The company was co-founded by Dave Vronay (CEO) and Ruben Kleinman (CTO), who previously spent time at Netflix developing that company's movie classification and matching system. Heard said that its software revolves around "badges" earned for verified facts about users such as where they work, industry expertise or association memberships, and allows users to remain completely anonymous if they wish. Heard is implementing many techniques reminiscent of Netflix's content recommendations engine into social data and community. http://www.socaltech.com/heard_takes_on_social_sharing_networking/s-0057005.html Colorescience Gets $15M ---- Carslbad-based Colorescience, a developer of premium makeup, suncare, and skincare products, said this week that it has raised $15M in a funding round. The Series B funding was led by Longwood Fund, and also included the company's existing investors. The company said $7.5M of that round came from its existing investors, whic include Hale BioPharma Ventures, Split Rock Partners, Merritt Capital Corporation, HealthCare Ventures, Montreux, Domain Associates, and others. Colorescience said the stock offering came at $1.14 per share, a 20 percent increase from its last round. Rich Aldrich of Longwood Fund joins the company's board with the funding. http://www.socaltech.com/intelligence/index.php?action=showdeal&id=59883 Cynvenio Biosystems Scores Insurance Reimbursement Win ---- Westlake Village-based Cynvenio Biosystems said this week that it has scored a big win for its genomic testing products, with the company's ClearID Breast Cancer test now reimburseable under most health insurance plans. Cynvenio said its cancer therapy blood test is being accepted by Aetna, UnitedHealth Group, Cigna, Assurant, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Humana, Kaiser Permanente and others. Cynvenio's test uses a blood test and DNA sequencing to monitor patient response to cancer treatment, and is an alternative to more invasive tissue biopsies. Cynvenio is led by Andre de Fusco. Gem Gets $2M For Bitcoin API ---- Venice, California-based Bitcoin startup Gem has raised $2M, to make Bitcoin easier to use for developers, the company said this week. ShuttleRock also said that it has named former ValueClick CEO James R. Zarley as its chairman of its board. The funding came from such investors as Japanese digital advertising agency Opt, ICE Angels, and angels Gary McCormick and Yoshihiro Kawamura. The company said this new round of funding will go towards expanding the company's presence in North America.
