Insights: Keeping Your Eyes Open For The People You'll Meet
----
How did a quick weekend trip (for a birthday) to Los Angeles result in
the creation and funding of a startup? Eric Koester, co-founder of
Zaarly, tells the fascinating story in our Insights and Opinions
section today:

"Sounds great," he said. "We'll go to LA for the weekend, hang out
with some friends at Startup Weekend and celebrate your birthday.
It'll be a blast."

Those brief words between two friends and eventual business partners
launched a whirlwind that would wind up becoming a new company, a new
product, and most importantly -- a team of incredibly talented
individuals trying to build a new peer-to-peer platform for amazing
entrepreneurs and small businesses. That was the start of Zaarly.

Insights and Opinions: Turbo-charging your CTO
----
What are some of the key steps that CEOs ought to do to communicate
with their CTOs? For our Insights and Opinions section today, we share
an article by John Shiple, who provides technology consulting to CEOs,
helps outline some of the key things startup (and other) CEOs ought to
know in dealing with their CTO.

How do we raise the level of technical education, discourse, and
requirements in the Internet companies that we build?

Start at the top – with the CEO and CTO. To improve communication
between these two leaders, CEOs should address the following issues:

Clarify your expectations of your CTO.
Learn how you can best support your CTO.
Implement measures to improve the CTO's teams' goals.
Have a plan in place to handle your CTO's departure and replacement.

What if the CTO is hit by a truck and becomes incapacitated? (More...)

Report: CODA Fending Off Vendors Over Unpaid Bills
----
Uh oh. Looks like another, Southern California electric car startup is
having issues. According to a report from GigaOm Thursday afternoon,
Santa Monica-based electric car maker CODA Automotive is embroiled in
a number of lawsuits from its vendors, over unpaid bills. According to
the report, the issues all stem from a major basic problem: CODA isn't
selling enough cars. CODA is not the only local electric car startup
facing serious issues right now: Anaheim-based Fisker Automotive,
which has a much longer list of woes, apparently is hoping to find a
buyer by the end of February, or is at risk of shutting down.

Hulu Gears Up For Super Bowl Ad Season
----
It's not far from the kickoff of the Super Bowl--and best of all, the
many advertisements expected to debut during the sporting event.
However, fans of those advertisements can start getting their Super
Bowl advertising fix now, according to Los Angeles video streaming
Hulu, via the company's online Hulu AdZone. Hulu said Thursday that it
has already begun posting commercial teasers for Super Bowl, and will
also be letting viewers vote on their favorite ads. Hulu's Super Bowl
site this year is sponsored by Toyota. Hulu said it will be posting
all of this year's Super Bowl commercials in real time on game day,
and will also be making those ads available via mobile devices.

Stickam Shuts Down
----
Stickam, the live video streaming service, announced on its web site
Thursday that it would be shutting down its services, effective
11:59PM PST. Reason for the shutdown was not disclosed. The Los
Angeles-based company said that it "did everything we could to keep
this dream alive", but was "sad to have to say goodbye." Stickam had
been founded in 2005. Last August, the company had announced a VIP
membership program, which charged users $39.99 a year to allow them to
livestream themselves to an audience, but apparently, those measures
did not change the economics behind what had started as a free
service. Stickam began as an offshoot of Japanese firm Advanced Video
Communications (AVC).

February 13, Ventura -- Ventura NEXT Program: Customer Discovery. Early
stage entrepreneurs often become infatuated with their product -- building
something to solve a problem they think (or sometimes hope) people actually
have. But the reality is that there is nothing more powerful for an
entrepreneur than building a product that solves a real problem for a
customer. It's only by structured customer discovery that you'll learn
what your customers need to have solved, how to solve it easier, cheaper
or faster, and what they will pay to get the job done. It seems so simple,
but most entrepreneurs waste lots of time and resources bypassing customer
discovery or accomplishing it by trial and error. See

on how to build a real company. This is not a class about how to write a
business plan, and it’s not an exercise in academic research.. this is a
practical course with a flipped-classroom, workshop approach for teams of
2+ co-founders. Similar to Startup Weekend events, NEXT creates an
entrepreneurial experience with all the pressures and demands of a
real-world early-stage startup.. See
