Southern California Firms Get $694M In Q3 2012 Venture Funding
----
The latest numbers from the PricewaterhouseCoopers/National Venture
Capital Association MoneyTree report finds that companies here in
Southern California raised $695.4M in funding in Q3, up in terms of
dollars from Q3 of last year, when $670.9M was raised. In terms of
deals, the quarter was actually down from last year, with 79 deals
completed in Q3 of this year, versus 91 in Q3 of 2011. Quarter to
quarter, both dollars and deals were down, although Q2 to Q3 numbers
have consistently been lower for at least the last six years.

ACTV8 Launches Pro Football App
----
Los Angeles-based ACTV8, which develops mobile applications for the
television market, said today that it has launched a new, mobile
football app. The firm said its new "In The Huddle" app is designed to
provide a second screen experience during nationally televised, pro
football games on Sunday and Monday nights. The app allows fans to
make real time game predictions, to win points and bragging rights.
The new app runs on Apple iOS, with Android support expected in the
middle of next month. ACTV8 develops a wide range of interactive apps
which tie together the mobile experience with broadcast and cable
television. The company is run by Brian Shuster.

SmartDrive Names Marketing VP
----
San Diego-based SmartDrive Systems, the developer of technology for
tracking the driving performance in corporate fleets, said today that
it has namd Choo Kim-Isgitt as its new VP of Marketing. Kim-Isgitt
joins the firm from M86 Security, where she was responsible for
corporate marketing. She also has served at Websense and IBM.
SmartDrvie develops video-based monitoring systems used to track the
driving in public and private fleets.

Row 44 Signs Another Russian Airline
----
Westlake Village-based in-flight wireless and entertainment hardware
provider Row 44 has signed up its second Russian airline customer, the
firm said this week. Row 44 said that it has added UTair Aviation,
which it called a "leading airline" in Russia, as a customer for its
high-speed Internet access and entertainment service. Financial impact
of the win was not disclosed, and Row 44 did not say how many planes
UTair plans to install with its systems. Row 44's inflight Wi-Fi
services are powered via a satellite communications deal, which has
given Row 44 a larger footprint and ability to handle trans-oceanic
wireless, compared with some of its competitors. Row 44 said the
installations for UTair will begin in the third quarter of 2013. Row
44 is led by John LaValle.

Qualcomm Keeps The Faith With Validity Sensors Investment
----
Qualcomm Ventures, the venture capital arm of Qualcomm, is keeping the
faith in one of its portfolio companies, Validity Sensors, a developer
of fingerprint sensors for the PC, mobile, and tablet market. Qualcomm
was one of the return investors in a $20M, Series E funding round for
Validity, along with TeleSoft Partners, Crosslink Capital, Panorama
Capital, and Venture Tech Associates. Qualcomm has been an investor in
Validity since at least 2006. The new round was announced Thursday.

Avalon Ventures Backs Selectable Media
----
San Diego-based venture investor Avalon Ventures has backed a
developer of video advertising products, Selectable Media, to the tune
of $2M. Selectable Media, which is based in New York, lets users opt
into branded video advertising in exchange for free access to content
on web and mobile apps. The funding round actually closed on September
5th, according to regulatory details released last month, and
Selectable Media has been listed on Avalon's site since last month;
more details on the funding were reported today.

Cebix Gains $30.9M For Diabetes Treatments
----
La Jolla-based Cebix, a biopharmaceutcials company that is developing
treatments for complications due to diabetes, said this week that it
has raised $30.9M in a Series B investment round. The funding came
from its existing investors, which include InterWest, Sofinnova
Ventures and Thomas, McNerney & Partners. Cebix said the funding comes
after the completion of a Phase 1/2 trial of its lead drug for
treating peripheral neuropathy. The firm is now planning to launch a
Phase 2b trial in early Q2 2013.

Burner Lands Angel Round
----
Ad Hoc Labs, the developer behind the Burner mobile app, has just
scored a round of angel funding. Size of the round was not disclosed.
Burner is a mobile app which allows users to create disposable phone
numbers, which they can hand out to people for one-time or temporary
use. The funding came from 500 Startups, David Cohen, Ted Rheingold,
Robert Goldberg, Kevin Slavin, Ric Calvillo, and others. Ad Hoc Labs
is headed by Greg Cohn, said the funding will go towards buildling out
new features for Burner and to help market the app, as well as to
launch an Android version of the application. Burner said its phone
numbers are being used for such thing as handing out your number to
potential dates, to selling items on Craiglist.
