"One of our core, driving philosophies," co-founder and (More...) http://bit.ly/U4AneD --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tapiture Raises $450,000 ---- Venice-based Tapiture, an online, male-focused site which bills itself a "Pinterest for Men", has raised $450,000 in what looks like a convertible debt funding. The funding came via an SEC filing. Tapiture has not yet announced the funding, which has a target of $1.0M and looks to be still in progress. Tapiture is led by John Ellis. Tapiture launched in October, with a male-focused site which lets uers "tap" things they like. The company is a spinout of Resignation Media. http://www.socaltech.com/intelligence/index.php?action=showdeal&id=47225 SGN Launches Cross-Platform Development Tool ---- Los Angeles-based social and mobile game development firm, SGN, said today that it has launched a new tool called MasterKey, which it says can be used to develop cross-platform titles. The firm said the proprietary technology allows its to reduce the time, effort, and cost to publish across multiple platforms, allowing it to publish a game across Facebook, iOS, and Android. The company said it has been using the tool internally, for such games as Panda Jam and Bingo Blingo; SGN also said it plans to soon make the technology available to third party developed games published through its network. SGN is headed by Chris DeWolfe, one of the founders of MySpace, and is venture backed by Austin Ventures. Bluebeam Wins Skanska ---- Pasadena-based Bluebeam Software, said this morning that it has signed project development and construction company Skanska as a customer. Skanska is the world's largest project development and construction group, according to Bluebeam. Bluebeam's PDF-based software is used for for creating interactive, complex PDF-based files for the architectural, engineering and construction firms, oil and gas, and other industries, Financial terms of the deal were not announced. Bluebeam's software includes such features as 2D and 3D PDFs, ability to redline documents; CAD tools and measurements; and many other features which connect multiple layers of information together in PDF format. CraveOnline Names Executive Editor ---- Los Angeles-based online male-focused publisher CraveOnline Media, which is a unit of Evolve Media, said today that it has named Jason Kobely as Executive Editor. Kobely previously served as News Director at KNSI Radio in St. Cloud, MN, and also served at KXTV News 10 (Sacramento) and NewsTalk 1530 KFBK (Sacramento). CraveOline said that Kobely will oversee all facets of its editorial content. AtheroNova Sets Chief Medical Officer ---- Irvine-based AtheroNova, the biotech working on treating atherosclerotic plaque, reported this morning that it has named Dr. Mark K. Wedel as its Senior Vice President of Clinical Affairs, and Chief Medical Officer. Wedel has previously served at such companies as Santaris A/S, ISIS Pharmaceuticals, and Alliance Pharmaceuticals, among others. AtheroNova said it hired Wedel as part of a plan to transition to clinical stage operations in the coming months. Fandango Names New Marketing Head ---- Los Angeles-based Fandango said Monday that it has named a new Vice President of Marketing. Fandango said Adam Rockmore, who was most recently SVP of Marketing for ABC Daytime and SOAPnet, has been appointed to the position, and will lead the company's marketing group. Rockmore also has served at ABC News, the Food Network, and also served a number of other Scripps Networks' properties. Fandango is an online service which lets users buy movie tickets online, and also provides reviews, commentary, and other content around movies. ClimateMinder Acquired By Rainbird ---- Glendale-based ClimateMinder, one of the companies out of the VoiVoda Ventures incubator in Glendale, has been acquired by Rainbird Corp., according to VoiVoda. Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. ClimateMinder developed wireless irrigation monitoring and control products, which were being applied to the agriculture industry. The company's clients had included Monsanto, Driscoll, and Bolthouse farms. VoiVoda said the exit is the fifrth for the firm in the last five years. Hulu Revenue Rise To $695M; Tops 3M Paying Subscribers ---- Hulu, the online video streaming site headed by Jason Kilar, detailed its 2012 numbers Monday, saying that it will close the year with approximately $695M in revenues, a growth of over 65% since 2011. The firm--which has been amazingly open about its finances, despite being a private company---also said it now has over 3 million paying, Hulu plus subscribers. Hulu said its subscriber count more than doubled during the year. Hulu attributed the big gains in both reenues and subscribers to the "crest of two massive waves": the rise of online video advertising and the rise of online video subscription services. Kilar detailed the numbers and provided commentary in a blog post Monday morning. Lynda.com Names New CTO ---- Carpinteria-based Lynda.com, the online video education and tutorial site, said Monday morning that it has named a new CTO. The firm said it has named Frits Habermann as Chief Technology Officer of the company, to help scale out the company's infrastructure. Habermann joins Lynda.com from PopCap Games, where he was CTO and Vice President of Core Technologies. He also has served at RealNetworks, Edmark and Siemens.
