PayDragon Takes On Frictionless Mobile E-Commerce

enormously ambitious goal: totally frictionless, mobile e-commerce.
Chan is one step closer to that--or perhaps, as close as you're going

Gores Group Buys Astadia
----
Los Angeles-based private equity firm The Gores Group has acquired
cloud computing consulting and systems integrator Astadia, Gores said
Monday. Financial details of the transaction were not announced.
Astadia will be merged with Idea, a current portfolio company of The
Gores Group. Astadia serves enterprise customers, helping them build
cloud-based software; the firm says it has 2,600 clients using its
services. Astadia was based in Dallas, Texas.

ecoATM Eyes iPhone 5 Release
----
Aside from the legions of Apple fans who are just waiting to get their
hands of the new iPhone 5, San Diego's EcoATM appears as eager as
consumers for the new device. According to the startup, which operates
a network of automated kiosks to handle electronics trade-ins, it is
rapidly expanding its kiosks in malls nationwide and on the east coast
due to the iPhone 5. The firm says it is expanding its network to make
it easier for consumers to cash in their older phones, to trade up to
the new, iPhone 5. ecoATM said it will have installed about 300 kiosks
nationally by the end of the year. ecoATM's kiosks let consumers
instantly trade in their electronics, using an automated system which
uses machine vision and other diagnostics to evaluate equipment and
provide cash or store credit.

Sense4Baby Gets Funding For Wireless Fetal Monitoring

San Diego-based Sense4Baby, a brand new starting spawned out of the
West Health Institute, has licensed a wireless fetal monitoring system
from West Health, and moved into that firm's new incubator. (More...)

Synthetic Genomics Buys Patent Portfolio
----
La Jolla-based genomics firm Synthetic Genomics said yesterday that it
has purchased a bundle of patents from Febit Holdings GmbH. Financial
details of the patent purchase were not disclosed. Synthetic Genomics
said the purchase includes the worldwide rights to three families of
patents and patent applications related to synthetic genomic
technologies, and also included equipment, technical support, and
"know-how" for implementing the technology. The firm said the patents
will specifically help in commercialization of its products in the
area of algae-based food and nutritional products, biofuels,
biochemicals, synthetic vaccines and clean water.

RealD Expands In Russia
----
Los Angeles-based RealD, the developer of 3D movie projection
technology, said today that it has opened up a new office in Russia.
The firm said its new Moscow office will help increase its presence in
the country, and will provide sales, customer service, exhibitor
relations and operations. RealD, which provides equipment used in
projecting 3D movies, also has international offices in London, Tokyo,
Hong Kong, and Shanghai.

Evolution Robotics Acquired By iRobot
----
Pasadena-based Evolution Robotics, the Idealab robotics technology
firm headed by Paolo Pirjanian, has been acquired by iRobot. iRobot
said that it will pay $74M for Evolution Robotics, which is best known
for its Mind automatic floor cleaning robots. Evolution Robotics said
the purchase will be in cash, and will provide it with intellectual
property, engineering talent and new products. Evolution Robotics was
backed by Idealab, and also had raised funding from CMEA Ventures, The
Quercus Trust of California, and Vodafone. The firm has a long
history; it was originally spawned out of Idealab back in 2001,
focusing on developing pure robotics technology and not retail
products; it decided to hit the retail market in 2010 with the Mint
floor cleaning robot, after variously applying its technology to toys,
shopping cart scanners, cell phones, and the military.

JetBlue Sets Rollout Plans For ViaSat-Powered In-Flight WiFi
----
A report today says that airline JetBlue is expected to announce the
details of its new, in-flight wireless service which taps the service
of Carlsbad-based satellite communications provider Viasat. The
service announcement--first disclosed via an internal, JetBlue
employee email announcement, apparently will provide much higher
speeds and throughput than existing in-flight Wi-Fi providers. The
wireless service is expected to debut in the first quarter of 2013.
Viasat and JetBlue have previously announced a relationship to tap
Viasat's satellite network for high speed Internet on JetBlue's
planes, most recently saying in 2011 that JetBlue will install its
service 170 aircraft with Ka-band airborne terminals and services.

JMI Equity Re-Ups On BigMachines
----
BigMachines, a developer of cloud-based software for product
configuration, pricing, quoting, and proposals, has scored funding
from San Diego private quity investor JMI Equity. Financial details of
the new funding were not disclosed. The funding round came from Vista
Equity Partners, JMI Equity, as well as new investors Salesforce.com.
Bigmachines said its software can be used for everything from
semiconductors to potato chips.

Nik Software Acquired By Google
----
San Diego-based Nik Software, the developer of a popular set of photo
filters and plug-ins for photo editing, has been acquired by Google.
Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. Nik Software
has its corporate headquarters in San Diego, and also has operations
in Germany. The firm's photo filters connect into Adobe Photoshop,
Lightroom, and Aperture, and includes such products as Dfine, Viveza,
HDR Efex, and more.

Modesat Acquired By Xilinx
----
Modesat, a developer of wireless backhaul communications chips and
products, which has its North American operations headquartered in San
Diego, has been acquired by Xilinx, the two said today. Financial
terms of the buy were not disclosed. Modesat was founded in 2005 in
Estonia, and develops backhaul modem solutions for microwave, E-band
and NLOS (non-line of sight) markets. The companies said that Modesat
had fifteen employees, who will be joining the Xilinx Communications
Business unit. Xilinx said that Modesat's San Diego offices will
continue operations, as will its Estonian offices.
