Size of the round was not disclosed. Burner is a mobile app which allows users to create disposable phone numbers, which they can hand out to people for one-time or temporary use. The funding came from 500 Startups, David Cohen, Ted Rheingold, Robert Goldberg, Kevin Slavin, Ric Calvillo, and others. Ad Hoc Labs is headed by Greg Cohn, said the funding will go towards buildling out new features for Burner and to help market the app, as well as to launch an Android version of the application. GraphEffect said its new platform also includes and API and connections into third party app provider, including Lettuce, Gradient X, HYFN, Kenshoo, and The Resumator. GraphEffect said that SHIFT helps develops make business software applications more collaborative, and includes such features as single sign in using OAuth and other collaborative workflow features. As part of the launch, the firm said that it has hired Adam Gerston as VP of Strategic Partnerships, and opened up a new Palo Alto office; Gerston was previously at Facebook, where he was working with that firm's Preferred Marketing Developer (PMD) program. Helix Medical Buys MedVenture Technology ---- Carpinteria-based Helix Medical, a manufacturer for the medical device and healthcare industry, has acquired MedVenture Technology Corp., a medical device design, development, and manufacturing company. Financial terms of the buy were not disclosed. MedVenture is headquartered in Louisville, Kentucky, and has offices in Indiana and Minnesota. MedVenture was owned by private equity firm Ampersand Capital Partners. Helix said the buy will enhance its ability to offer product design, development, and engineering services for medical devices. Factual Goes Real-Time On Updates ---- Factual, the Los Angeles provider of a huge dataset of location information and other data available via API, said last night that the firm has just turned on real time updates on the service. The Argentina-based software developer said it has named Philip B. Cox as President and CEO, and opened up its world headquarters in the United States. Cox has previously served at such firms as CalAmp, Signal Technology COrp. M/A/Com, Inc., and 360 Systems. HARDATA's software is used by radio stations to manage digital content distribution, and also has a number of products aimed at the television broadcasting market. DocStoc's License123.com Makes Business Licenses Easier, In LA ---- License123, the business licensing information site operated by Docstoc.com, is looking to make it easier for businesses in the City of Los Angeles to apply for the city, county, and state permitting paperwork for various kinds of businesses. According to LA Councilmember Eric Garcetti, people can now visit his website and gain access to the service, where businesses can apply for the relevant businesses licenses for free in Los Angeles. License123 is the brainchild of Docstoc's Jason Nazar, who figured out that businesses licenses and permits are one of the biggest headaches for new businesses. License123 offers its business license information for cities around the country. Garcetti said in a statement announcing the new service that Los Angeles must "must get aggressive and innovative about creating jobs", and that the service will let entrepreneurs know that "L.A. is open for business." Silicon Beach Popularity Drives Up Rent, Says Report ---- The popularity of setting up a startup on Silicon Beach is pushing up office rent on the Westside of Los Angeles, according to an article from Businessweek posted Tuesday. The article says that office space is getting more expensive in areas like Venice, due to the number of startups moving into the area, and the activity of companies like Google, accelerators like Amplify, startups like StackSocial, and others. Amazon Studios said this week that it has optioned two new comedy series, including Support, centered around a band's life on the road, and The Face and The Heel, focused on the world of wrestling. Amazon has been optioning all kinds of projects lately, as it looks to fill a pipeline of possible content productions. Amazon set up shop in Los Angeles last year as part of its content efforts. Pokki: Bring Back My Windows Start Menu ---- Planning on upgrading to Windows 8, the newest operating system from Microsoft? Confused about where the Windows Start menu went? San Diego startup Sweetlabs, the maker of the Pokki desktop applications environment for Windows, is looking to help confused Windows users by restoring the Start Menu functionality to the new Microsoft OS. SweetLabs said that its new Pokki for Windows 8 product--which is free--incorporates all of the core Start Menu functionality back into Windows 8, after Microsoft removed those features from its new OS. Pokki's software allows users to launch and run smartphone-style apps on the Windows desktop; the new "Start Menu" functionality comes via Pokki Menu, a feature of the Pokki software.
