Geni Acquisition News Takes Down Service For Hours
----
Oops. That big acquisition of Los Angeles family tree site Geni had an
unwanted side effect: it took down the site for nearly five hours,
Geni reports. Geni said it suffered unexpected downtime, starting at 7
a.m. Thursday morning, running until 10:40 a.m., on the surge of
traffic received by the company after it was announced that it is
being acquired by genealogy service MyHeritage. Geni explained that
the downtime did not result in any lost data, and attributed the
unwanted downtime as a result of a "great increase in traffic" from
people eager to check out the service after the announcement.

regulatory filing from the firm this week. The firm invests in
mid-market, profitable companies. Clearlight previously had $600M in
capital under management, not including the newest fund. Clearlight

ZEFR Taps Levinsohn For Board
----
Venice, California-based ZEFR, the online content distribution startup
founded by Zach James and Richard Raddon, has some new experience in
its corner: Ross Levinsohn, the former interim CEO of Yahoo. Levinsohn
apparently has joined ZEFR's board, as the firm reshapes its business
to go beyond its roots as MovieClips.com, and adding content in the
areas of sports, television, and music. ZEFR has been fairly quiet
about what its future looks like beyond MovieClips.com, only saying
that it's on the brink of hitting 1 billion monthly video views
recently. The role is not all that surprising for Levinsohn,
who--before he was tapped by Yahoo to head up its Americas Region in
2010--was a very active investor and adviser to Southern California
media and technology startups.

Codewars Launches To Challenge, Educate Developers
----
Are you a code warrior? Do you know how to solve any software
challenge thrown at you? A newly launch, Los Angeles startup,
CodeWars, is looking to create a place where developers can compete,
sharpen their skills, and gain the respect of their peers. The
startup--founded by Nathan Doctor and Jake Hoffner--says it is
building a society where highly talented developers can compete,
collaborate, and unite on technical challenges. The recently launched
site lets users join but only after passing a series of coding
"initiation" tests, by providing their coding abilities. Co-founder
Nathan Doctor said the idea behind the site is to create a place for
hackers to meet and interact with other talent, at no charge.
