IAC's Match Group--which also runs Match, OkCubid, and Meetic, in addition to Tinder--said the buy will help it expand its family of produccts. PlentyOfFish was led by Markus Frind; the deal is subject to approval by Canadian authorities. http://www.socaltech.com/plentyoffish_joins_tinder_at_iac_s_match_group_after__7_m_buy/s-0061008.html Sonos Updates Software ---- Santa Barbara-based whole home music system manufacturer Sonos said Monday that it has rolled out a nuber of minor updates to its streaming music systems. According to Sonos, the updates include visual indications when users have shuffled their playlists; ability to connect into Google Play Music's curated radio stations; and updates to TuneIn, which streams traditional radio stations from across the globe. Sonos said the updates had rolled out earlier to beta users, and are now available to all users. http://blog.sonos.com/news/and-the-listening-is-easy/ VIZIO Licenses Technology From Dolby, Rovi ---- Irvine-based consumer electronics maker VIZIO has renewed two patent and technology licensing deals it has with Dolby and Rovi Corporation. The two, separate agreements and announcements, cover use of technology in VIZIO's line of products. No financial details of the licenses were announced. In the Dobly deal, Dolby said that VIZIO has licensed its Dolby AC-4 standard for use in televisions for next generation broadcast systems and streaming Internet content. In the Rovi patent deal, Rovi said that Rovi and VIZIO had renewed a multi-year patent license to extend use of Rovi's patent portfolio in its products. aTyr Pharma Loses COO ---- San Diego-based aTyr Pharma, which is developing treatments for rare diseases, said late Monday that its President and Chief Operating Officer, Frederic Chereau, has resigned. In a tersely worded statement, aTyr said that Chereau has left to "pursue other opportunities". CardiAQ Acquired By Edwards Lifesciences For $400M ---- Irvine-based CardiAQ has agreed to be acquired by Edwards Lifesciences, in a deal worth up to $400M, the two companies said Monday. Edwards Lifesciences said it would pay $350M in cash plus up to $50M in earnout for CardiAQ, which was venture backed by Advent Venture Partners, OrbiMed Advisors and Versant Ventures. CardiAQ develops transcatheter mitral valve replacement systems, used for heart surgery. Edwards Lifesciences is also based in Irvine. GrollTex Gets Seed Funding ---- San Diego-based GrollTex, a new startup spinning out of the University of California, San Diego, has scored a seed funding round. The funding came from The Triton Fund and the Tech Coast Angels. Size of the funding was not disclosed. According to The Triton Fund, GrollTex will use the funding to accelerate commercialization of the company's technology. GrollTex's technology is based on mass producing graphene, which is a material being aimed at use in such things as water desalination membranes and flexible electronics. GrollTex was founded by UCSD graduate student Aliaksandr (Alex) Zaretski (pictured), who won the UC San Diego Entrepreneurship Challenge with the technology.
