Jack Bicer: Sixty-six percent of shopping carts are abandoned, and, on the average, it takes five steps to complete a shopping cart, which can take anywhere from a few minutes (More...) http://www.socaltech.com/how_sekur_me_shopping/s-0052193.html --------------------------------------------------------------------------- RF Industries Sells Unit To Management ---- San Diego-based RF Industries, a manufacturer of interconnects and cable assemblies, said Thursday that it has sold its RadioMobile division to the current management team of the division, to a new company, RadioMobile. Financial terms of the spinoff were not announced. According to RF Industries, in exchange for the transfer of assets, it will receive a portion of all of RadioMobile's future revenues for three years. RadioMobile develops mobile, public safety communications systems, and had been acquired earlier by RF Industries. RF Industries said the spinoff comes after synergies from its acquisition of RadioMobile "never materialized." The Gores Group Sells Enterasys To Extreme Networks ---- Los Angeles-based private equity firm The Gores Group said today that it has closed a transaction to sell Enterasys Networks to Extreme Networks, via its joint venture with Siemens AG. According to Gores Group, Unify (formerly Siemens Enterprise Communications) sold Enterasys to help further focus the company on its "core mission". Unify is a joint venture of The Gores Group and Siemens AG. Gores bought Enterasys back in 2006 for $386M. Netwrix Names Marketing VP ---- Irvine-based Netwrix, a developer of configuration management and auditing software, said today that it has named Nick Cavalancia as its new Vice President of Marketing. Cavalancia had previously been at SpectorSoft, serving as Vice President of Marketing. He also had served at ScriptLogic. LA Taxi Company Challenges Uber, Lyft, Sidecar ---- The battle for control over LA's streets--and transportation--continued today, as one of the major taxi providers in the city--United Independent Taxi Drivers (UITD), has filed a lawsuit claiming Uber, Lyft, and Sidecar pose unfair competition to the company--and have resulted in a "sharp drop" in business for the company. UITD--which is one of the companies working with competing smartphone app provider Flywheel to counter the other ridesharing companies--told the LA Weekly it has seen at least a drop of 30 percent in business from weekend club-goers in the South Bay and in West Hollywood. BLANKSPACES Expands Into Downtown LA ---- Coworking space BLANKSPACES said today that it has opened up its third location in Southern California, and has opened up a new office location in downtown Los Angeles. The company--which was one of the first coworking spaces in Southern California--said it has opened up a new location between 5th and 6th street, near Pershing Square. The coworking operator said that the new location has eight team offices, ten individual offices, and three meeting rooms. BLANKSPACES also has locations in Santa Monica and Mid-Wilshire. SnapMD Launches New Telemedicine Service ---- Los Angeles-based SnapMD said this week that it has launched a new, software-as-a-service based telemedicine system, which helps healthcare providers better connect with their patients. The startup, which is led by Dave Skibinski, said its new Connected Care telemedicine system offers up live video, audio, and text message consultation between patients and their primary care and specialty care physicians. Pricing on the new offering was not announced. JumpStartFund Names Hyperloop Effort ---- JumpStartFund, the online, crowd-sourcing site which looks to help create companies using the power of the community, said today that its community members have named the company which is looking to bring Elon Musks's Hyperloop concept to life. JumpStartFund--which is based in El Segundo--said its community has voted to name the company Hyperloop Transportation Technologies, and also has tapped into ANSYS, GloCal Network Corporation, and UCLA"s Architecture and Urban Design program SUPRASTUDIO to work on the effort. JumpStartFund has tapped two experts, including a SpaceX veteran, to try to turn Musks's idea for a super-high speed transportation system into reality. Green Dot Expands Walmart Prepaid Cards ---- Pasadena-based prepaid debit card provider Green Dot said Thursday that it has expanded the line of products it offers through Walmart, under the Walmart MoneyCard brand. According to Green Dot and Walmart, they have added six new card types to its line of cards, ranging from a "basic" low cost card to a "MoneyCard Preferred" card with waived monthly service fees for customers with direct deposit. The two also added a number of affiliate cards--including one linked to NASCAR, another to the NFL, to one issued with AARP. Achates Power In Technology Deal With Piston Engine Manufacturer ---- San Diego-based Achates Power, which is developing more efficient internal combustion engines, has linked with a major manufacturer of opposed-piston engines, Fairbanks Morse Engine. (More...) NantWorks Buys Alcatel-Lucent's Digital Multimedia Solutions Business ---- Los Angeles-based NantWorks, the investment and umbrella company for the projects of billionaire Dr. (More...) J2 Global Buys UK Email Security Provider ---- Los Angeles-based J2 Global announced this morning that it has acquired another company, this time a UK-based email services provider called EPA Cloud. Financial terms of the buy were not disclosed. EPA Cloud provides email security and management. J2 Global said it will use the acquisition to expand its customer base, technical expertise, sales, support, and operations in the UK and the rest of Europe. J2 said it did not expect the acquisition to be material to its results. J2 Global has been acquiring many email, fax, online marketing, and other companies globally, and runs such services as eFax, FuseMail, Onebox, plus also owns publisher Ziff Davis. Nimble Ties Into HootSuite ---- Santa Monica-based Nimble, the developer of customer relationship management and contact management software, said today that it has linked its app into social media management service Hootsuite. According to Nimble, the new Nimble Contact App for HootSuite allows users to see and interact with contacts in their Nimble account directly from the main HootSuite screen. Nimble's service tracks all contacts with a user--whether it's email, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, or other means--to help users better manage things like sales and business relationships. HootSuite develops a social media management software product which makes it easier for users to manage their social media efforts across a variety of social services from a single interface. DTS Wins Indonesian Smartphone Brand ---- Calabasas-based audio processing technology provider DTS has signed on another licensee of its audio technology, saying this morning that Indonesian smartphone developer Mito Mobile will incorporate its products into a new line of mobile devices. Financial impact of the deal was not announced. DTS said that Mito Mobile will use its DTS Sound audio processing technology in its latest Android smartphone, the Fantasy A50. DTS develops the software and algorithms to help provide surround sound and improve the quality of audio on phones and other consumer electronics. ServiceMesh Acquired By CSC ---- Santa Monica-based ServiceMesh, the developer of enterprise, cloud management tools headed by Eric Pulier, has been acquired by CSC, the two said late Wednesday afternoon. Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. According to CSC, it will use the acquisition to help it transform itself into a "next-generation" IT company. ServiceMesh develops enterprise cloud software management products, used to manage enterprise apps running in private, public, and hybrid cloud environments. The acquisition is the second exit for Eric Pulier in the last month--his other company, Desktone, was just acquired by VMware two weeks ago. ServiceMesh was backed by Ignition Partners. Domain, Versant Portfolio Firm Veracyte Hits IPO Market ---- Southern California venture capital investors Domain Associates and Versant Venture saw a public exit of one of their portfolio companies this morning, molecular diagnostics equipment maker Veracyte. Veracyte debuted on the NASDAQ Global Market this morning at $13.00 per share, and was trading slightly down at $12.95 this morning. Veracyte's other investors include Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers and TPG Biotech. Interestingly enough, Southern California's IPO activity in the last few months has almost been exclusively biotechnology and medical devices companies, with such companies as Sorrento Therapeutics, Aerie Pharmaceuticals, Vital Therapies, Celladon, Xencor, Tandem Diabetes, Fate Therapeutics, and Evoke Pharma all in some stage of an IPO in the last month. Ashton Kutcher: Actor, Investor, Product Engineer? ---- In what might be the first ever "celebrity product engineer", computer maker Lenovo held a launch event yesterday at Youtube Space LA for a new tablet, announcing that it has partnered with Ashton Kutcher to be the newest product engineer on its new line of tablets. Lenovo said that Kutcher will work with the company's engineering teams to help develop and market the company's new Yoga line of tablets, providing input and decision-making into design, specifications, software and usage scenarios. Financial details of the partnership were not announced. Kutcher has been a very active investor in high tech companies via his investment company, A-Grade Investments, and has made investments in such companies as Airbnb, Fab, Foursquare, Uber, and others. Amazon.com Expands In The Inland Empire ---- E-commerce giant Amazon.com said Tuesday that it is opening up another fulfillment center in the Inland Empire, in Moreno Valley, which it says will create more than 1,000 full time jobs. The new center will be the fourth fulfillment center for the company in California. The new employees will help to pick, pack, and ship products to Amazon.com customers. Amazon.com also has centers in Patterson, San Bernardino, and Tracy. The e-commerce company said that its jobs pay on average 30 percent more than traditional, retail jobs, and also include stock grants and healthcare. The new center is being built by Trammell Crow Company and Clarion Partners as part of a joint venture. Emulex Debuts New HBA Technology Aimed At Flash Storage ---- Costa Mesa-based storage networking hardware developer Emulex said Tuesday that it has rolled out new technology for its host bus adapters, which helps to optimize the performance of its products with flash-based arrays and cache. Emulex said its new Gen 5 Fibre Channel (FC) Flash Services technology helps optimize I/O performance of its products when running with those high speed storage devices. The new technology is a no-charge upgrade to the company's existing hardware. The new technology includes a quality-of-service feature which prioritizes storage I/O based on the specific device being accessed, so that the much faster flash-based storage can receive priority on storage networking traffic. Rubicon Project Grows Executive Team ---- Los Angeles-based Rubicon Project, the digital advertising startup which helps publishers automate ad placements on their websites via a real-time, trading platform, has expanded its management team, saying that it has named four new executives Tuesday. The two include a new Chief Marketing Officer, Julie Ginches; a new Head of Seller Cloud, Kaylie Smith; a new SVP, Product, Stacey Gomes; and a new SVP, Operations & Strategy, Ingrid Lestiyo. Ginches was previously at DataXu; Smith was previously heading up APAC efforts for Rubicon; Gomes was most recently at ZeroChaos; and Lestiyo was previously in charge of product management for Rubicon's mobile development. Magisto Gets Funding From Qualcomm ---- Magisto, a developer of social video editing tools, said Tuesday that it has raised $13M in a funding round, which came from San Diego-based Qualcomm, along with flash memory developer Sandisk. The Series C funding round also included Magma Venture Partners and Horizons Ventures. Magisto is based in Israel. Ixia Acquires Net Optics ---- Calabasas-based network testing equipment and software developer Ixia announced Tuesday that it is acquiring Net Optics, a developer of network and application analysis products. Ixia said it will pay $190M in cash for Net Optics. Ixia said that net Optics had $49M in revenue in 2012, and had revenues of $42M for the first nine months of 2013. Ixia was advised by Stifel, Nicolaus & Company and Bryan Cave LLP in the deal; Net Optics was advised by BofA Merrill Lynch and Dorsey & Whitney LLP. Convertro Names Two VPs ---- Santa Monica-based Convertro, the developer of marketing analytics software headed by startup veteran Jeff Zwelling, has bolstered its executive talent base today, announcing the hiring of two new VPs. Convertro said that it has named Paul Bates as Vice President of Advertiser Solutions, and Sarah Chambers as Vice President of Account Management. Bates was previously VP of Product Management at MarketShare, and Chambers was previously at Clearsaleing (eBay Enterprise Attribution). Convertro's products help companies understand the attribution of the marketing efforts, to determine which marketing efforts are converting best to sales.
