Lumena Pharmaceuticals Gets $23M
----
San Diego-based Lumena Pharmaceuticals announce today that it has
raised $23M in a Series A funding round, to go towards developing oral
therapeutics for rare liver diseases. The funding came from Pappas
Ventures, RiverVest Venture Partners and Alta Partners.  According to
Lumena, the new funds will go towards clinical development of its lead
product candidate, which is aimed at treating cholestatic liver
disease in pediatric and adult patients. Lumena said it has added
David R. Savello of Pappas Ventures, John McKearn of RiverVest, and
Robert Alexander of ZS Pharma to its board as part of the funding.

Corent Technology Debuts New Software
----
Aliso Viejo-based Corent Technology, the developer of software which
makes it easier for companies to port their software to the
software-as-a-service model, said Tuesday that it has released a new
product. The firm said it has released SurPaas, which it called a
"SaaS-Enablement" software platform to make it easier for companies to
make their software available via software-as-a-service. The company
said its technology allows companies to make their applications
available via SaaS without the time and expense of having to alter the
code of the software application. Pricing on the software was not
announced. Corent is led by Feyzi Fatehi.

National Technical Systems Wins Smart Energy Company
----
Calabasas-based testing and engineering services firm National
Technical Systems has signed up the developer of smart energy devices,
the company announced today. NTS said that Tendril, a developer of
smart energy monitoring devices and systems, has tapped the company as
the exclusive test lab for a certification program. NTS said it will
execute testing of smart energy devices from third party
manufacturers, to verify they work with Tendril's platform. Financial
impact and details of the deal were not disclosed.

Viddy In Recap, To Return Some Funds, Says Report
----
A report Tuesday from AllthingsD says that once-hot Los Angeles
startup Viddy is recapitalizing, and will return $18M of the $30M it

DFJ Frontier Bolsters Team With Media Vet
----
Los Angeles-based venture capital investment firm DFJ Frontier has
significantly bolstered the company's team, saying Tuesday that it has
added Merrill Brown--former founder of MSNBC--as a Venture Partner.
DFJ Frontier said that Brown will be based in New York, and will work
both on the East Coast and the Northwest. Brown is curerntly at the
Montclair State University School of Communication and Media, where he
also continue to serve, and prior to that also had served at
Journalism Online (acquired by RR Donnelley); Realnetworks; MSNBC.com
(as Editor in Chief/SVP); and worked withTime Magazine, NBC, Court TV,
among other companies and clients. He's also been involved with such
companies as Virurl.com, GoLocal, Evri.com, and Now Public.

Demand Media Gets Second $100M+ Quarter

Santa Monica-based online digital media publisher Demand Media keeps
on getting bigger and bigger. The firm reported its latest quarterly
results Tuesday, reporting $100.6M in total revenues, its second $100M

WD Partners With SanDisk On Solid State Drives
----
WD, the Irvine-based storage giant, is finally getting into the solid
state disk drive market, via a new partnership with SanDisk, the two
said today. According to the companies, they are collaborating on a
new line of hybrid storage devices, which bundle together flash memory
from SanDisk with hard drive technology from WD. Financial details of
the link were not announced by the companies. According to WD and
SanDisk, the new line of WD Black Solid State Hybrid Drives (SSHDs)
fit into a 2.5 inch form factor, and start at 500GB of capacity; the
companies said the drive provides almost 50 percent less volume than a
current, standard notebook hard drive.

TenFarms Gets $2.7M For Smartphone Advertising Software
----
Los Angeles-based TenFarms, the mobile application development startup
headed by Nils Forsblom, announced Tuesday morning that it has raised
$2.7M in an angel funding round, to launch a new mobile advertising
product called Adtile to the market. TenFarms did not disclose the
names of those angel investors. According to TenFarms, its new Adtile
mobile advertising product is aimed at making it easy and simple to
integrate apps into mobihle apps and websites; the firm says its
product allows mobile app developers to automatically include ads,
which are targeted based on keywords, categories, and more. TenFarms
is the company behind mobile photo polling and social app Photopoll.
