LA Group Launches Effort To Promote Technology Corridor In Los Angeles
----
What's the best way to encourage development of the technology
industry in Los Angeles? A new group, headed by Major Villaraigosa and
including a notable list of local entrepreneurs, investors, and others
in the technology industry, announced Wednesday that it has presented
the idea for a "(t)expo Line" Technology Corridor, centered around the
new Expo Line light rail, which currently runs from Downtown to Culver
City, and eventually will extend all the way to Santa Monica.

Factual's Real-Time Places Data Expands Internationally

Factual, the provider of a giant, geolocated database of businesses
and other points of interest, said Wednesday that it has extended the
real-time updates to its Places data stack to another 49 countries.

Websense Ties With SIEM Software Provider
----
San Diego-based security software developer Websense announced today
that it has partnered with SIEM tool provider Quadrant Information
Security, where Quadrant will use its ThreatSeeker Network as part of
its event analysis and reporting tools. The WebSense ThreatSeeker
Network is a collection of data on more than 900 million endpoints,
used to analyze potential security threats and network activity.
Quadrant's SIEM tool, Sagan, is used to identify potential malicious
behavior in corporate networks. Financial details of the partnership
were not announced.

Mindspeed Details Multiple Small Cell Wins
----
Newport Beach-based semiconductor maker Mindspeed Technologies
reported multiple wins for its chips in small cell base station
designs today. Mindspeed said that it has teamed with Aricent and
Contela to create an integrate, Voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) solution for
small cell base stations, integrating Mindspeed's Transcede 3000
system-on-a-chip with Contel's LTE small cell cell product.
Separately, Mindspeed said it is also working with Radisys and SK
Telesys to create a carrier-class, Voice-over-LTE solutions for small
cell base stations. Both of the two designs use Mindspeed's
systems-on-a-chip (SoC) to power their VoLTE functionality.

BeyondTrust Buys Blackbird Group
----
Carlsbad-based security software developer BeyondTrust said Wednesday
that it has acquired Blackbird Group, a developer of Windows system
management products. Financial details of the acquisition were not
announced. BeyondTrust said the acquisition will help it add to its
product portfolio, specifically around Active Directory. Blackbird's
products will help BeyondTrust increase real-time auditing
capabilities for Active Directory, Microsoft's unified identity
software.

Koupon Kitty Launches Coupon Code Software
----
A new, online coupon software "bookmarklet" called Koupon
Kitty--backed by Juvo Capital, the investment firm of Talmadge O'Neill
and Harry Tsao--said it launched Wednesday, to help consumers find the
best coupon codes for various e-commerce sites. The service said it
was created by Juvo Capital to simplify and streamline getting online
savings. The software bookmarklet works within a web browser, and lets
users click on a button to get all of the available coupons for a
specific website before they start shopping. The bookmarklet pulls up
various coupon codes, automatically inserting them into your checkout
cart for savings. The coupon bookmarklet site is the second,
browser-based coupon startup to launch in Southern California in the
last couple of weeks; a similar, Google Chrome extension called
Honey--from a startup in neighboring Pasadena--just launched on
Monday. Juvo Capital says it has invested in such firms as BeachMint,
Chegg, eHarmony, eSalon, Gogobot and LoveIt, with exits in such
companies as Facebook, LinkedIn and Tesla Motors.

Boingo Expands Deal With NTT DOCOMO
----
Los Angeles-based Boingo Wireless, the Wi-Fi network operator, said
Wednesday that it has expanded a deal it has with Japanese carrier NTT
DOCOMO, and will provide Wi-Fi roaming and data offload services for
NTT DOCOMO. Financial details of the agreement were not disclosed. As
part of that deal, NTT DOCOMO's customers will gain access to Boingo's
network of 600,000 hotspots. The two said they've also inked a
separate agreement where Boingo customers and partners can access NTT
DOCOMO's 55,000 hotspots in Japan. NTT DOCOMO is the second largest,
mobile operator in Asia.

EvoNexus Opens Up New Applications For Incubator
----
EvoNexus, the San Diego-based startup incubator, has opened up
application for its next program, with a deadline of January 23rd.
EvoNexus, which is run by CommNexus, said it will provide fully
furnished open space, mentorship, and access to startup programming to
companies accepted to the incubator--and will also consider those same
companies for QualcommLabs@EvoNexus, the business acceleration and
funding program being run by EvoNexus for Qualcomm. CommNexus, which
is led by Rory Moore, said that it has admitted 39 companies since
2009 to the incubator, with five new companies admitted to the last
cycle of the program. The QualcommLabs@EvoNexus initiative invests up
to $250,000 in companies, in addition to providing access to
Qualcomm's resources for startups.

FreedomPop Takes On Home Broadband
----
Los Angeles-based free, broadband access firm FreedomPop--which is
backed by the founders of Skype--said Wednesday that it is expanding
into the home broadband market. The company said it will begin
accepting preorders for a home modem which will provide free, high
speed Internet in homes and small offices. FreedomPop said its new Hub
Burst home modems are scheduled to ship next month, and will allow
users to access up to 1GB of free data a month. The firm will also
offer up premium bandwidth starting at $10 per month. FreedomPop is
leveraging the legacy 4G WiMax network of Clearwire for its service.
The company is led by Stephen Stokols. FreedomPop said that premium
users will be able to get their bandwidth at 80 percent chapear than
today's DSL or cable, at speeds faster than typical DSL and on par
with most cable providers. The company's venture backers are Mangrove
Capital, DCM and Atomico.

Viddy Hits Android
----
Los Angeles-based mobile video sharing application Viddy has just
debuted on Android, the company said Wednesday morning, making the
Viddy experience available to a host of new smartphones. The
app--previously only available on iPhone--lets users capture video and
share that video with others. Viddy--which has been billed the
Instagram of video--allows users to capture, share, and comment on
videos. Viddy said that the software works for both Android Ice Cream
Sandwich and Jelly Bean operating systems, and works on 735 different
Android smartphones and tablets, across 136 countries and 16 different
languages. The app is free.

Scopely Debuts Developer Program
----
Los Angeles-based social game developer Scopely announced today that
it has launched a new, developer program called LeveUp, which looks to
help top independent game studios co-develop titles with Scopely.

MiTu Network Finds Funding For Latino YouTube Network
----
MiTú, a Los Angeles-based YouTube network focused on Latino content,
said yesterday that it has closed a round of funding. The funding was
led by The Chernin Group, and also included Allen DeBevoise of
Machinima, Juan Cristóbal Ferrer of Ferrer Comunicación, Advancit
Capital, and CODE Advisors. The firm, which is led by Doug Greiff,
Beatriz Acevedo, and Roy Burstin, said it has a network of more than
350 channels reaching a subscriber base exceeding 2.3 million. TCG
adds a board member as part of the funding.

ACADIA Pharmaceuticals Gets $86.4M In PIPE
----
San Diego-based biopharmaceuticals firm ACADIA Pharmaceuticals said
Wednesday that it has raised $86.4M in a private placement. Source of
the new funding was not announced. The firm said the new funds will go
towards completing its Phase III program aimed at treating Parkinson's
disease. ACADIA said Jefferies & Company, Inc. and Cowen and Company,
LLC acted as join lead placement agents for the funding, with JMP
Securities LLC as co-placement agent.
