According to a regulatory filing and multiple sources, HeyZap raised $4.8M in a funding round, which came from Qualcomm along with existin investors Union Square Ventures. HeyZap is based in San Francisco, Qualcomm is in San Diego. http://www.socaltech.com/intelligence/index.php?action=showdeal&id=47716 CallFire Claims Record Growth ---- Santa Monica-based cloud telephony provider Callfire, which develops cloud-based telephony services used to automate phone calls and voice applications, reported today that it had record growth in 2012. The company said it saw revenue growth of 58 percent for the company. Actual financials were not disclosed by the company. The company attributed the growth in calls and use of its service to the U.S. elections as well as Hurricane Sandy. Callfire was a provider of calling and telephony services to many political campaigns during the election cycle, and is also used by companies for emergency communications. Among other statistics, CallFire said it billed its customers for more than 185 million minutes in 2012; the firm offers up those minutes starting at 3.5 cents per minute. CallFire is led by Dinesh Ravishanker. PatientSafe Solutions Lands $20M ---- San Diego-based PatientSafe Solutions, a developer of mobile platforms used for running healthcare operations and accessing patient data, said today that it has raised $20M in a Series C funding round. The round was led by Merck Global Health Innovation (GHI) fund, and also included Camden Partners, TPG Capital, and Psilos Group. PatientSafe develops apps which run on the Apple iPod Touch used for medication administration, specimen collection, care intervention, and more. As part of the funding, the company said that Merck's Max Kahn joins the company's board. http://www.socaltech.com/intelligence/index.php?action=showdeal&id=47715 Illumina Buys Verinata Health ---- San Diego-based life sciences equipment firm Illumina said over the weekend that it is in an agreement to acquire Verinata Health, a provider of non-invasive testing for fetal chromosomal abnormalities. Illumnina said it would pay $350M plus up to $100M in milestone payments for Verinata. Verinata's tests are used for prenatal testing. Illumina was advised by Bank of America Merrill Lynch and Covington & Burling LLP in the deal. Verinata was venture backed by Alloy Ventures, Mohr Davidow Ventures, and Sutter Hill Ventures. Ambryx Names New CEO ---- San Diego-based Ambrx, a biopharmaceuticals company developing antibodies and proteins, including a Phase 2b growth hormone compound, said today that it has named Lawson Macartney as President and CEO of the company. Macartney also joins the company's board of directors. Macartney was previously at Shire, GlaxoSmithKline PLC, Astra Pharmaceuticals and Ribozyme Pharmaceuticals. LaunchpadLA Opens Spring Applications, Bumps Investment Dollars ---- Santa Monica-based startup accelerator LaunchpadLA has just opened up its spring 2013 class applications, and bumped the amount it invests in startups. The accelerator--run by Sam Teller--is one of a crop of startup accelerators which have been the driving force behind the Silicon Beach startup community over the last year. As part of the new class, the group said it is now offering up $100,000 in investments along with free office space for four months, as well as connections to mentors, investors, and advisors. The amount invested per startup is double what LaunchpadLA was previously offering to startups in the program. Those amounts have been part of an "accelerator arms race" occurring in the Los Angeles area, as multiple, well-qualified accelerators have been competing to pick off the best crop of new startups from entrepreneurs. LaunchpadLA said that applications to the program are open until February 3rd. http://launchpad.la/apply/ Hulu Losing CEO Jason Kilar, CTO Rich Tom ---- Los Angeles-based Hulu announced on its blog Friday afternoon that Jason Kilar, the firm's CEO, has decided to depart the company, along with CTO Rich Tom. Reason for the move was not given, however, Kilar said that the two will be working with the company's board to ensure "ample runway" in the transition. Although surprising, Kilar has been a top prospect in CEO and other top positions at Facebook and Yahoo, among other high profile technology companies. It's unclear if Kilar and Tom are heading to another company or might be embarking on their own startup. Wonderware Founder Dennis Morin Passes Away ---- Dennis Morin, co-founder of software firm Wonderware, passed away last week after a battle with cancer, reports the OCBJ. Morin started Wonderware in 1987 with Phil Huber. Wonderware was acquired in 1998 by Invensys PLC, after becoming one of the biggest software providers in the industrial automation.
