Interview with Alec Meikle, MYMUSAIC
----
ired of that same-old, boring photo slideshow? How do you create a
better, more exciting presentation of your photos? MYMUSAIC
(www.mymusaic.com), a Los Angeles startup, thinks it has figured that
out, and recently launched a service which automatically matches
photos to the beat of music, creating an online video of your photos
and music. We spoke with founder Alec Meikle to learn about what the
service offers and how it's different than what's available from other
software.

How did the idea for the service come about?

TVC Capital Closes $75M Fund
----
San Diego-based private equity firm TVC Capital, which is led by Jeb
Spencer and Steven Hamerslag, has closed on a new, $75M growth equity
and buyout fund, the firms said today. The new fund, TVC Capital II
came from private equity fund of funds, institutional asset managers
and family offices. TVC said the new fund will focus on investments
and acquisitions of software companies and software-enabled service
firms. TVC's prior investment include Accordent Technologies (Acquired
by Polycom) and Del Mar Datatrac (sold to Ellie Mae). In the Accordent
deal, TVC invested a mere $4M in the firm, which was sold for $50M, a
move which resulted in the firm getting the "Most Efficient Capital
Exit of the Year" award from the Los Angeles Venture Association last
year.

SpaceX Wins Satellite Launch Contract
----
Hawthorne-based SpaceX, the commercial rocket and spaceflight firm
headed by Elon Musk, has signed a new satellite launch deal this
morning. SpaceX and European firm SES said they are in an agreement to
launch three, additional SES satellites on the SpaceX Falcon 9 or
Falcon Heavy. Financial details of the deal were not disclosed. The
two said the first mission under contract is for 2015. SES is a
commercial satellite operator, and already has a contract to launch a
satellite with SpaceX in 2013. SES operates a network of 51,
geostationary satellites.

Vitesse Expands In India
----
Camarillo-based Vitesse Semiconductor, which develops chips for the
high performance networking market, said today that it has expanded
its sales presence in India. The firm said it has linked with WPI
Group, a subsidiary of semiconductor distributor WPG Holdings, to
handle distribution of its complete product line in India. Vitesse
said the move comes as the country of India has been projected to
become the second largest mobile broadband market in the next four
years. Vitesse said its chips are being used in 4G/LTE and cloud
computing.

Ostendo Technologies Wins $58.3M Contract
----
Carlsbad-based Ostendo Technologies, a developer of solid state
lighting and display technology, reported this morning that it has
scored a $58.3M contract from the Air Force Research Laboratory. The
firm said the 4-year contract was funded by the Office of the Director
of National Intelligence (ODNI) and Intelligence Advanced Research
Projects Activity (IARPA), and will focus on developing holographic,
3D displays. Ostendo says it is working on a project to create high
performance, holographic 3D workstation display systems, viewable by
multiple people.

FixUp Launches To Help Users Consult Experts Via iPhone
----
How do you get help with that plumbing project you're working, or some
minor assistance with that auto repair? A new, iPhone
app--FixUp--debuted today to try to help users with those kinds of
questions, saying it will connect users to a network of skilled,
service professionals via iPhone video. The app--the brainchild of Los
Angeles-based StartupMinds--lets users connect with local
professionals, such as plumbers, electricians, and others--to get
expert answers to simple issues for a negotiated per-minute rate.
FixUp said that if users aren't able to solve their problems, users
can then schedule an in-person visit from those experts. StartupMinds
said it has previously helped accelerate such firms as Telesign and
Ringadoc.

MOGL Hits $1M In Cash Back To Users
----
San Diego-based MOGL said yesterday that its members have now earned
more than $1M in cash back for using the firm's loyalty program. MOGL
offers up cash back payments for users who register their credit cards
and visit participating restaurants. The startup, headed by Jon
Carder, provides a 10% cash back to members who register their credit
or debit cards with the company, and visit participating restaurants.
The startup has a significant number of participating restaurants in
Southern California, with at least 500 restaurants in its hometown of
San Diego, and many more nationwide. MOGL is venture backed by Sigma
Partners, Austin Ventures, and Avalon Ventures.

Exagen Diagnostics Finds $5.3M
----
Exagen Diagnostics, a venture-backed developer of molecular
diagnostics testing which operates its main laboratory in Vista,
California, said it has raised $5.3M. The funding was led by Tullis
Health Invesotrs, and also included Sun Mountain Capital, Cottonwood
Technology Fund, Mesa Verde Venture Partners and Epic Ventures. Exagen
develops diagnostic testing services for rheumatoid arthritis and
other conditions; the firm's CLIA-certified and CAP-accredited lab is
located in Vista, with its headquarters in Albuquerque, N.M.

Boingo Offers Free, Nationwide Wi-Fi With Google Play
----
In what looks to be one of the biggest free Wi-Fi deals so far from
Boingo Wireless, the operator of a network of Wi-Fi hotspots said
Tuesday morning that it will be offering up free, Wi-Fi at more than
4,000 of its hotspots thanks to a deal with Google Play. Boingo
Wireless said that the sponsored Wi-Fi location will include 15
airports, and thousands of hotels, shopping malls, cafes, and
recreational areas. Google Play is the online store for Android
applications and content run by Google. Financial dteails of the deal
were not disclosed. Boingo said the free access will last through the
end of September, and  comes due to the firm's recent acquisition of
Cloud Nine Media. The free Wi-Fi will be avialable for Android phones,
tablet, and Macintosh and Windows laptops--but not iOS devices.

Inktank Gets $1M For Storage Software
----
Los Angeles-based Inktank, the open source software firm developing
the distributed storage system Ceph, said yesterday that it has raised
$1M in a convertible note financing. The financing came from Mark
Shuttleworth, who founded Canonical, the open source services firm
which supports Ubuntu. Inktank is a spinout of hosting provider
Dreamhost, which is also based in Los Angeles, and develops
distributed storage system software which it tied into the Linux
kernel. The firm said the funding will go to grow the firm and to
support the Ceph community.

Hulu Upgrades Plus On PlayStation 3
----
Los Angeles-based Hulu upgraded the firm's Hulu plus app on the
PlayStation 3 Monday, adding new features such as highlighting shows
that users watch; larger and more vivid artwork; better ways to find
content; and more. Hulu, which offers streaming of television shows
and movies, has been offering up Hulu Plus on the PlayStation 3 for
the last two years; the service costs $7.99 a month. Hulu said that
the PlayStation 3 is the first living room platform it will be rolling
out the new Hulu Plus experience on. The new look and feel matches the
updated look-and-feel rolled out on Hulu's website last month.
