How Sendgrid Makes Sure Those App Emails Go Through, With Jim Franklin
----
If you're an application developer, sending emails through your
application can be a chore. It turns out it's not just a quick line of
code to send an email -- it's also a hassle to make sure that those
emails get delivered, that your email isn't classified as spam, and
handling all sorts of delivery issues. How do you offload all those
headaches? Sendgrid (www.sendgrid.com) has stepped into that void,
providing application programming interfaces (APIs) and all the
infrastructure required to handle that email delivery. We spoke with
Jim Franklin, the firm's CEO, to hear more about how the company went
from an accelerator startup at TechStars just a few years ago, to now
more than 100 employees spread across offices in Boulder; Colorado,
Anaheim, California; Frankfurt; London, and elsewhere, to tackle the
problems of transactional email.

What is Sendgrid?

Jim Franklin: Sendgrid is a cloud-based email service. We move
transactional mail between web applications and end users. The best
way to describe this is by example. If you think of Pinterest, one of
our customers (More...)

DogVacay Lands $6M In Series A
----
DogVacay, the online marketplace which lets pet owners connect with
others to find dog boarding, has raised $6M in a Series A round, the
firm announced this morning. The funding came from Benchmark Capital,
and comes on top of earlier, seed funding from First Round Capital,
Science Inc., and others. As part of the funding, Benchmark's Bill
Gurley joins the company's board of directors, and Bob Kagle at
Benchmark will become and advisor to the company. Los Angeles-based
DogVacay, which is headed by Aaron Hirschorn, lets users connect with
others to board their dogs, finding other owners, sitters, and others
who care for those dogs in their homes. DogVacay said it will use the
funding to build its team, user experience, and expand into other
areas and eventually, overseas. (More...)

assets and brands and develops them as individual properties, said
today that it has scored a "multi-million" dollar financing. The

announced. Consumer Brands develops domain name-focused websites
around verticals, including sites like Dementia.org, Anxiety.org,
DietDiva, and more. The firm is headed by Michael Gleason.

Epic Sciences Gets $13M For Cancer Diagnostics

technology, announced today that it has raised $13M in a Series B

caner and monitor cancer treatments. The firm said the new funds will
go towards research and development operations, as well as
commercialization of its platform. Epic Sciences technology is
licensed from The Scripps Research Institute.

Auryn Launches Photo Enhancement, Sharing App
----
Auryn, a developer of mobile applications for the iPhone and iPad,
said today that it has launched a new photo enhancement and sharing
app. The new app, which is free from the Los Angeles company, said it
allows users to turn their pictures into "works of art", using dozens
of different rendering, filtering, framing, and other effects. The
firm said users can then share those creations with friends via
Facebook, Twitter, and Flickr. Auryn develops a large number of mobile
apps, a large number of which are aimed at children.

What Does Google's New YouTube Strategy Mean For SoCal Startups?
----
t looks like Google's YouTube intends to pull at least 60 percent of
its programming deals for online content providers, a move that may
have a huge impact on Southern California's emerging video content
startups. In a report, AllThingsD said that YouTube intends to
re-invest in up to 40 percent of the original channels being funded
through its program, but the rest--who haven't met its expectations on
engageent and viewing time--will most likely not get new deals and
will have to fend for themselves. (More...)

Insights and Opinions: A Primer On Anti-Dilution
----
For our Insights and Opinions section on a quiet holiday Monday, we're
featuring some background on the concepts behind anti-dilution and how
it's used by venture capital firms in fundings. This piece comes from
Louis Wharton, Partner with Stubbs Alderton & Markiles, LLP.

Prudent investors often request some protection against the risks
associated with a decrease in the value of a company in which they
have invested (referred to herein as the issuer). This protection is
typically effected (More...)

j2 Global Buys Ziff Davis
----

firm Ziff Davis. j2 Global said it paid $167M for j2, out of cash on
hand, for Ziff Davis, which owns PCMag.com, ComputerShopper,
ExtremeTech, Toolbox.com and Geek.com, among other properties. j2
Global, which is run by Hemi Zucker, said the buy is the 40th
acquisition of the company, and that it plans to expand Ziff Davis
through a combination of internal growth and acquisitions. j2 Global
said the buy will contribute approximately $60M to its 2013 revenues.

communications, online backup, email marketing, Internet fax, and
other businesses.

World of Warcraft Player Wins (Real) Political Office
----
It looks like being a huge, massively multiple online game player
isn't such a political liability. Last week, an avid player of World
of Warcraft, the MMORPG developed by Irvine's Blizzard Entertainment,
won a seat as a state senator in Maine. Colleen Lachowicz, a Democrat
in Maine, had been the target of a huge campaign to try to discredit
her efforts to be voted into office due to her playing World of
Warcraft. According to reports, Lachowicz plays a "level-85 orc" in
the game. It's unclear how many people in politics are World of
Warcraft users (the company said yesterday it has over 10 million
players in the game).
