However, two, Southern California firms drove the inclusion of two other, venture capital investors on the list--Michael Moritz of Sequoia Capital (for his investment in Monrovia-based Green Dot), and Byron Deeter of Bessemer Venture Partners (for his investment in Los Angeles-based Cornerstone OnDemand). Forbes ranks its top list of venture capitalists based on their investment returns and who the publication says "were most instrumental in creating the most impactful and valuable companies of tomorrow." http://onforb.es/16h4G9B Boingo Expands Wi-Fi Network In China ---- Los Angeles-based Wi-Fi provider Boingo Wireless has expanded its coverage in China, saying Wednesday that it has added Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (CAN), Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG) and Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport (SHA) to its network. Boingo said the addition of the airports means it offers its Wi-Fi serviecs at four of the top five most highly trafficked airports in the country, serving more than 195 million travelers annually. Boingo operates an extensive network of Wi-Fi hotspots globally, which allow subscribers access to wireless service through a single, unified billing and subscription plan. Boingo's Wi-Fi network is also used by its partners, such as Orange France, NTT DOCOMO, Skype, TeliaSonera, LGU+, Korea Telecom, Telefonica, and Verizon. BLANKSPACES Aims At Downtown LA With Crowdfunding Effort ---- BLANKSPACES, one of the original coworking spaces in the Los Angeles area, told its supporters Wednesday that it is looking to open up a new space in downtown LA--if it can raise enough money through a crowdsourcing effort. BLANKSPACES, in a crowdfunding effort posted on Crowdfunder, said it is looking to raise at least $35,000 to bring coworking to downtown Los Angeles. The company said the funding will add data cabling, Wi-Fi access points, phones, displays, printers, audio-visual, and more to a 7500 square foot space downtown. BLANKSPACES said it would give everything from a shout-out on Twitter, to private office space depending on how much people contribute to the effort. Chromatik Raises $5.7M For Music Software ---- Chromatik, the music software company which is revolutionizing sheet music, has raised $5.7M in funding, part of an ongoing $8.8M fundraising effort by the company, according to a regulatory filing by the firm. The Santa Monica startup, which is led by Matt Sandler, develops iPad applications which replace paper sheet music, and which has been rapidly been adopted by musicians. Details on the new funding have not yet been announced by the company, which has previously raised funding from 500 Startups, Kapor Capital, LaunchpadLA, Learn Capital, MuckerLab, and many angels. PriceGrabber said its new "Highest Rated Merchant Awards" will honor retailers who receive outstanding ratings and reviews on its site, across a number of categories. PriceGrabber said that retailers winning awards include B&H Photo-Video (checkout experience), Crutchfield (shipping and delivery), 6pm.com (price), and Diapers.com (overall shopping experience). PriceGrabber allows users of the site to submit their ratings and reviews on any of the retailers features on the comparison shopipng site. PriceGrabber says it features over 80 milion products and services across the site, from more than 11,000 merchants and sellers. Atlas Launches Mobile Appointments App ---- Wish you had a better calendar app? Los Angeles-based GetAtlas has launched its mobile apps for iOS and Android into beta this week, looking to make it easier for users to track and schedule their appointments and calendar. The Launchpad LA company, which has raised $700,000 form such investors as the Tech Coast Angels, Maverick Angels, Pasadena Angels, Angel Capital Entrepreneur Fund, Clark Landry, and Yuri Pikover, made a big media push this week on the launch of its apps. Launchpad's apps provide a simple, coordinated way to schedule and coordinate meetings with others, eliminating the back and forth emails, phone calls, and other hassles in setting up appointments. MaxLinear Gets Design Win At Technicolor ---- Carlsbad-based RF semiconductor developer MaxLinear said yesterday that it has scored a design win with Technicolor. MaxLinear, which develops integrated radio frequency (RF) and mixed-signal ICs used in the communications market, said that one of its cihps has been used for a high definition, set-top box for the Latin American market. shipment volumes and financial impact of the win was not disclosed.
