How GridTest Is Helping To Build The Next Electric Car, With Neal Roche
----
The clean technology sector is infamous for taking a big toll on
startups--requiring large investments, risky technology propositions,
steep international competition, and fickle government policies. How
do you create a business around the still-emerging market of electric
vehicles and avoid those issues? One way is developing testing tools
and infrastructure around that market, to help those manufacturers in
their research and development, which is just what Calabasas-based
GridTest Systems (www.gridtest.com) is doing. We spoke with founder
Neal Roche about his startup, which provides testing tools for the
electric vehicle (EV) market.

What are GridTest's products used for?

Neal Roche: We make test equipment for the electric vehicle market.
What is happening in the electric vehicle market, is (More...)

New World Leads Big Investment In Data Center Technology Developer
----
New World Ventures, the venture capital arm of The Pritzker Group, is
the lead investor in a big, $90M funding round for a developer of data
center technology and services. Phoenix-based IO, which develops
modular data center technology, said it raised $90M in a funding led
by New World Ventures, which is based in Chicago but has recently been
ramping up its Los Angeles investing efforts. IO said that New World
Ventures contributed $50M to the round, which was the largest single
transaction in the fund's 15-year history. IO also said its prior
investors participated in the round. New World Ventures has been among
the more active investors in town, and has been increasing its efforts
to fund the startup community in Los Angeles over the last year.

SGN Launches Effort Supporting Ocean Conservation
----
Los Angeles-based game developer SGN, the mobile and social gaming
firm headed by former MySpace founder Chris DeWolfe, has kicked off an
effort to help support ocean conservation via a relationship with
EarthEcho International, a nonprofit headed by Phillippe Cousteau. The
two said they are partnering to raise awareness and charitable
donations for ocean conservation. As part of that partnership, the two
said that SGN's Rescue Reef mobile game will include EarthEcho branded
items in the game, and also provide facts about ocean conservation. A
percentage of purchases of those items will go to support EarthEcho's
youth education efforts. Philippe Cousteau is the grandson of famed
ocean explorer Jacques Yves Cousteau. SGN has run similar promotions
in the past; the company said it recently ran one with The Humane
Society of the United States with its game Fluff Friends Rescue, and
has a number of others in the works.

Qualcomm Signs Brazilian Electronics Manufacturer
----
San Diego-based Qualcomm and Brazilian electronics manufacturer Semp
Toshiba are in a new 3G and 4G license agreement, the two said this
morning. The companies said that Qualcomm has granted Semp Toshiba a
patent license to sell 3G WCDMA, TD-SCDMA, and 4G OFDMA (LTE)
equipment in Brazil. Financial terms of the licensing deal were not
disclosed. Qualcomm said that Semp Toshiba will pay it licensing fees
as it standard worldwide rates. Semp Toshiba is an electronics
manufacturer, selling desktops, notebooks, mobile phones, and tablets.

Enervee Ranks Appliances, Electronics On Energy Use
----
How energy efficient is that new television you just bought for your
house, and how can you be sure? A new, Santa Monica-based startup,
Enervee, has recently rolled out a new tool to help people estimate
how much energy their television--and soon, other appliances--are
consuming. The startup said it is working on introducing what it calls
a miles-per-gallon (MPG) sticker for TVs, called the "Enervee Score".
The company said televisions are only the first set of scores it will
be providing, with a report on refrigerators due later this month. The
company's site currently lists energy efficiency details on everything
from laptop computers, printers, air conditions, washing machines, and
more.

uSamp Expands In Europe
----
Los Angeles-based uSamp, the provider of market research services and
software, said Tuesday that it has expanded in Europe, hiring a new
EVP to head up its operations in the region. The firm said it has
named George Llorens as Executive Vice President, Global Head of
Sales, to head up growth in Europe, where it says it had a
"double-digit" staff expansion. The company says it now has five
offices internationally. uSamp explained that it had 104 percent
revenue growth in Europe last year.

TrueCar Wins Regions Bank
----
TrueCar, the Santa Monica-based provider of auto buying and pricing
software, is powering another online vehicle purchase service with a
deal with Regions Bank, the company said Tuesday. TrueCar said it is
providing the online vehicle information service for Regions Bank,
which allows customers of that bank to research, shop for, finance,
and insure a new or used vehicle. Financial impact of the deal was not
disclosed. TrueCar's software and services allow users to shop and
specify cars for purchase, down to the accessory level, and gain
upfront pricing from local dealers for those automobiles; the firm
provides its services to a number of membership groups, including
USAA, the AAA, and Consumer Reports. The firm has been causing some
serious ripples (and widespread worries) for auto dealers, due to its
very open publishing of actual auto purchase transaction data.

LoneStar Heart Gets $20M For Heart Therapy
----
Laguna Hills-based LoneStar Heart, a firm developing cardiac
restorative therapies for patients with heart failure, has raised $20M
in a funding round, the firm revealed yesterday, from Chinese investor

towards clinical testing and regulatory clearance of its lead
product. The firm said it has now raised $35M in funding since
founding in June of 2010. Themes' Frank Yu has joined the company's
board as part of the funding. Orange County-based LoneStar is

effort on the model set by Southern California's Tech Coast Angels,
according to a report today from Phillipine publication Sun.Star Cebu.
