Stockr Raises $1.5M For Social Networking Site For Investors
----
Stockr, the social networking service aimed at financial investors
based in Los Angeles, has raised $1.5M in a seed funding round, the
firm said yesterday. The company said the round came from Personal
Capital, The Doyle Investment Group, and Adam Townsend. Stockr, which
was co-founded by Vinny Jindal, Tim Symington, and Brendon Crawford,
helps investors by connecting them with news, information, discussion,
and more about stocks. The firm is looking to create a service which
avoids stock trading rumors, partly by using real names and
authentication via Facebook Connect.

Response Genetics Gets $8.8 Million in Private Placement

Los Angeles-based Response Genetics, a publicly held provider of
molecular diagnostic testing services for cancer, announced this
morning that it has raised $8.8M in a private placement of its stock.
The new funding came from GlaxoSmithKline and an un-named, existing
stockholder. GlaxoSmithKline is a new investor in the company.
Response Genetics said the new funding will go towards "buiolding a
sustainable business" and grow its top line revenue.

Row 44 Racks Up 350th Install Of In-Flight Wireless
----
Row 44, the provider of in-flight Wi-Fi and entertainment systems
based in Westlake Village, reported Wednesday that it has surpassed
350 aircraft installations of its system. Row 44's systems used a
satellite network to connect users in-flight with the Internet, and
also include entertainment and video on demand and streaming services.
In related news, the firm said it has increased its satellite capacity
over North America, Southern Europe and North Africa, doubling the
number of satellite transponders in its network.

Cricket Gets iPhone 5
----
San Diego-based Cricket Communications, the provider of pre-paid
wireless services, announce today that it will be offering the newly
announced iPhone 5. Apple's newest iPhone was announced Wednesday,
featuring a 4-inch high resolution Retina display, 8 megapixel camera,
and other features. Cricket said it will begin offering the iPhone 5
to its customer in select markets beginning Friday, September 28th.

Edmunds.com Plans Hackathon
----
Santa Monica-based Edmunds.com is joining the "Hackathon" bandwagon,
and is getting set to launch a two-day event at its headquarters to
brainstorm and solve problems around the car buying process, the
company said today. Edmunds.com did not say how much it plans to award
for its hackathon, which it says it will be opening up to auto
industry insiders and other "innovative thinkers". Innovative
developers with a penchant for creating new applications have had
quite a number of local opportunities to demonstrate their coding and
thinking skills lately, including one offering $30,000 in prizes for
creating an app around discouraging texting while driving (from AT&T,
held last week); a event dangling $20,000 in cash a few months ago at
the Silicon Beach Fest; $10,000 offered earlier this year by Viddy for
apps connecting to its video sharing product; and even one for the
creatively minded from Crowdfunder, offering $25,000 earlier this year
for the best startup video. Edmunds.com hasn't released the details of
its own hackathon effort, but said it will be posting it within the
next few weeks.

GlySens Scores Funding For Glucose Monitoring Devices
----
San Diego-based GlySens, a startup developing implantable, long-term
glucose monitoring sensors, has scored an investment round, according
to investor West Health Investment Fund. Financial terms of the
investment were not disclosed. La Jolla-based West Health announced
the funding along with the an investment in Virginia-based RxAnte, a
provider of medication adherence and predictive analytics tools for
the health care market. The funding came out of the $100M West Health
Investment Fund, which was launched in October of 2011.

CallFire Debuts New Platform
----
CallFire, the provider of text messaging and voice applications APIs
which is run by Dinesh Ravishanker, has launched a new platform, the
company said this week. The firm said it has created a
"next-generation" platform, bulit from the ground up, which includes
such new features as allowing customers to interact with businesses
using SMS and text messages; new call tracking and analytics tools;
opti-in voice broadcasting; and interactive voice response (IVR)
capabilities. CallFire provides programming interfaces which can be
used to create text and voice messaging applications.

Telcentris Opens New York Data Center
----
San Diego-based Telcentris, which offers up cloud communications
services, said Wednesday that it has opened up a new data center on
the East Coast. The company--which runs VoxOx and VoxOx In Business,
two unified communications services--said the new data center is at an
Equinix colocation facility in New York. The firm said the new data
center is its first on the East Coast.

Amazon Studios Releases Digital Comic
----
An effort in Los Angeles by Amazon.com to find screenplays has
resulted in a new digital comic series, the firm said yesterday,
Blackburn Burrow. Amazon said the new venture from Amazon Studios will
produce four issues of the comic, inspired by a screenplay optioned by
Amazon from Jay Levy. Amazon said the digital comic will be a "way to
test stories and learn about fan engagement". The company is looking
at potentially turning the story into a full blown movie. Amazon
Studios is run by Los Angeles, and serves as the production company
for video content for Amazon. Amazon said that Blackburn Arrow
revolves around a Civil War veteran and battles against supernatural
horrors.
