The new funding round was led by KKR. According to AcuFocus, the new funding will go towards accelerating its commercialization plans, and for research and development projects. AcuFocus makes implantable, corneal lenses used to treat presbyopia--or near sightedness--as well as cataracts. http://www.socaltech.com/intelligence/?action=showdeal&id=77361 OSI Systems Buys American Science and Engineering For $269M ---- Hawthorne-based OSI Systems, the developer of X-ray and other screening equipment for the homeland security, defense, aerospace, and healthcare industries, has acquired American Science and Engineering, Inc., in a deal worth $269M. OSI Systems said it paid $37.00 per share in cash and assumed unvested equity for American Science and Engineering. OSI said it gains additional, X-ray backscatter based inspection systems through the acquisition, which had been announced earlier. OSI Systems is led by Deepak Chopra. Qualcomm Expands in Shanghai ---- San Diego-based Qualcomm announced this morning that it has opened up a new, semiconductor test facility in Shanghai, China, as part of its first foray into providing manufacturing services for semiconductors. According to Qualcomm, its new company, Qualcomm Communications Technologies (Shanghai) Co. Ltd. is being formed in conjunction with Amkor Technology, and will offer up semiconductor manufacturing, product engineering, and development. The new facility will start operating on October 18th. Qualcomm did not say how much it is investing in the new semiconductor test facility. ZYXEL Shifts Focus To Channel Sales ---- Anaheim-based broadband networking, Wi-Fi, Internet access, DSL gateway, and connected home electronics manufacturer Zyxel announced this morning that it has shifted its company and brand to fucos specifically on the channel. According to Zyxel, it is in a complete re-brand which shifts it away from product sales towards channel partners and service providers. The company says it is now "Your Networking Ally", providing solutions, not just products, in the networking area. The update also includes a new logo and website. The company is led by Gordon Yang. MaxLinear Gets Satellite Receiver Design Win ---- Carlsbad-based MaxLinear, which develops radio frequency (RF) and mixed signal, integrated circuits, has scored a design win with a satellite receiver developer. MaxLinear said its products are being used by the Unitron Group, for a new satellite receiver, used for receiving signals from up to four satellite bands and multicasting up to 32 channels on an IP network. Unitron is using MaxLinear's MXL584 FSC full spectrum capture (FSC) receiver as part of its product. Financial impact of the deal and expected shipping volumes that will result fro the deal were not announced. Obalon Therapeutics Files For IPO ---- Carlsbad-based Obalon Therapeutics has filed for an IPO, saying Friday morning that it is looking to raised $75.0M in an IPO on the NASDAQ Global Market. The company has applied to list as OBLN. The company's IPO is being underwritten by UBS Investment Bank, Canaccord Genuity, Stifel, and BTIG. The company is venture backed by Domain Partners, InterWest Partners, Bader SUltan & Bros, and Okapi Venture Capital.
