According to the WSJ, Hulu is exploring adding thew new premium service at between $12.00 and $14.00 per month, allowing users to get an ad-free viewing experience--to help it better compete with Netflix. Hulu has not officially announced any plans for the service. Currently, even premium subscribers on Hulu--who get access to a much wider list of shows and content--must sit through ads. http://www.socaltech.com/hulu_planning_ad_free_premium_subscription/s-0061083.html Uber, Lyft Get Approval For LAX Access ---- Ridesharing services Uber and Lyft may soon be able to pick up passengers at LAX, after officials voted to open up access to the airport to the third party services. Uber and Lyft--which have extensive service in Los Angeles--have been unable to pick up passengers at the airport, due to tight restrictions by the city on access to the airport. Stocktwits Adds Real Time Notifications ---- San Diego- and New York-based StockTwits has rolled out a way for mobile users to get selected, real-time notifications when people they follow post messages. According to Stocktwits CEO Howard Lindzon, the new feature lets users easily pick the few people they'd like to get real time notifications from, and have the posts of those few people show up in your mobile notifications. The new feature prevents every post by anyone you follow from showing up as an alert, only triggering alerts on specific users. Stocktwits operates a Twitter-like, micro messaging service specifically geared at stock trading and investment. Yardi Gets Win In Singapore ---- Santa Barbara-based property management software developer Yardia>> has been selected by a Singapore-based, real estate investment trust, the companies said late Thursday. According to IREIT Global Group Pte. Ltd., it has selected Yardi's Voyager software-as-a-service platform to help it manage its office properties. IREIT said the software will be used for both daily operations and long term investment decisions. Financial impact of the deal was not disclosed. Fandango's Movieclips Ties With YouTube Space For New Content ---- Los Angeles-based Fandango said Thursday that its YouTube channel, Fandango Movieclips, is in a deal with YouTube Space LA, to create new, movie-themed original video content at the production space. Fandango said it has been selected for the YouTube Space LA residency program, and will have extensive use of its production facilities to experiment with new formats and innovate new types of content. The deal includes the launch of a new, weekly series called Movie3Some, which will feature interviews and guests of hosts Tiffany Smith and Kristian Harloff, including the NBA's Dwight Howard, filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro, and many others. Yeti Acquired By Jim Armstrong, New Investors ---- Santa Monica-based Yeti, the local discovery and travel app developer led by Alex Capecelatro, has been acquired by a group of private investors, the company said Thursday morning. Financial details of the acquisition were not announced. Yeti said the investors include Jim Armstrong of March Capital Partners. Yeti--which was last known as At The Pool, and got its start as Hyphos--will now be headed by Andy Mazzarella. Yeti's mobile app allowed users to discover cool things to do and see in nearby locations, as recommended by other users. http://www.socaltech.com/yeti_acquired_by_jim_armstrong_new_investors/s-0061074.html Oculus VR Buys Pebbles ---- Virtual reality headset maker Oculus--which is owned by Facebook, and was until recently headquartered in Irvine--has acquired Pebbles Ltd., a developer of gesture recognition technology. Financial terms of the buy have not been disclosed, however, reports place the acquisition at around $60M. Oculus said on its blog that Pebbles will help the company to advance virtual reality, tracking, and human-computer interactions. Pebbles was based in Israel, and develops systems which custom optics, sensor systems and algorithms to detect and track hand movement. Readz Launches Mobile Marketing Tools, Backed by $7.15M ---- Woodland Hills-based Readz, a new startup that is aiming to help marketers quickly create microsites, landing pages, white papers, and other content, said Thursday that it has raised more than $7.15M in funding, and launched its products. The company said the funding actually came over the last few years, with backing from such investors as Parana Management Corp. Readz is led by Bart De Pelsmaeker. The company says it first raised funding in 2011, and has been operating in stealth mode.
