applications, reported today that it had record growth in 2012. The
company said it saw revenue growth of 58 percent for the company.
Actual financials were not disclosed by the company. The company
attributed the growth in calls and use of its service to the U.S.
elections as well as Hurricane Sandy. Callfire was a provider of
calling and telephony services to many political campaigns during the
election cycle, and is also used by companies for emergency
communications. Among other statistics, CallFire said it billed its
customers for more than 185 million minutes in 2012; the firm offers

LaunchpadLA Opens Spring Applications, Bumps Investment Dollars
----
Santa Monica-based startup accelerator LaunchpadLA has just opened up
its spring 2013 class applications, and bumped the amount it invests
in startups. The accelerator--run by Sam Teller--is one of a crop of
startup accelerators which have been the driving force behind the
Silicon Beach startup community over the last year. As part of the new
class, the group said it is now offering up $100,000 in investments
along with free office space for four months, as well as connections
to mentors, investors, and advisors. The amount invested per startup
is double what LaunchpadLA was previously offering to startups in the
program. Those amounts have been part of an "accelerator arms race"
occurring in the Los Angeles area, as multiple, well-qualified
accelerators have been competing to pick off the best crop of new
startups from entrepreneurs. LaunchpadLA said that applications to the
program are open until February 3rd.

said that the two will be working with the company's board to ensure
"ample runway" in the transition. Although surprising, Kilar has been
a top prospect in CEO and other top positions at Facebook and Yahoo,
among other high profile technology companies. It's unclear if Kilar
and Tom are heading to another company or might be embarking on their
own startup.

week after a battle with cancer, reports the OCBJ. Morin started

January 12, Pasadena -- Serious Games for Simulation, Education and the
Enterprise. Caltech/MIT Enterprise Forum. ‘Game,’ the phoneme, has spread
its wings far beyond familiar "teenage" video games: it now embraces a
variety of new and important applications. Evolving from pre-computer
roots (e.g., "war games" for critical military exercises), today key
computer simulations and training (variously dubbed "games") increasingly
permeate the government world. Likewise, a wide variety of tasks, from
corporate training to childhood education, have been variously recast in a
"game" context with dimensions and purposes quite beyond simple "fun and
entertainment." Today’s program looks at the entrepreneurial / innovation
context of the what-why-how of "serious games" in important social and
commercial endeavors, exploring various facets such as applications,
platforms, areas for growth, investment landscape, and how it all meshes
with the undeniable lure of playing games. See

January 23, Santa Monica -- How to Start Your Own Creative Agency (With
Zero Overhead). General Assembly LA. Alan Stuart, Founder and Creative
Director, One Long House. The economy is in a slump. It has been for a
while. But that can bode well for creatives. Crappy economies are where
good ideas float to the top and bad ones crumble and fail. Consider it
capitalism's natural selection.
Contrary to popular belief, opening a small studio/agency/shop doesn't
take a bunch of money. In fact, there are a ton of advantages to starting
and scaling your creative team in a super lean fashion.
In this class, Alan will share all of the good (and terrible) experiences
of opening his creative cooperative, One Long House, in an attempt to
encourage creative growth and prevent redundant mistakes. Students will
not only learn of the decisions and problems that come with starting a
small creative agency, but their potential solutions as well.. See
