Los Angeles-based iPATROL has just rolled out a new, Wi-Fi enabled, roving robot called Riley, which lets homeowners see real time, high definition video from the robot from their iOS or Android phone, from anywhere in the world. The diminutive--and some could even say, cute--robot rolls around on offroad capable tracks, and has a motion-sensor activated camera, and build in microphone and speakers. iPatrol said its robot can be used to alert homeowners when motion is detected around the home, or can even be used as a pet companion and to interact with family members. iPATROL is led by Rodney Lo. http://www.socaltech.com/la_company_rolls_out_your_own_wandering_wi_fi_connected_security_robot/s-0066454.html SilVR Thread, Lionsgate Roll Out New VR Title ---- Los Angeles-based virtual reality developer SilVR Thread, and Lionsgate said today that they have rolled out a new, virtual reality title, in tandem with Lionsgate's new suspense thriller NERVE. According to the firms, they have rolled out a new, first person, virtual reality experience which lets users experience several "dares" from the film. The VR experience runs on Samsung Gear VR and Google Cardboard, and is available on the Oculus store, Android Marketplace and Apple iTunes. The companies said the experience was shot with SilVR Thread's VR cameras and platform. http://www.socaltech.com/silvr_thread_lionsgate_roll_out_new_vr_title/s-0066452.html Esri Wins Customer In Michigan ---- Redland-based GIS and mapping software maker Esri has scored a win with the state of Michigan, saying on Thursday that the Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget (DTMB) has selected the company to host 25 terabytes of data for the orthophotography and LiDAR data for the state. Financial details of the win were not disclosed. Esri said that data is used for more than 60 statewide mapping datasets built on its ArcGIS platform. Esri's ArcGIS platform is widely used in the government and corporate sector for geographical information systems applications. Illumina Names Apple VP To Board ---- San Diego-based life sciences equipment maker Illumina has added Apple's Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing, Philip W. Schiller, to the company's board of directors, the company said on Thursday. Illumina said that Schiller is part of Apple's team that runs product marketing, developer relations, business marketing, education marketing, international marketing and App Store programs. He has been at Apple for over 25 years, and also served at Macromedia, FirePower Systems, Nolan, Nortan & Company, and Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Illumina is a developer of DNA sequencing equipment. HyperLoop One Opens Manufacturing Plant In Las Vegas ---- Los Angeles-based HyperLoop One, the HyperLoop transportation development company which is currently embroiled in a messy lawsuit between its founders, said earlier this week that it has opened up its first manufacturing plant, in North Las Vegas. The company said its Hyperloop One Metalworks is a 105,000 square foot tooling and fabrication plant, and will include space for engineers, machinists and welders to test its prototype systems. The company said it set up the manufacturing plant in Las Vegas, as a result of efforts of State and local officials in Nevada. cloudvirga Finds $7.5M For Mortgage Automation ---- Irvine-based cloudvirga, a startup developing mortgage automation tools, announced Thursday that it has raised $7.5M in a Series A funding. The funding was led by Dallas Capital, and also included Upfront Ventures and Tribeca Angels. The startup, led by Bill Dallas, says it digitizes many of the steps needed to close mortgage loans. Kelsey was previously CFO of Elevance Renewable Sciences, and also served at Sealed Air, General Electric, and GE Capital. He also serves on the board of Granite Construction. Verdezyne is venture backed by BP Ventures, DSM Venturing B.V., OVP Venture Partners, Monitor Ventures, and Sime Darby.
