NantOmics Buys OncoPlex Diagnostics
----
Los Angeles-based molecular diagnostics company NantOmics, which is
one of the group of companies owned by biotech billionaire Patrick
Soon Shiong, said Thursday that it has acquired OncoPlex Diagnostics,
which is an accredited clinical laboratory focused on testing tumor
cell proteins using mass spectrometry analysis.  Financial termsd of
the acquisition were not disclosed. NantWorks, the umbrella company
for Soon Shiong's many ventures, already held a stack in OncoPlex,
having first invested in the company in 2008.  OncoPlex Diagnostics is
absed in Rockville, Maryland, and provides services which helps with
profiling the tumors of cancer patients. NantOmics is using molecular
profiling to help doctors better treat cancer patients.

Qualcomm Targets Consumer Drone Market With New Platform

San Diego-based Qualcomm has launched a new reference platform,
specifically aimed at helping designers incorporate its chips into
drone aircraft, the company said Thursday. (More...)

Orexigen Gets $60M In Private Placement
----
San Diego-based Orexigen Therapeutics, the publicly held biotech
developer, said Thursday that it has raised $60M in a private
placement. The funding came from The Baupost Group, LLC. Orexigenn
Therapeutics said the new funding will go towards strengthening its
balance sheet, ahead of commercial launch of its products. Orexigen
said The Baupost Group purchased 5 million shares of its common stock
at $3 per share, plus 0.25 of a warrant, which are exercisable for
five years at $6 per share.

Iteris Signs Deal with Valent USA
----
Santa Ana-based transportation and agriculture information provider
Iteris reported this week that it is in a deal with Valent U.S.A., to
provide field-level weather, soil content, and crop protection via an
API. According to Iteris, Valent is tapping into its ClearAg
application programming interface, professional services, and more.
Financial details of the deal were not disclosed. Valent provides
products for agricultural crop protection and improviing crop yields,
including herbicides, insecticides, fungicides and plant growth
regulators.

Google Fiber Might Be Coming To Irvine, San Diego
----
Looking for some super fast Internet? Google said Thursday that it is
exploring extending its ultra-fast, gigabit Internet service to both
Irvine and San Diego--two of three cities Google says it is now
working with on the service. Google said the two, Southern California
cities--plus Louisville, Kentucky--are just starting a "joint planning
process" with the company on bringing the ultra-fast fiber
connectivity to their cities. Google said that it is only "exploring
the possibility" of the service in Irvine and San Diego, and is now
working to conduct a study on topography, housing density, and the
condition of existing infrastructure--before deciding whether or not
to deploy its network in those cities.

Fliptu Becomes Ampsy, Signs Up Darius Rucker As A Customer

Los Angeles-based social aggregation tool developer Fliptu said today
that it has rebranded the company as Ampsy, and also integrated its
software with Hootsuite. The reasoning behind the rebranding was not
given. As part of the announcement, Ampsy said that its product has
been being used by musical artist Darius Rucker, who has been using
Ampsy's product with Hootsuite during his performances. Ampsy said
that Rucker has been using Ampsy to find "super fans", and giving
those influencers shout outs, special offers, and more, and also to
help enhance the buzz from Rucker's concerts; the company said the
result was social engagement that went out three to five days longer
than usual after those concerts.

Upfront Ventures In New Funding For thredUP
----
Los Angeles-based venture capital investor Upfront Ventures ‭is one of
the participants in a new funding for online used clothing marketplace
thredUP, which announced a big $81M funding today. thredUP said this
morning that the $81M, Series E funding was led by Goldman Sachs
Investment Partners (GSIP). The funding also included prior investors
Trinity Ventures, Redpoint Ventures, Highland Capital Partners and
Upfront Ventures. The new round brings thredUP's total funding to
$125M. The funding reportedly values thredUP at around $500M.
Upfront's investment in thredUP comes thanks to Greg Bettinelli, who
is a personal investor in thredUP, in addition to being a Partner at
Upfront Ventures. thredUP is based in San Francisco.
