NASA announced the contract award on Tuesday, saying that the contract will support both research on the International Space Station and the agency's efforts to deliver humans to Mars. Wyle will provide services at NASA's Johnson Labs, as well as White Sands. Those services cover everything from biomedical research and space medicine to managing space food and experimental labs, plus payload and hardware integration, among many other areas of coverage. http://www.socaltech.com/nasa_awards_wyle_laboratories_with___44_billion_mars_mission_contract/s-0061243.html mTAB Acquired By Poplar Partners ---- Yorba Linda-based Productive Access, Inc., the makers of the mTAB survey analysis tool, has been acquired by investment firm Poplar Capital Partners. Financial details of the acquisition were not disclosed. The companies said they have formed a new entity, mTAB LLC, which will combine investment capital from Poplar and the technology from Product Access Inc. Alex Gelman has been named CEO of mTAB as part of the acquisition. Productive Access Inc. had been founded by John Doyle and Brad Hontz in 1986. Doyle and Hontz had run the company since 1986, and will remain as advisors. Rubicon Project Sees Healthy Growth In Q2 ---- Los Angeles-based online advertising automation technology developer Rubicon Project reported some healthy growth in its second quarter. Rubicon said Tuesday afternoon that it had $53.0M in revenues, an 88 percent increase from the second quarter of 2014, when it had revenues of $28.3M. Rubicon said the growth in revenues game both from organic growth, and strategic acquisitions. Rubicon predicted revenues of between $63.0M and $65.0M in Q3 of 2015, with full 2015 revenues of between $246M to $250M. Rubicon trades publicly on the NYSE as RUBI. TeleSign Rolls Out New SDK ---- Los Angeles-based TeleSign, which provides two-factor phone- and mobile-based identity verification systems for many major Internet services, has rolled out a new software development kit (SDK). TeleSign said its TeleSign Auto Verify SDK helps mobile app developers streamline the account verification process, without the need for one time passcodes. TeleSign said the SDK is aimed at social, gaming, dating, Over-The-Top (OTT) and mobile commerce apps. The new SDK runs on Android phones. TeleSign is led by Steve Jillings. Cytori Names VP ---- San Diego-based biopharmaceuticals developer Cytori Therapeutics said this morning that it has named Jeremy Hayden as the company's General Counsel and VP of Business Development. Hayden was most recently at Volcano Corporation, where he was Assistant General Counsel. He also had served at McKenna Long & Aldridge, LLP and Mintz Levin Cohn Ferris Glovsky & Popeo, P.C. Cytori is developing autologous cell therapies from adipose tissue to treat a variety of medical conditions. Qualcomm In Patent License Deal On EV Charging ---- San Diego-based Qualcomm said today that it has inked a new patent license agreement with BRUSA, an automotive power electronics supplier. Qualcomm said the patent license covers its Wireless Electric Vehicle Charging (WEVC) technology, and allows BRUSA to commercialize WEVC systems for Plug-In Hybrid and Electric Vehicles. Financial details of the patent license were not annouced, however, Qualcomm said the royalty-bearing patent license lets BRUSA develop, make and supply WEVC systems for certain automobile manufacturers. HelloTech Launches Service To Wean Your Parents Off Your Tech Support ---- Tired of being the tech support person for your parents? Los Angeles-based HelloTech.com, a provider of in-home technical support and sales help, said Tuesday that it has launched a brand new site to help people purchase home technology services and products for their parents. The new site, BuyYourParents.com, is aimed at adult children and caregivers with "Boomer" parents, offloading the training and support needed to help get technology products installed. HelloTech--led by technology veteran Richard Wolpert--uses vetted and trained college students as technicians to help the older generation with their technology issues and installation. The startup--led by Kai Beuhler--says it has a partnership with loyalty and reward clubs, brands and retailers, so that users can earn, buy and receive points for making positive changes in the world. The service also has relationships with charity:water, the American Red Cross and Food for the Poor. Stoddard joins the company from Martindale-Hubbell, and also had served at US Search. He also has served at CNET. Stoddard replaces Russ Reeder, who left Media Temple earlier this year to become a CEO of iCitizen, a startup that is looking to help connect citizens with government. Media Temple said that Stoddard was raised in Silicon Valley, and is a Los Angeles technology veteran. Virgin Galactic Accident Due to Premature Feathering, Says NTSB ---- The National Transportation Safety Board says that the fatal accident of a test flight of Virgin Galactic's SpaceShipTwo vehicle in October of 2014, was due to premature feathering of the vehicle's braking system. The crash--which occured on October 31, 2014--resulted in the death of the co-pilot and serious injuries of the pilot, and destroyed the SpaceShipTwo. The feathering system in the SpaceShipTwo is used to slow down the vehicle for re-entry into the atmosphere. According to the lead investigator in the case, Lorenda Ward, co-pilot Michael Alsbury prematurely unlocked the feathering system, while the vehicle was going over Mach 1.4 -- which resulted in structural failure of the SpaceShipTwo while in flight. http://www.socaltech.com/virgin_galactic_accident_due_to_premature_feathering_says_ntsb/s-0061226.html Kareo Adds $55M In Funding ---- Irvine-based Kareo, the developer of cloud-based software used to manage medical practices, said Tuesday morning that it has raised $55.4M in a new funding round. The funding was led by Montreux Equity Partners, and also included Silver Lake Waterman and the company's existing investors. Kareo, which is led by Dan Rodrigues, offers up cloud-based software used by small and other independent medical practices to manage all of their billing and operations.
