Ten Of The Top Tech Companies For Employees In LA
----
Who are the top tech companies to work for in Los Angeles? Despite a
huge number of companies, we found there are a number which popped up
consistently in an informal (and highly non-scientific poll) of a
number of readers, executive recruiters, and others in the Los Angeles
area, who cited growth, brand, profitability, and other factors in
their suggestions to us of the top companies. (Readers in San Diego,
Orange County, Ventura County, and elsewhere, please comment or send
us your comments!). Although it's impossible to include all the
companies suggested to us (there were dozens and dozens), here's some
of the ones that stood out:

1. Demand Media

----
Los Angeles-based The Chernin Group, the media holding company and
investor led by Peter Chernin, said Thursday afternoon that it has
received a "significant" equity investment from Qatar Holding LLC.
Size of that investment was not disclosed. The Chernin Group said the
new investment, along with an existing investment from Providence
Equity Partners and others, will be used to expand and diversify its
media and entertainment operations. The Cherin Group owns stakes in
such companies as Pandora, Fullscreen, Tumblr, Flipboard and Scopely.
TCG said it was advised by Allen & Co. LLC and Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher
LLP in the deal; Qatar Holding was represented by White & Case LLP.
AllThingsD pinned the size of the round at $100M.

PURE Bioscience Names CFO
----
San Diego-based PURE Bioscience, the developer of antimicrobial
agents, said Thursday that it has named Peter C. Wulff as its Chief
Financial Officer. Wulff was previously at Alphatec Holdings, and also
has served at such firms as Artes Medical, CryoCor, and Natural
Alternatives International. PURE Bioscience said Wulff has 25 years of
experience in the industry.

Row 44 Acquired In $430M Deal
----
Los Angeles-based Row 44, the developer of in-flight wireless access
and entertainment systems, has been acquired in a deal worth
approximately $430M, according to Global Eagle Acquisition Corp.,.
Global Eagle said that it will acquired Row 44, along with Advanced
Inflight Alliance AG, a German developer of entertainment and
connectivity products for the airline industry. The exact amount paid
for Row 44 was not announced, however, the backer of Advanced Inflight
Alliance AG is PAR Investment Partners, L.P., which is also the major
investor in Row 44. Row 44 supplies satellite-based inflight broadband
equipment. Row 44 has raised around $103M in funding from such
investors as PAR Capital Management, as well as Advanced Inflight
Alliance AG, the firm it is being combined with.

Latest LA Hackathon Centers Around Pets
----
In the last year, Los Angeles has become a favorite location for
conducting "hackathons"--those challenges which encourage developers
to create new applications and products around different themes. The
latest? A hackathon focused on pets. The Petcentric Hackathon, which
is being held on the Amplify campus in Venice, said Thursday that it
will offer up a top prize of $3,000 to the top team which comes up
with the top ideas and products that help people engage with their
pets. In a unique first, the hackathon has invited a new segment of
the tech population: those pets themselves, saying that pets are
welcome to the event, being held Saturday, November 17th. The last few
months have seen a Movie Hackathon (held at ZEFR); a car buying
hackathon (at Edmunds.com); a no-texting-while-driving hackathon (at
Coloft); and a Silicon Beach hackathon (at the last Silicon Beach
fest).

Call Of Duty: Black Ops II Includes Live YouTube Streaming
----
Players of the upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops II title being
released next week by Activision Blizzard will be able to stream their
games directly to YouTube, according to Activision. Activision
Publishing said Thursday that Xbox 360 and PlayStatoin 3 game players
will be able to stream their live gameplay on YouTube, in parallel
with webcam and audio commentary from users. The new feature will
require both a verified YouTube account and a Call of Duty Elite
registration. Call of Duty: Black Ops II is launching on November
13th.

Silicon Valley VC's New LPs: Hollywood?
----
Looking for some funding for your new Menlo Park venture capital fund?
Apparently, according to Variety, that source is increasingly
Hollywood, and its stars and executives. In an article talking about
where Hollywood's elite is putting its money, variety said that
business managers who handle the financial affairs of Hollywood's
stars and execs are eagerly looking to place a "significant portion"
of their portfolios in the tech sector, often through buying into
venture capital funds on Sand Hill road. The article did not quantify
how much Hollywood money is going to technology venture capital and
private equity.

VIRURL Launches New Ad Widget
----
Santa Monica-based VIRURL, which is headed by Francisco Diaz-Mitoma,
said today that it has launched a new widget aimed at web publishers.
The firm said its new "Slideout" widget helps provide unobtrusive
advertising to help publishers monetize site visitors. VIRURL said its
widget lets users click on a "recommended content" link which links
users to extra, sponsored content that might be relevant to the
content on a page. VIRURL says it is looking to "kill of the banner
ad", which the company says is an ineffective way to monetize the web.
The firm has funding Tice Capital, the Los Angeles Syndicate of
Technology, and angels. Diaz-Mitoma is the former founder of Titan
Gaming.

Munchery Takes On Pop-Up Pantry, Plans LA Expansion
