft to include a link to its service
via Windows Live Movie Maker. AudioMicro said Microsoft is including
it in the newly updated release of the software, used by Windows users
to create their own videos. The deal is the second with Microsoft for
AudioMicro, which is headed by Ryan Born; the firm already has a deal
with Microsoft Office 2010 for similar links to its content.
AudioMicro offers up royalty-free, stock music and sound effects. The
company is venture backed by DFJ Frontier and Fotolia.

Fuhu Finds Funding For Android Tablet For Kids
----
El Segundo-based Fuhu, which is developing an Android tablet
specifically aimed at kids, has raised $10M in venture debt. The
funding was announced by venture debt provider ORIX Ventures. Fuhu
develops the nabi tablet, which it says is specifically designed for
teaching kids state-standardized, core curriculum for kids in the
K-5th grade. Specific terms of the venture debt deal were not
announced. Fuhu's nabi is based on Android 4.0, and is bundled with
educational material, games, ebooks, and other apps specifically aimed
at kids, and is sold at Walmart, Best Buy and GameStop in stores, and
also online at Target and Amazon.com.

Hulu Refreshes Site, Focuses on More Vivid, Graphic Experience

Hulu, the online video site, has made a major update to the site
today, rolling out a more vivid, graphical interface which highlights
scenes, TV shows, movies, and more on the service. Among updates made
by Hulu, the site is now highlighting new additions to the site, the
previous evening's TV episodes, and editorial picks by its team
through full-page, eye-catching graphics. in addition, the site has
enhanced its search tools and layout, made it easier to follow series
through its video player, and more. The new site--currently available
through a special preview site--is expected to roll out to its users
over the next several days. Hulu also released a walkthrough of the
changes in a video on its site.
