RECENT FUNDING EVENTS --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Silvercar Launches At LAX ---- Los Angeles has been a hot market for smartphone-driven services, with the latest service launching in the market today being Silvercar, a venture backed startup offering up luxury car rentals with GPS, SiriusXM satellite radio, in-car Wi-Fi and other features. According to Silvercar, it launched operations today at Los Angeles International (LAX), its sixth location nationwide. Silvercar--which is venture backed by Austin Ventures, CrunchFund, SV Angel, and others--lets users book their rentals using either an iOS or Android smartphone app, handling both reservations and returns via that app, and allowing users to unlock the company's signature Audi A4 cars by scanning a QR code on the windshield. Autobytel Makes Investment In SaleMove ---- Irvine-based automotive information and leads site Autobytel said today that it has made an investment in SaleMove, a provider of online car buying technology. According to Autobytel, it made the investment as part of a deal to become the exclusive provider to the auto industry of SaleMove's technology. SaleMove provides tools for live video, audio, and text-based chat, all aimed at guiding consumers through the online car buying process in real-time. Size of the investment in SaleMove was not disclosed, however, Autobytel said it plans to support the company's ongoing development of its technology. According to Nimble, the new update provides significant updates to the software, and also includes widgets which integrate the software with Google Gmail, Microsoft Outlook, and HootSuite. Nimble, which is led by Jon Ferrara, develops software which lets people track their interaction with customers, clients, business contacts, and others across email, social networks, and much more. The new software also includes features to remind users to stay in touch with certain people. M-GO Debuts On LG Smart TVs ---- Los Angeles-based movie and television streaming service M-GO and electronics company LG Electronics said today that they are rolling out M-GO's service on LG's new Internet-connected, smart televisions. The two said that LG is preloading M-Go's software into LG's Smart TV homepage. Financial details of the deal were not announced. M-GO lets users purchase access to movies, via rentals and purchases. M-GO is led by John Batter, and is a joint venture of DreamWorks Animation and Technicolor. The company differentiates itself in the market by offering straight rentals and purchases for specific titles, rather than the more dominant model of subscription access. MSC Software Wins Volvo Group ---- Newport Beach-based simulation software developer MSC Software said today that it has signed up truck manufacturer Volvo Group as a customer. MSC Software said that Volvo Group is using its Actran acoustic simulation software to reduce cabin noise in its trucks. FInancial impact of the win was not announced. EDF Renewable Energy Buys Big Texas Wind Project ---- San Diego-based EDF Renewable Energy said Monday that it has acquired a large, 200 megawatt wind project in Texas. EDF Renewable Energy did not disclose financial details of the deal, but said it is acquiring the Longhorn Wind Project from Renewable Energy Systems Americas. The wind farm is being built on 14,000 acres near Lubbock, Texas. Greentoe Raises $500,000 For Name-Your-Own Price Marketplace ---- Los Angeles-based Greentoe, a startup developing an e-commerce marketplace which lets people set their own price on appliances, photo equipment, home theater, baby products, music, and more, has raised $500,000 in angel funding. Names of the investors in the company were not announced. According to founder Joe Marrapodi, the company believes it wil lbe on a $3M a year run rate by December. Greentoe's site lets users make an offer for a large list of items, and notifies retailers of what its users will pay for an item--sort of a Priceline for consumer goods. The company first landed an initial angel funding back in May. http://www.socaltech.com/intelligence/?action=showdeal&id=53004 Viddy Relaunches As Supernova ---- Venice-based Viddy, the developer of social video sharing apps, said today that it has rebranded itself as Supernova, and has expanded into a new set of mobile apps. The startup--which went through a huge rollercoaster ride earlier this year--is launching two new online apps, Clique, and EPIC. Clique is a mobile app for sharing thigns anonymously with your friends, and EPIC is a slow motion video sharing app. The company is backed by Battery Ventures, Greycroft Partners, Qualcomm Ventures, New Enterprise Associates, Goldman Sachs, and Khosla Ventures. DriveCam Rebrands Itself Lytx ---- San Diego-based DriveCam has renamed itself as Lytx, as the company said it has evolved the company and vision beyond just devices. The company said that expansion includes a new compliance service, which helps fleets comply with safety regulations, in addition to the company's devices used to monitor driver behavior and safety. Lytx is led by Brandon Nixon. Lytx said it now has more than 250 employees, most of then in San Diego. DriveCa is backed by Chopra Ventures, Insight Venture Partners, Integral Capital Partners, JMI Equity, Leader Ventures, Menlo Ventures, Tech Coast Angels, Triangle Peak Partners, Volvo Group, and Welsh, Carson, Anderson & Stowe. Xencor Sets IPO Pricing Range ---- Monrovia, California-based Xencor, the biopharmaceuticals technology developer headed by Bassil Dahiyat, has set its IPO pricing range, saying today in a regulatory filing that it is expecting to price its IPO at between $14.00 and $16.00 per share. The company is looking to trade as XNCR on the NASDAQ Global Market. Xencor had filed for an IPO in October. Xencor is backed by MedImmune Ventures, HealthCare Ventures, and John R. Stafford, III. AutoGenomics Withdraws IPO ---- Vista-based AutoGenomics, a startup developing molecular diagnostics systems, said Friday in a filing that it is withdrawing its IPO. The company did not give any reason for the withdrawal of its offering. The firm had originally filed for an IPO in September of last year. The company had been targeting a listing on the Nasdaq as AGMX. Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator Gets $200,000 Grant, Eyes Investment Fund ---- The incubator effort looking to make Los Angeles a key part of the clean technology industry, the Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator (LACI), announced this morning that it has received a $200,000 grant from the JPMorgan Chase Foundation, to help advance its program--and may even start its own investment fund. The incubator said the grant will help fund programs focused on advancing sustainable technology development and adoption in the Los Angeles region. The incubator--which launched in 2011>--said it has now incubated 25 companies here, who have collectively received $24M in investments.
