How Google's Old Offices Are Becoming A Tech Hub, with ROC's Walter Grieves
----
In a sign of the growth of the Silicon Beach technology world, last
year, Google moved its headquarters out of a space on Arizona Avenue
in Santa Monica, and into a new fancy headquarters space in Venice.
However, it appears the spirit of innovation and technology didn't
leave Google's old space: instead, that office has become Real Office
Centers (realofficecenters.com), an office center which on a recent
Friday looked to have become somewhat of a hub for Silicon Beach's
startup and investors. We dropped in recently, and found a screening
session for the Tech Coast Angels; a number of former StartEngine,
MuckerLab, and LaunchpadLA startups in residence; not more than a few
startup founders wandering the halls; and a long list of upcoming
technology networking events on the calendar. We talked with Walter
Grieves, who is working on ROC's Community Integration efforts, about
the space and what's happening there.

What's the idea with ROC?

Walter Grieves: Our goal is to bring together universities, startups,
and investors in one place. We find that (More...)

PromoJam Debuts New Self Service Social Promotions Tool
----
If you are a millenial entering the workforce, what would you be most
comfortable with -- a tool designed to work and look like a social
network, or a tool built around an old fashioned corporate enterprise
software UI? With its latest product release, Los Angeles-based
PromoJam is gambling on the first, and made managing and running
social promotions much more like inhabiting a social network than
running enterprise software. (More...)

THQ, South Park Studios In Dispute Over Auction
----
South Park Digital Studios, the owner of the irreverant animated
series, has filed a motion to halt THQ's auction of South Park: The
Stick of Truth. THQ had entered into a deal with South Park in 2011 to
publish The Stick Of Truth, a videogame centered around the South Park
brand. The objection to THQ's auction--which was being held
Tuesday--was first uncoverd by NeoGAF. The Stick Of Truth is just one
part of THQ that was going up for auction today, as the bankrupt
company looked to sell off assets to the highest bidder. No results of
that auction had been announced as of Tuesday afternoon.

January 23, Santa Monica -- How to Start Your Own Creative Agency (With
Zero Overhead). General Assembly LA. Alan Stuart, Founder and Creative
Director, One Long House. The economy is in a slump. It has been for a
while. But that can bode well for creatives. Crappy economies are where
good ideas float to the top and bad ones crumble and fail. Consider it
capitalism's natural selection.
Contrary to popular belief, opening a small studio/agency/shop doesn't
take a bunch of money. In fact, there are a ton of advantages to starting
and scaling your creative team in a super lean fashion.
In this class, Alan will share all of the good (and terrible) experiences
of opening his creative cooperative, One Long House, in an attempt to
encourage creative growth and prevent redundant mistakes. Students will
not only learn of the decisions and problems that come with starting a
small creative agency, but their potential solutions as well.. See

January 24, Irvine -- January Forum: Business Incubators or Business
Accelerators?
Tech Coast Venture Network. Incubators and accelerators are real options
for entrepreneurs interested in starting and growing their new ventures.
With accelerators being the new kid on the block, there seems to be
significant confusion about the differences between the two. Entrepreneurs
use the terms interchangeably, yet the differences may be profound in
structure and what it will mean for the growth path of a venture. At the
same time, there are overlaps between the services provided. Do the two
models serve different purposes and which one is right for you? TCVN is
proud to bring together this extraordinary panel of individuals who will
shed light on the differences between incubators and accelerators and
empower entrepreneurs in reaching their goals. Join us for this
enlightening event and understand what it means to incubate or accelerate.
