Los Angeles-based Paedae, which is develops software aimed at mobile and online application developers with marketing and monetization, said Tuesday that it will offer the chance at a flight to space--or $200,000--to a new hire. (More...) http://bit.ly/XbRMqc XCOR Reports Rocket Milestone ---- XCOR Aerospace, one of the aerospace startups in Mojave, reported a win yesterday, saying it achieved a "significant" propulsion milestone on its Lynx Suborbital Vehicle. The company said it fired its full piston, pump-powered rocket engine, the foundation of its fully reusable spacecraft. The company said the next step in its testing it to run its engine for the full duration of a full, powered flight of its suborbital vehicle. The firm is looking to eliminate the need for heavy, high-pressure fuel and oxidizer tanks, which it says would allow its system to fly multiple times per day and for "tens of thousands" of flights. XCOR is among a number of firms in Mojave focused on commercial spaceflight, although the firm has yet to launch its vehicles into space. Novatel Wireless Ships MiFi 2 in Canada ---- San Diego-based Wi-Fi modem and mobile hotspot device developer Novatel Wireless said Tuesday that its new, MiFi2 mobile hotspot is now available in Canada, with Bell on its 4G network. Novatel said that Bell has Canada's largest 4G LTE network. The MiFi2 is the firm's mobile hotspot featuring a touchscreen display, which it announced in September. Novatel had announced the deal to ship the device to Bell in Canada in February. Novatel's device are used to connect any, 4G wireless connection into a personal, Wi-Fi hotspot. Broadcom Names New Worldwide Sales VP ---- Irvine-based semiconductor developer Broadcom has appointed a new, Executive Vice President of Worldwide Sales, the firm said Tuesday. Broadcom said it has promoted Michael Hurlston into the position, replacing Thomas Lagatta, who the firm says is retiring at the end of the year. Hurlston was most recently Senior Vice President and General Manger of the Wireless Connectivity Combo business at Broadcom, and has been at the company since 2001. Peregrine Semiconductor Lobs New Patent Suit Against RFMD ---- San Diego-based RF semiconductor maker Peregrine Semiconductor announced Tuesday afternoon that it has filed a new, patent lawsuit against RF Micro Devices, alleging infringement on its patents. Peregrine Semiconductor said it filed the suite in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California. Peregrine already has a patent suit filed against RFMD, which it filed in February of last year. Peregrine said the new patent lawsuit covers U.S. Patent 8,405,147, which it says covers technology that improves the linearity and circuit performance of RF SOI devices. USC's Startup Accelerator Targets 10 Companies, Starts In May ---- More details on the University of Southern California's new Viterbi Startup Garage, the brand new startup accelerator being backed by the United Talent Agency and Kleiner, Perkins, Caufield & Byers, have emerged, with the school saying that it plans to provide grants and mentorship to approximately 10 companies for a 12 week session starting in May. (More...) http://bit.ly/YSfe64 ParkMe Expands In Washington, D.C. ---- Santa Monica-based ParkMe, the venture-backed developer of mobile parking information applications, said Tuesday that it has inked a deal with Washington, D.C.-based parking operator Colonial Parking. ParkMe said that it will provide real-time occupancy information for more than 100 parking facilities in DC via the deal. Financial details of the deal were not disclosed. ParkMe, which is headed by Sam Friedman, offers up a way for mobile users to find available parking and parking rates in various cities; the firm is venture backed by Fontinalis Partners and IDG Ventures. Boingo Debuts Windows 8 App ---- Boingo Wireless, the provider of Wi-Fi services which is based in Los Angeles, said Tuesday morning that it has released a version of its Wi-Finder app for Windows 8. The app allows users to find Boingo's commercial hotspot locations, and will automatically log in subscribers to the service. Boingo operates a network of Wi-Fi locations, which are billed through a central plan. One of the features of the new software is integration with Bing maps, letting users find hotspots by location and getting driving directions to those locations. The round was led by Finestere Ventures, Two Oceans, and the Missouri Soybean Merchandising Council (MSMC). The firm said it is targeting soybeans and rice to increase crop yield and oil content. The firm is headed by Han Chen, and was incubated by Kapyon Ventures, a San Diego based incubation firm focused on the development of technology startups from global research institutes.
