That big acquisition of Los Angeles family tree site Geni had an unwanted side effect: it took down the site for nearly five hours, Geni reports. Geni said it suffered unexpected downtime, starting at 7 a.m. Thursday morning, running until 10:40 a.m., on the surge of traffic received by the company after it was announced that it is being acquired by genealogy service MyHeritage. Geni explained that the downtime did not result in any lost data, and attributed the unwanted downtime as a result of a "great increase in traffic" from people eager to check out the service after the announcement. SGN In Real Money Betting Deal With Betable ---- SGN, the developer of social and mobile games, said today that it is adding real money gambling to its games, via a partnership with legal gambling API provider Betable. SGN said a selection of its games will be powered by Betable in certain overseas markets. Financial details of the deal were not disclosed. SGN said it will begin activating gambling in a selection of its mobile titles in overseas markets, beginning in the first half of 2013. SGN did not say which games it intends to add gambling to first. SGN is led by Chris DeWolfe, one of the co-founders of MySpace. The firm is venture backed by Austin Ventures. SocialVibe Partners With Secure Web Browsing Firm ---- Los Angeles-based online advertising firm SocialVibe said Thursday that it has partnered with secure web browsing app provider AnchorFree. SocialVibe said AnchorFree becomes a premium partner of the firm. Details of the partnership and link were not announced. AnchorFree offers up a safe browsing application for the PC, Mac, iPhone, and Android. Clearlight Partners Raises $300M Private Equity Fund ---- Newport Beach-based private equity investor Clearlight Partners has raised $300M in a new fund, Clearlight Partners III, according to a regulatory filing from the firm this week. The firm invests in mid-market, profitable companies. Clearlight previously had $600M in capital under management, not including the newest fund. Clearlight has previously invested in such companies as FutureLogic, a Glendale developer of thermal printers, and Switchcraft Holdings, a electronic connector and cable assembly company, but technology companies have not been a focus for the company's most recent investments. ArmaGen Technologies Gets $17M For Protein Therapeutics ---- Santa Monica-based biopharmaceuticals startup ArmaGen Technologies announced Thursday afternoon tha tit has raised $17M in a Series A financing round. The firm said it is developing brain-penetrating recombinant protein therapeutics, which allows biopharmaceuticals to reach the central nervous system more effectively. The funding was led by Boehringer Ingelheim Venture Fund, and also included Shire plc, Takeda Ventures, Inc., and Mitsui & Co. Global Investment. ArmaGen's products are aimed at getting past the blood-brain barrier, a feature of the human body which makes it difficult for bacteria and viruses to invade the brain--but also, makes it very difficult to deliver pharmaceuticals to the central nervous system. http://www.socaltech.com/intelligence/index.php?action=showdeal&id=46984 ZEFR Taps Levinsohn For Board ---- Venice, California-based ZEFR, the online content distribution startup founded by Zach James and Richard Raddon, has some new experience in its corner: Ross Levinsohn, the former interim CEO of Yahoo. Levinsohn apparently has joined ZEFR's board, as the firm reshapes its business to go beyond its roots as MovieClips.com, and adding content in the areas of sports, television, and music. ZEFR has been fairly quiet about what its future looks like beyond MovieClips.com, only saying that it's on the brink of hitting 1 billion monthly video views recently. The role is not all that surprising for Levinsohn, who--before he was tapped by Yahoo to head up its Americas Region in 2010--was a very active investor and adviser to Southern California media and technology startups. Codewars Launches To Challenge, Educate Developers ---- Are you a code warrior? Do you know how to solve any software challenge thrown at you? A newly launch, Los Angeles startup, CodeWars, is looking to create a place where developers can compete, sharpen their skills, and gain the respect of their peers. The startup--founded by Nathan Doctor and Jake Hoffner--says it is building a society where highly talented developers can compete, collaborate, and unite on technical challenges. The recently launched site lets users join but only after passing a series of coding "initiation" tests, by providing their coding abilities. Co-founder Nathan Doctor said the idea behind the site is to create a place for hackers to meet and interact with other talent, at no charge. TranscribeMe Gets Funding From TCA, Maverick, Keiretsu ---- Three active angel investment groups--The Tech Coast Angels, the largest and most active angel investment group in Southern California; Maverick Angels, and Keiretsu Forum, have backed a developer of transcription services, TranscribeMe. TranscribeMe revealed today that it hasraised $900,000 in a funding round, which closed last week, which was led by the Keiretsu Forum, and which also included the Ice Angels, Maverick Angels, Sand Hill Angels, Sierra Angels, TEC Ventures, and Tech Coast Angels. The investment is an unusual one for the Southern California angel groups, as in TranscribeMe was started in New Zealand, and has its U.S. operations in Emeryville. Financial details of that strategic investment were not disclosed. Macheen is a startup developing service which connect smart devices, including PCs, to Internet services; the firm's services are already being used by such companies as Dell and Lenovo, as an alternative to expensive, mobile broadband plans. The funding was led by Orbimed, and also included Versant Ventures, Advent Life Sciences, and the firm's existing investors. CardiAQ said the funding will go towards validating its technology and towards feasibility and CE mark clinical trials.
