According to Reuters, citing three sources close to the company, Hulu's board has been reaching out to possible buyers of Hulu. It's not the first time Hulu has been shopped by its owners. Hulu has rapidly become one of the largest online companies in Los Angeles over the last few years, and is expected to hit nearly a billion in revenues this year. However, the firm is about to lose its CEO, Jason Kilar, and has continued to struggle with its owners over its future direction. EmiSense Raises $6.5M ---- Ladera Ranch-based EmiSense Technologies, a developer of ceramics-based, particulate matter sensors for smog measurement, said today that it has raised $6.5M in a third round of funding. The funding was led by 9th Street Investments. According to the firm, the new funding will go towards launching products, for research and development, and validation testing. EmiSense is developing particulate matter sensors used for measuring soot and smog, exhaust and intake oxygen sensors, and hydrocarbon sensors. The firm said it has launched its Studio Series, a line of jewelry designed by what it called "fashion's most coveted names". The firm said it is debuting the line with Giles & Brother x JewelMint, designed by Philip Crangi of Giles & Brother and Philip Crangi Jewelry. BeachMint is collaborating with Kate Bosworth and celebrity stylist, Cher Coulter on JewelMint. Peregrine Semiconductor In Satellite Design Win ---- San Diego-based radio frequency semiconductor developer Peregrine Semiconductor reported a design win yesterday, saying that its chips were designed into six, Globalstar mobile communications satellites which were launched in February. The firm said its UltraCMOS Phase Locked Loop (PLL) frequency synthesizer and prescaler devices were launched into orbit with the six Globalstar mobile communications satellites launched in February by Thales Alenia Space in France. The firm's chips are being used as part of equipment for transmitting audio and data communications on the satellites. Local Corporation Debuts New Premium Ad Network ---- Irvine-based online local advertising firm Local Corporation said today that it has launched a new, premium ad network it is calling "Fusion by Local". The firm said the new ad network will let advertisers reach customers in local markets, and provide display advertising both on its own sites and over 1,000 regional media sites. Local said the new ad network would allow brands to target local audiences without having to deal with individual publishers. Nirvanix Steals Away Zynga CIO ---- San Diego-based Nirvanix, the cloud storage service operator, has snagged the current CIO of Zynga as its new CEO, according to the company Monday. (More...) http://bit.ly/103mvCw BuzzMedia Becomes SpinMedia ---- Los Angeles-based online entertainment, music, and advertising firm BuzzMedia is no more: it's just rebranded itself SpinMedia. The publisher, which owns such brands as Celebuzz, Sterogeom, Idolator, JustJared, and many other music-related sites, acquired longtime music magazine Spin back in July of last year. BuzzMedia started its life as BuzzNet. The firm is venture backed by Anthem Ventures, Focus Ventures, Interscope, New Enterprise Associates, Redpoint Ventures, Sutter Hill Ventures, and Universal Music Group. Amazon Studios Greenlights Pilot From Sony Pictures Television ---- Amazon Studios, the original content development arm of e-commerce giant Amazon, said Monday that it has greenlighted a new pilot series, from Sony Pictures Television. Amazon--which has been getting into the business of content in a big way, with its own, Los Angeles production studio and multiple efforts to develop its own content and series--said that the cult film Zombieland has gone into pilot production, which will be made available for free on Amazon Instant Video and LOVEFiLM UK. Amazon said the pilot is the seventh being produced for Amazon Instant Video. Amazon is using online feedback and viewing information on the pilots to determine which ones it will make into full season productions for its online streaming service. Tekelec Acquired By Oracle ---- Tekelec, a developer of telecommunications switching equipment which had its roots in Southern California, has been acquired by Oracle, Oracle announced this morning. Financial terms of the buy were not disclosed. Tekelec had started in Southern California back in 1978, and had been a onetime technology darling when it had its IPO back in 1986. The firm, which was then based in Calabasas, moved out of the area in 2005, taking with it hundreds of jobs. The firm has since been in Morrisville, North Carolina. Tekelec's former Southern California executives are well represented as advisors, investors, and executives at local high tech companies. Sky Dayton Scores Exit At WiFiSlam ---- Sky Dayton, the founder of Boingo Wireless, has just scored an exit at one of his angel investments--WiFiSlam, which was just acquired by Apple on Friday. Apple confirmed the acquisition of WiFiSlam, a developer of indoor, geo-location technology for smartphones, this morning. Financial terms of the buy were not disclosed, but the acquisition of WiFiSlam has been reported to be worth $20M by a number of sources. Sky Dayton is an advisor to WiFiSlam, and one of the initial seed investors in the firm, which has also seed funding from Don Dodge (Google) and Relay Ventures.
