Musk said over the past few days that he'd like to transport 80,000 people a year to the Red Planet. Knopov previously was at Nitto Denk Technical Corporation. He also served at Diversified Bio-Medics, EnGene, Marina Biotech, and Inex Pharmaceuticals. CallFire Powers Obama Nevada Election Monitoring ---- Santa Monica-based CallFire reports today that its services were used in the recent election day, by Obama for America In Nevada. CallFire said its cloud telephony services were used to develop interactive voice response applications to let volunteers at polls provide regular updates on election day activities. The application is just one of the many election-related applications CallFire has powered over the last few months. CallFire provides voice APIs, text messaging, and other cloud telephony features to developers and users. JibJab Debuts Gangnam Style Christmas Card ---- JibJab, the online humor and greeting card service run by Evan and Gregg Spiridellis, has scored a major coup, releasing a new card out of its "Starring You" line of personalized video greeting cards based on Gangnam Style. The new Gangnam Style Video Card features a user's head inserted directly into the original, viral Gangnam Style video, which can be sent to your friends and family (for free, in the case of this video). JibJab's "Starring You" cards were just tapped earlier this month by Amazon.com for video-based gift cards. JibJab hasn't detailed any of the business terms of efforts behind the new card. Gangnam Style is the Korean pop video from artist PSY, which has become a viral phenomenon both on and off the Internet. http://www.jibjab.com/holidays/christmas/gangnam_style AnyMeeting Hits 250,000 Users, Adds Funding ---- Web conferencing serivce AnyMeeting said today that it has reached over 250,000 registered users for its service, which is aimed at small businesses, and also added additional funding. The firm, which is based in Huntington Beach, said that it has added addtional funding from the Sand Hill Angels and Keiretsu Forum, in addition to support from current Southern California investors. Size of that new funding round was not announced by the company. AnyMeeting offers up an online, web meeting service, available both as a free, ad-supported version as well as other, premium options. Financial terms of the settlement were not disclosed. According to Nomadix, the settlement includes a license to HP for key portions of its patent portfolio. Nomadix, which develops Internet gateway products, is now owned by DOCOMO interTouch. Nomadix had filed its original patent suit against HP in 2009, and had also named Wayport, Inc., iBAHN Corporation, Guest-Tek Interactive Entertainment Ltd., Guest-Tek Interactive Entertainment, Inc., LodgeNet Interactive Corporation, LodgeNet StayOnline, Inc., On Command Corporation, Aruba Networks, Inc., Superclick, Inc. and Superclick Networks, Inc. in that lawsuit. Elon Musk's SolarCity Sets IPO Pricing Range ---- Southern California entrepreneur Elon Musk has huge success this year, in (literally) getting commercial spaceflight firm SpaceX--based in Hawthorne--off the ground and into space, with a hugely successful set of flights to the International Space Station (ISS). Financial terms of the buy were not announced. The acquisition came via Gores' Small Capitalization Partners fund. Gores said that DMN provides engineering and project management services to the mobile communications industry in the UK. Local Corporation Gets Patent ---- Irvine-based Local Corporation, the operator of online local advertising websites, said today that it has been granted a patent from the U.S. Patent and Trademark office. The firm said the new patent, number 8,306,208, covers pay-per-call technology. The firm said its patent covers Enahnced Directory Assistance inquiries from mobile devices. According to the USPTO, the patent was granted on November 6th, and names William A. Montemer as inventor; the patent was originally filed way back in August of 2009, and was a continuation of a patent application originally filed in May of 2003. Local Corporation was represented by Nixon Peabody LLP in the filing. Quest Software Updates Email Analytics Software ---- Aliso Viejo-based Quest Software, the enterprise software developer which is now owned by Dell, said it has upgraded its email analytics software, MessageStats. The firm said the upgraded software includes such features as an HTML5 front end, ability to detect, analyze, and investigate inappropriate use of corporate email, and more. Quest was acquired by Dell in a $2.4 billion acquisition in September. ZEFR Hits 1 Billion Monthly Views ---- Venice-based ZEFR, the online content provider headed by Zach James and Richard Raddon, has reached 1 billion monthly views of its content, the firm revealed Monday, as part of an invite to supporters to celebrate the milestone. The company--formerly known as MovieClips--offers up content from partners such as Universal, Warner Bros., Paramount, MGM, Miramax, Columbia, and others, for online distribution. The company also is providing technology to distribute content in the areas of sports, music, and television. ZEFR's content is primarily distributed through YouTube. The company is venture backed by U.S. Venture Partners,MK Capital, Shasta Ventures, SoftTech VC, First Round Capital, Richmond Park Partners, among others. Eucalyptus Debuts New GUI, Features ---- Santa Barbara-based Eucalytus, the cloud management software developer headed by Marten Mickos, released a new version of its software Monday, saying that it has added a number of new features including a new graphical user interface. Eucalpytus said its new 3.2 software adds simplified cloud administration, reporting, better features for managing storage, and more. Among the most prominent updates was the addition of software which allows raw block devices and "just a bunch of disk" (JBOD) storage to support AWS Elastic BLock Store (EBS) APIs and features, as well as expanded storage-area-network support for EMC VNX Series SANs. Tealium Taps Startup Vet Lunsford As New CEO ---- San Diego-based software developer Tealium, which develops software used to manage Internet "tags" for web developers, said today that it has named Jeff Lunsford as its new CEO. Lunsford, who was already on the company's board, was previously President, CEO, and Chairman of Limelight Networks. He also served as CEO of WebSideStory, in addition to other experience. The addition brings some significant experience to Tealium's executive team; Lunsford took Limelight Networks public in an IPO, and also was CEO of WebSideStory at its IPO in 2004. Tealium's software is used by enterprises to manage digital marketing tags on web pages; the firm's founders were all previously at WebSideStory, and the company recently raised funding from Battery Ventures. YouMail Swizzles Android App ---- Irvine-based YouMail, the developer of enhanced voicemail applications and services, has updated its Android application, adding new features such as in-app messaging, a new UI, and more. The application developer--which is headed by Alex Quilici--offers up an enhanced voicemail service which replaces a user's existing voicemail, providing caller ID, call blocking, voice transcription, voicemail-to-email, and other features. Among the most notable updates is the in-app messaging, which allows users of the app to trade voicemails with other Youmail users; that feature competes with other, mobile phone "walkie-talkie" apps like Voxer and HeyTell. The upgraded app is now available on the Google Play store. Young, male, viewers, according to a report from the New York Times. ReachLocal Expands In Brazil ---- Woodland Hills-based ReachLocal is continuing its international expansion, saying today that it has opened up its first, South American office, in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The firm said the new office expands the company into its eleventh country. ReachLocal provides help to local and small businesses to advertise their companies online. The firm said it targeted Brazil as its first country in South America, due to the rapid growth rate in that country; the firm said online advertising spend in Brazil was $804M in 2011. ReachLocal has tapped Jose Coscelli as CEO of its Brazilian operations; Coscelli was previously COO of cloud computing firm Globalweb Brazil. Greycroft Partners Raises $175M For Third Venture Fund ---- One of the more active venture capital firms in Los Angeles, Greycroft Partners, said today that it has closed a $175M, third fund, Greycroft III. Black Friday Spending Up In 2012, Hits $1.042 Billion ---- According to numbers released over the weekend by Internet traffic and e-commerce measurement service comScore, online Black Friday sales surged 26 percent from last year, and totaled $1.042 billion. The company said that U.S. retail, e-commerce spending on Friday was the heaviest, online spending day to date in 2012. The firm tallied sales of $633M on Thanksgiving. The big Black Friday sales bring total online sales to $13.7 billion for the holiday season so far. Online retailers traditionally have seen their biggest sales online today, Cyber Monday, as people head back to work and take advantage of online sales; comScore said it expects to see sales approaching $1.5 billion or higher today due to all that shopping. BeachMint Plans Live Shopping Event ---- BeachMint, the e-commerce firm led by Josh Berman, said this morning that it is holding a live shopping and broadcast event today for Cyber Monday. The Santa Monica company--which runs a large portfolio of celebrity-themed, social shopping sites--said it is partnering with Ustream, Who What Wear, and StyleList for the event. The online broadcast will feature ShoeMint's Rachel Bilson, Nicole Chavez, intiMINT's Brooke Burke-Charvet, as well as other celebrities. Ceres, Syngenta In Market Development Deal ---- Thousand Oaks-based Ceres, the developer of seeds for the energy and biofuels industry, said today that its Brazilian subsidiary, Ceres Sementes do Brasil Ltda., is in a deal with Syngenta to develop sweet sorghum-based products to power Brazil's ethanol mills. The two said they will collaborate on small-scale trials and larger demonstration field evaluations of its hybrid seeds. Financial details of the deal were not announced. The two said that Brazil has more than 400 ethanol mills who potentially would use crops based on its seeds. Volcano Corporation Buys Sync-Rx ---- San Diego-based Volcano Corporation, a developer of diagnostic tools for treating coronary and peripheral vascular disease, said Friday that it has acquired Sync-Rx Ltd., an Israeli software firm developing image processing products.Financial terms of the buy were not disclosed.
