Today, we have an article from Greg Akselrud of Stubbs Alderton & Markiles, LLP, who talks about some of his thoughts on deciding between co-marketing and a joint venture: Co-marketing arrangements present a wealth of opportunities to expand your business. They allow business owners to expand distribution and revenue while leveraging another’s strengths, all while providing a better offering to users. But at a certain point, a longer term initiative presents itself - the joint venture. Joint ventures offer many advantages to traditional co-marketing arrangements, but also bring significant disadvantages and risks. What is co-marketing? Co-marketing takes many forms. When online, co-marketing can mean two parties marketing each other’s products and services, co-branding a single product or service under a combined brand or using each party’s (Continued...) http://bit.ly/R8RxHs --------------------------------------------------------------------------- NetZero Offers Up Free, Wireless 4G Data To Facebook Friends ---- Woodland Hills-based NetZero Wireless, the 4G wireless service run by United Online, announced that it has launched a campaign to give away free 4G wireless data to Facebook users. NetZero said it will offer one free gigabyte of wireless data per month to its current users to give away to their friends on Facebook, via a new "Netzero 4G Data Share" program. NetZero is offering free, 4G wireless---powered by Clearwire--with data transfer of up to 200MB/month, in addition to tiered plans starting at $9.95 for 500MB/month. The program appears to be an attempt to create virality in awareness of its service, and comes only a week after NetZero started seeing competition from another, free 4G wireless carrier--FreedomPop--down the street. Verenium Gets $10M In Credit Facility ---- San Diego-based industrial biotechnology company Verenium announced yesterday that it has received $10M in a revolving credit facility. The new credit line comes from Comerica Bank. Verenium said the credit facility will allow it to borrow up to $8.4M against its foreign and domestic receivables, and also covers an existing $1.6M letter of credit to its landlord. The firm said it will pay interest at the daily LIBOR plus 4.75% on the line of credit. Verenium develops enzymes used in food, fuel, and other markets. ServiceNow Updates IT Automation Software ---- San Diego-based ServiceNow has released a new version of its enterprise IT automation software, the company announced this morning. World of Warcraft Hacked By Players ---- World of Warcraft, the massively multiplayer online game run by Irvine-based Blizzard Entertainment, suffered an in-game hack which resulted in a mass (virtual) bloodbath, where thousand and thousands of players and characters were slaughtered over the weekend. The hack--which apparently was quickly fixed by the firm--resulted in piles and piles of skeletons across the game due to a "kill hack". Blizzard Entertainment, which is a unit of Activision Blizzard, suffered a more serious external hack back in August, which exposed Battle.net email accounts and scrambled passwords to unknown hackers. This particular hack appears to be of the sport of "game hacking", where players attempt to gain advantage by finding bugs or quirks in online games, versus one driven by criminal or financial gain. Moviepilot Sets Up Office In Venice, Hires Two Execs ---- Moviepilot, which operates an online movie discovery site, said last week that it has opened up an office on Abbot Kinney in Venice, California, as part of its expansion into Los Angeles. The firm--which has been booting up operations in LA since May--said it has hired Amy Elkins as EVP Strategy and Advertising, and Amy Smith as Director of Advertising. Smith was previously at Amazon Media Group, working with IMDb, Amazon, Mobile and Kindle with entertainment accounts. Moviepilot is headed by Tobi Bauckhage, and was started in Germany; the firm took $7M in May to help it expand and build its office here in Los Angeles. The site provides recommendation and information on upcoming movie titles. Green Dot Shares Hit By Amex, Walmart Deal ---- Monrovia-based prepaid card provider Green Dot was battered in the markets Monday, after Walmart and American Express announced a deal to create a new, prepaid card called Bluebird. Walmart and Amex said the new, reloadable prepaid card will have no monthly, annual, or overdraft fees and be distributed via Walmart's stores. Green Dot--one of Southern California's startup success stories--rose to prominence via its relationship with Walmart, which has been its biggest source of customers since before its IPO. Green Dot had dropped 20 percent after the news was announced by American Express and Walmart. Before its IPO, Green Dot had been venture backed by the Tech Coast Angels and Sequoia Capital, and its IPO was the most successful exit, ever, for many of the Tech Coast Angels. Elon Musk's SolarCity Files For IPO ---- It's been a big weekend for tech entrepreneur Elon Musk, after another successful launch Sunday from his commercial spaceflight firm, SpaceX--based in Hawthorne--and, it turns out, another IPO filing for Musk. SolarCity, a Bay Area provider of solar power financing, filed for an IPO Friday, saying that it is looking to raised $201.25M in an IPO on the NASDAQ Global Market as SCTY. It turns out that Musk owns 31.9 percent of SolarCity, which was founded by his cousins, Lyndon and Peter Rive. Musk is no stranger to IPOs; his electric car firm, Tesla Motors, had its IPO in 2010 and he co-founded PayPal, which had its IPO in 2002. SpaceX, the commercial rocketship firm which has made Elon Musk one of Southern California's best known entrepreneurs, has long been rumored to be considering an IPO, but it appears SolarCity might beat SpaceX to market. SolarCity has avoided the flameout of many other American solar companies by focusing on the financing--not development--of solar power installations, by providing power purchase agreements (PPAs) which help people lease back their panels and both lower their power bills and avoid the large capital costs involved with solar power installs.
