CODA Holdings said this morning that it will restructure its business around its energy storage technology, the segment of its business which has been taking the battery management and thermal management systems it developed in creating its cars and applying it to energy storage for the commercial, residential, and industrial market. (More...) http://bit.ly/18oIfvH ACTIVE Network Loses CEO, Chairman ---- In a big leadership executive shuffle over at San Diego-based ACTIVE Network, the company announced today that its current CEO, Matthew Landa, has resigned, as has its Executive Chairman and Chairman of the board, David Alberga. Reason for the big switchup at its executive ranks was not given. According to ACTIVE Network, it has appointed Jon Belmonte, former Chief Media Officer and Chief Operating Officer at the company as interim CEO, and has launched a search for a permanent CEO. At the same time, the company said it had "positive" 2013 first quarter results, releasing preliminary results of $106M in first quarter total net revnue, up 12%, with a net loss of $15.2M. Active Network is a provider of online sports registration and other related services. The Trade Desk Debuts Real Time Bidding On Video Ads ---- Ventura-based advertising exchange The Trade Desk is moving into real time, video advertising, the company announced this morning. The Trade Desk said it has launched full RTB video advertising capabilities on its platform, so that it now supports display, video, and social advertising. The Trade Desk, headed by Jeff Green, said the new video support adds pre-, mid-, and post roll video, 15-, 30- and 60-second inventory, and companion banners. The Trade Desk develops a platform used by advertising buyers to manage their online advertising campaigns. Machinima Hits Xbox 360 ---- Los Angeles-based YouTube entertainment channel Machinima launched on Xbox LIVE Tuesday, the first third party app to launch worldwide on Microsoft's Xbox 360 marketplace. The launch--which was first detailed by Microsoft and Machinima last week--lets users access a large library of Machinima's shows, including Inside Gaming Daily, Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn, and many other series. Machinima produces a huge amount of gaming-related content, which it publishes directly to users via YouTube and other channels. Local Market Launch Scores $1.5M ---- Santa Barbara-based Local Market Launch, a new startup founded by former ValueClick founder Brian Coryat, said Tuesday that it has raised $1.5M in a Series A funding round. The round came from Rincon Venture Partners. According to Local Markte Launch, it is developing a "local presence solution" which helps businesses get found easier by search engines, by optimizing business listings on the local level. The company said it has now raised $2.7M in funding, including an earlier seed funding. According to a filing from United Online, Goldston will resign both as an officer and director of the firm immediately after the spinoff. The company said the move would come due to a "change in control" at United Online, and that will make the employment change an "involuntary termination" giving him entitlement to severance. Goldston was Chairman and CEO of NetZero before it became United Online, and headed up NetZero's IPO in 1999, during the original Web 1.0 Internet boom. Report: Coda Automotive Buried in Lawsuits ---- In what looks like more bad news for Southern California's electric car dreams, Santa Monica-based Coda Automotive is apparently up to its neck in lawsuits from its vendors, from payment issues at the company. http://bit.ly/16kdoUn Mindspeed Seeks Buyer, Hires Investment Banker ---- Another day, another Southern California high tech company on the block: Newport Beach-based semiconductor developer Mindspeed said late Tuesday afternoon that it has retained Morgan Stanley & Co., the investment bank, to help the firm with "strategic alternatives". Mindspeed did not give other details on the move, however, "strategic alternatives" is widely used as the codeword for "looking for a buyer" in the industry. The move came as Mindspeed announced preliminary second quarter 2013 revenues of $35.4M, which fell within the range of its already slashed expectations for the quarter. The startup--which debuted its online service in March--said the new, free apps let users find all kinds of services and book appointments that fit their schedule. Kuyam was founded by Kourosh Gohar. The company is specifically targeting busy mothers with its new app and service. Hulu: Streaming, Subscriptions Up ---- Los Angeles-based Hulu released some new numbers on the use of the company's streaming video Tuesday, saying that it has set new records for revenue, video streaming, and subscribers to Hulu Plus. Galica, in post to Silicon Beach's startup community via StartupDigest, said he has resigned from the startup world, departing his company BEASTMODE.FM and has quit helping to curate StartupDigest. Galica said he actually abandoned BEASTMODE.FM (and its predecessor, ShareSquare) in January. The move apparently comes as Galica is looking to overcome health problems. Galica posted rather candidly on the drug addiction problems he is facing, citing the pressures of startup life as one of the contributing factors.
