Diamandis is Chairman and CEO of the X PRIZE Foundation, and author of the recent book Abundance – The Future Is Better Than You Think. Tribogenics is led by Dale Fox. The addition of Diamandis is a notable addition for the firm, which is backed by the Founders Fund and Flywheel Ventures. Tribogenics technology was originally developed under a DARPA-funded project at UCLA. Avelas Biosciences Gains $7.65M For Tumor Visualization ---- San Diego-based Avelas Biosciences has raised $7.65M in a Series A funding round, which it says will go towards clinical studies for its technology for real-time tumor visualization. The funding came from Avalon Ventures. Avelas is developing technology for visualizing cancerous lymph nodes in breast cancer patients. The firm's technology is based on technology developed by Nobel Prize winner Roger Tsien, Ph.D. The firm's CEO is currently Jay Lichter, who is also a Managing Director at Avalon Ventures. http://www.socaltech.com/intelligence/index.php?action=showdeal&id=47060 Mandalay Digital Buys Assets From Skyrockit ---- Los Angeles-based Mandalay Digital Group, a provider of mobile data services, said today that it has acquired the music label assets of Skyrockit, a venture-backed mobile entertainment studio providing content to AT&T Mobility, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon Wireless. Financial details of the buy were not disclosed. Skyrockit was venture backed by Intel Capital, Asuka DBJ Partners, and others. Mandalay Digital--which trades OTC--said that as part of the deal, it becomes a portfolio company of Intel Capital, and that Intel Capital will become a shareholder of Mandalay Digital. Biomatrica Raises $5M ---- San Diego-based Biomatrica, a developer of technology for stabilizing DNA, RNA, and protein samples, has raised $5M in a funding round, the firm said today. Source of the new funding was not announced. Biomatrica develops ambient temperature biostability technology used for customers in the molecular diagnostics, forensics, biomedical research and other areas. Biomatrica is headed by Judy Muller-Cohn. The firm said the funding will go towards research, increasing its manufacturing capabilities, and for company infrastructure. http://www.socaltech.com/intelligence/index.php?action=showdeal&id=47059 Emulex Buys Endace ---- Costa Mesa-based networking equipment provider Emulex said Wednesday that it is acquiring Endace Limited, a provider of network performance management and monitoring appliances. The deal is worth approximately $130M. Endace--which trades on the London AIM--equipment which can record and monitor network traffic at 10Gb speeds and above. The firm has its R&D operations in New Zealand, with marketing headquarters in Sunnyvale. Local Corporation Debuts Lead Gen Effort ---- Irvine-based Local Corporation has launched a new, local lead generation site today, called Insurancelow.net, which it says is the first in a series of lead generation websites being launched by the company. The new site offers a car insurance guide and details on choosing car insurance carriers. Local Corporation said it expects the lead generation sites to offer educational articles and opportunity to receive quotes from industry professionals. The firm said it believes the launch of the lead gen sites would help it monetize the 30M consumers it reaches each month. ValueClick Shuffles CEO ---- Online advertising firm ValueClick said late Wednesday that it has named John Giuliani as its new President and CEO, replacing former CEO James R. Zarley. Zarley becomes Executive Chairman of ValueClick's board of directors. No reason for the change was given by the company, and ValueClick said there would be no change to either Mr. Giuliani's or Mr. Zarley's compensation as part of the move. Zarley served as CEO of valueClick from 1999 to May of 2007, chairman between May of 2007 to April 2010, and then back to CEO and President since April of 2010. Giuliani has been ValueClick's COO since April, and prior to that was at Dotomi. YouMail Increases Focus On Revenues With New Changes ---- What's the hardest part of running a freemium business? When you've got to pull back your free features, in order to make sure those free accounts don't overwhelm your resources. That's the lesson being learned by YouMail this week, as the firm announced that it would be changing some of its free services. YouMail, which offers up both free and paid, enhanced voicemail services, said it is no longer supporting SMS alerts in its free service, adding more advertising, and making other changes to better cover the cost of its free accounts. (More...) http://bit.ly/11GNOF3 TechForward Wins Lawsuit Against Best Buy ---- Los Angeles-based TechForward, the provider of guaranteed buyback plans for electronics which was founded by Jade Van Doren and Marc Lebovitz, has just won a $27M lawsuit it filed against Best Buy. TechForward sued Best Buy in February of 2011, over Best Buy's creation of a near clone of TechForward's business. TechForward was venture backed by New Enterprise Associates and First Round Capital, and had initially launched its services in 2007. TechForward's buyback program had allowed consumers to lock in a trade-in price for their electronics--ahead of time--guaranteeing a specific buyback price in the future. Unfortunately, the lawsuit win comes too late for TechForward itself, which recently sold its assets to SquareTrade. DocStoc's ExpertCircle Provides Business Advice, By Phone ---- Are you a small business owner, wishing you had a person on call who you could call to ask questions about marketing, legal human resources, accounting, or other topics? A new service called ExpertCircle, run by Santa Monica's DocStoc, has just launched into beta, allowing business owners to call and get expert advice on all of their business questions. According to the service, it will connect small business owners with professional experts over the phone for answers to all of their business questions, using a team of pre-vetted experts. ExpertCircle said it is currently offering its services for free during its beta, which runs until December 21st. http://www.expertcircle.net/ CLU Boots Up New Startup Center ---- In an effort to bolster startups and entrepreneurs in the San Fernando, East Ventura and Santa Clarita Valleys, a group has just started a new Center for Entrepreneurship and Growth, which will provide training, coaching, consulting, and other resources for local entrepreneurs. The new effort--which is being backed The Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at College of the Canyons, California Lutheran University (CLU), Homeier & Law, P.C., and the Maverick Angels--said it will choose up to 20 applicants to participate in its first program, which will begin in early January, and run for six weeks. The cente ris just one of the latest resources to appear in the region aimed at helping entrepreneurs; the center joins numerous incubators, accelerators, coworking spaces, and many others all focused on helping startups in the initial phase of their business. SpaceX Wins Two Air Force Missions ---- Hawthorne-based SpaceX has scored a new win today, this time, with the United States Air Force. According to SpaceX, it has been awarded two, Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicle (EELV)-class missions by the USAF, which will launch on the SpaceX Falcon in 2014 and 2015. The first mission is for the Falcon 9, and the second on the Falcon Heavy, the SpaceX rocket which is expected to be the most powerful in the world since the Saturn V. The Air Force missions are worth up to $900M, according to information released this week by the Pentagon. The missions also open up a new market for SpaceX: military launch missions. SoCal's Online Video Companies Weigh In On Gangnam Style Earnings ---- How much is Korean pop star Psy making with his viral "Gangnam Style" video on YouTube? Based on recent figures from a number of Southern California's online video companies, anything from $870,000 to $1.7M. Two recent reports--one in New York Magazine, using figures from Mahalo's Jason Calanis--and another from the AP, quoting the folks at TubeMogul, have tried to decode the economics behind the viral music video from Psy. Both reports are unusual, in sourcing payout rates on YouTube channels, which have been notoriously hard to get on record from any YouTube channel partner. Mahalo is a YouTube partner, and TubeMogul provides an online video ad purchasing platform. http://bit.ly/VmCCH4 LA's Ninjathat Exits Philly's Dreamit Ventures ---- One of the most recently graduates of the DreamIt Ventures accelerator in Philadelphia--which is holding its Demo Day today--is none other than Los Angeles company NinjaThat.
