As an executive at the National Basketball Association (NBA), Adam Kanner saw those issues--plus the industry's own desire to sell its unsold inventory--so he created ScoreBig (www.scorebig.com), an online marketplace aimed at connecting consumers with awesome deals on below-face value, live entertainment tickets. Kanner tells us how his startup is trying to both help consumers get a straight deal on the live event tickets they want, and at the same time help sell all those unsold tickets for the industry. The first problem is that the live entertainment industry has (more...) http://bit.ly/QSn5Cf --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Amgen Buys deCODE Genetics ---- Thousand Oaks-based biotech Amgen is acquiring Iceland-based deCODE Genetics, in a deal worth $415M in cash, the two companies announced this morning. deCODE Genetics is a provider of human genetic research which was founded in 1996. deCODE said its genetic research will help Amgen translate its discoveries into meaningful therapies for patients. deCODE Genetics has been using studies of the Icelandic population to help uncover the specific genes and genetic risk factors in diseases. Cohu Acquires Ismeca Semiconductor ---- Poway-based Cohu, the developer of test handling, burn-in, and thermal subsystems for the semiconductor testing industry, said over the weekend that it is buying Ismeca Semiconductor Holdings SA. Cohu is buying Ismeca from Schweiter Technologies AG, in a deal worth $54.5M in cash. Ismeca is based in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, and manufactures test handling and back-end finishing equipment for the IC, LED, and discrete component business. Cohu said Ismeca had sales of $84M for the twelve months ended June 2012. Verdezyne Wins Customer ---- Carlsbad-based Verdezyne, the developer of renewable chemical technology which is backed by BP Alternative Energy Ventures, DSM Venturing B.V., OVP Venture Partners and Monitor Ventures, has just signed a company in the polymer fiber business. According to Verdezyne, it is in a strategic relationship with Universal Fiber Systems, LLC, a provider of carpet and apparel yarns used in commercial carpets and apparel fabrics. Verdezyne said it will supply its bio-based products to Universal Fiber Systems. Financial details of the deal were not announced. Fisker Automotive Hires Investment Banker, Seeks Buyer ---- Anaheim-based electric auto firm Fisker Automotive has hired investment banker Evercore Partners, and is now seeking possible buyers or investors--but also has reviewed the option of bankruptcy protection--according to a report from the Wall Street Journal. The WSJ says that Fisker is looking for investors in China and parts of Europe, but also has reviewed the possibility of a Chapter 11 filing. The move apparently comes as a result of the company halting production of its cars in July. Fisker has also been affected by the bankruptcy of battery supplier A123, which is in the process of being sold, and apparently is not currently shipping batteries. If A123 does not restart production, Fisker's automotibles apparently will disappear from dealer lots by spring. Last week, news of Fisker's effort to find a "strategic partner" was detailed in automotive publication. Lynda.com Gets Award For Job Creation ---- Lynda.com, the site which helps people learn software and other skills from online videos, has been recognized for its job creation, the firm said Friday, ranking number 1 in job creation in education by Inc. magazine. The company said it filled nearly 200 jobs from 2008 to 2011, tops in the Education industry. Lynda.com's online site offers up instructional courses on everything from software like Photoshop to Wordpress, and Excel to AutoCAD. Lynda.com said the award will appears in Inc's December/January issue. Lynda.com now has operations in Carpinteria and Calabasas, and according to the firm's web site has over 400 employees in total. (More...) http://bit.ly/QNG8h3 New Report Details Technology Job Concentration In Region ---- A new report issued Friday, detailing technology jobs employment concentration in the United States, shines some light on where the highest concentrations of tech jobs are in the region. According to the report, issued by the Bay Area Council Economic Institute, three areas in Southern California ranked among the top 25 metro areas for high-tech employment concentration. The highest ranked was San Diego-Carlsbad-San Marcos, with 11.1 percent of private jobs in the technology sector, ranked at number 13 nationwide; Santa Barbara-Santa Maria-Goleta had 8.9 percent of jobs in technology, ranked at 20. Finally, Santa Ana-Anaheim-Irvine was ranked number 25, just making the list, with 8.2 percent of jobs in technology.
