The two said Thursday that they will allow members of the military to mail customized postcards to anyone in the world, directly from their phone, via Postcard On The Run's mobile app. (More...) http://bit.ly/SVYwms Helinet Aviation Buys Shotover, Gets Funding ---- Helinet, a provider of flight services to the entertainment, media, and other industries which is based in Van Nuys, said Thursday that it has acquired Shotover Camera Systems, a developer of a gyro-stablized, camera systems used for shooting aerial footage in Ultra High Definition. Financial terms of the buy were not announced, however, Helinet said it received funding from a set of investors for the deal. Shotover is based in New Zealand, where its engineering and research team will continue to reside. Helinet said investors in the deal include aerial cinematographers David B. Nowell, ASC and Hans Bjerno, along with Michael Connolly (Leonard Green & Partners), Fred North, Frederick Bond, Peggy North, Dylan Goss, Steve Koster, Larry Blanford, Peter Graf and Luc Poullain. Phone Power Launches Android App ---- Winnetka-based Phone Power, a provider of voice-over-IP calling services, has released a new Android app, which it says allows Android smartphone users to make international calls for "little to nothing". The provider of residential and business voice-over-IP services said the Android app provides a reduced cost for making international, VoIP cals from a smartphone, and follows the release earlier of a similar, iPhone app. Phone Power did not say how much international calling would be in the app; the firm's iPhone version offers up 60 minutes of free international calling before asking users to pay for calling time. textPlus Adds International Calls ---- Marina Del Rey-based textPlus, the provider of free texting and calling services, said Thursday that it has begun offering up inexpensive, international calling services via its Android application. textPlus said Android users in the US and Canada can make calls to any international mobile or landline number starting at two cents a minute. (More...) http://bit.ly/TXsUhE Hello Music Upgrades Social Commerce Service ---- Los Angeles-based Hello Music, the social commerce marketplace run by Rick Camino, has updated its site, with a brand new design and features. The firm said "Hello Music 3.0" includes new features like a social shopping feed; ability to like, pin, tweet, and comment on any products on the site; new, daily deals on gear and services; along with other enhancements. Hello Music said the new site is a result of over 12 months of work. Hello Music is a portfolio company of Elevator Labs. Cynvenio Debuts New Lab Service ---- Westlake Village-based Cynvenio< Biosystems, a developer of technology for the molecular characterization of cancer, said this week that it has launched a new service aimed at helping to isolate, sequence, and enumerate circulating tumor cells. The firm said its new LiquidBiopsy Lab Service uses molecular characterization to identify the specific DNA mutations in cancer and circulating tumor cells, which will allow physicians and researchers to better understand the disease and monitor patients. The company said the availability of the service can help provide personalized medical treatments to patients. Elon Musk Gets IPO At SolarCity; SpaceX Next ---- echnology mogul Elon Musk has made huge waves in Southern California with his success at Hawthorne-based commercial rocket and spaceflight company SpaceX. However, Musk also has his hands in a number of other companies, including Foster City-based SolarCity, which just had a successful IPO (More...) http://bit.ly/UcyBWK SocialVibe Launches New Ad Server ---- SocialVibe, the online advertising technology provider headed by Todd Tappin, said this morning that it has launched a new, Open RTB-compliant rich media and video ad server. The company said the ad server will provide customers with access to its inventory, as well as ability to use its TrueTargeting audience-targeting solution. SocialVibe's advertising technology is focused on what it calls "engagement advertising", which uses rich media and interaction to pull in consumer attention. The new ad server adds real time bidding capability for SocialVibe's engagement advertising. Masimo Debuts Pulse Oximeter For iPhone, iPad ---- Irvine-based Masimo, the developer of pulse oximeters used for measuring oxygen levels in patients, has connected its devices to the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. The company said its iSpO2 pulse oximeter cable and sensors connect to the devices using a 30-pin connector, and lets users check their own blood oxygen, pulse rate, and perfusion index measurements using the iPhone. According to Masimo, it is targeting the new device not for medical uses, but instead for sports and aviation use. However, Masimo did say it is looking to gain CE mark and U.S. FDA 510(k) clearance on a professional version of the pulse oximetry device, the iSpoO2 Medical.
