We spoke earlier with Cody Simms, Executive Director of Techstars America and who leads the program in LA, to hear more about why the startup accelerator operator is opening up its third accelerator here, why Los Angeles has turned out to be one of the leading sources for startups across its network, as well as Cody's advice to entrepreneurs. The new startup accelerator, which will be horizontally focused on all types of companies, is currently being organized by Cody Simms, who is in the midst of hiring a Executive Director for the LA program. Simms said that Techstars is "tripling down" on startup accelerators in Los Angeles, on top of the just announced Techstars Music accelerator, as well as an existing accelerator program, Techstars Healthcare, which is run in partnership with Cedars-Sinai. The accelerator will accept tech startups from around the world. Applications for the new program will open in January, and the first program will run in July of 2017. Qualcomm Acquiring NXP For $47 Billion ---- San Diego-based Qualcomm and NXP Semiconductors N.V. announced this morning that Qualcomm has agreed to buy NXP Semiconductors for $47 billion. The two said Qualcomm will pay $110.00 per share in cash for NXP, in a deal which has already been unanimously approved by the boards of both companies. NXP is a develops of mixed signal semiconductors. The two have been hasing out a deal since at least September. The two said the combined company is expected to have annual revenues of more than $30 billion. Vessel Acquired by Verizon, Will Shut Down ---- Vessel, the subscription video streaming service led by former Hulu CEO Jason Kilar and CTO Richard Tom, has been acquired by Verizon, Vessel said on Wednesday. Financial terms of the acquisition were not announced. As part of the acquisition, Vessel said it will be shutting down the Vessel service on October 31st. In the announcement of the deal, Kilar and Tom said that the "heart of the transaction" is Vessel's technology, which will be incorporated into Verizon's efforts in online video. Vessel had raised more than $130M in funding from such investors as Benchmark Capital, Greylock Partners, and Bezos Expeditions. http://www.socaltech.com/vessel_acquired_by_verizon_will_shut_down/s-0067790.html Global Eagle Entertainment, Intelsat In Satellite Access Deal ---- Marina Del Rey-based Global Eagle Entertainment, the provider of in-flight, broadband Internet services, has signed a deal with satellite network operator Intelsat S.A., the two said late Wednesday. The companies said they are in a new contract to use ten of Intelsat's satellites to provide Global Eagle with high-speed broadband connectivity. Financial details of the deal were not announced. The companies said Global Eagle Entertainment's service will use C- and Ku-band services on eight satellites, plus IntelSat's new EpicNG satellites, Intelsat 33e and Intelsat 35e. The deal brings the total number of Intelsat satellites under contract to Global Eagle Entertainment to 17. HyperX Sponsors eSports Team Run By Boston Celtics' Jerebko ---- Fountain Valley-based HyperX, the division of memory maker Kingston Technology which focuses on the video game market, said it has linked up with Boston Celtics basketball player Jonas Jerebko. Jerebko runs the eSports team the Detroit Renegades. HyperX will sponsor Jerebko's eSports team. Financial terms of the sponsorship deal were not announced. HyperX said the sponsorship is not the first, traditional sport celebrity team it supports: the company also sponsors eSports teams featuring Gordon Hayward, Utah Jazz forward, and another featuring Rick Fox, former LA Laker. The company sponsors over 30 eSports teams. Ingenu Deploys In Columbus, Ohio ---- San Diego-based Internet-of-Things networking technology developer Ingenu says it has deployed another machine-to-machine (M2M) network, this time in Columbus, Ohio. Ingenu said its network reaches nearly 500 square miles, serving a population of 1.1 million. Ingenu's network is aimed at the city's "smart city" efforts. Report: Snapchat Looking To Raise $4 Billion In IPO ---- Venice-based Snapchat is hoping to launch an IPO which will raise the company an astounding $4 billion in capital--valuing the company at between $25 billion and $35 billion--according to a report on Wednesday from Bloomberg. The report cites "people familiar with the matter" for the information. Snapchat is in the midst of an IPO effort being led by Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs Group. The latest IPO big tech IPO of that size was for Facebook, which raised $16 billion in its IPO back in 2012.
