The startup offers up the ability to rent a wide range of "experiences"--all the stuff you need for a backyard movie night, virtual reality gear, electric scooters, and more--so you don't have to own a bunch of things you only use once. The startup said that the store will be open throughout the month of December, and that anyone who visits the store will be able to purchase a membership and get a free, rental experience. The company's membership has been invite-only, and visitors to the store are the first who will get a chance to join. http://www.socaltech.com/joymode_s_pop_up_store_launches_today/s-0068313.html The Mobile Majority Buys Qualcomm Spinoff Gimbal ---- Santa Monica-based The Mobile Majority, the mobile advertising technology developer led by Rob Emrich, says it has acquired Gimbal, the Qualcomm spinout focused on mobile engagement and location intelligence in the retail market. Financial details of the acquisition were not announced. Gimbal's technology was used by brands, retailers, advertisers, venues, and out-of-home (OOH) networks to understand the movement of their customers. Gimbal was spun out of Qualcomm in 2014, and had started as a project within Qualcomm in 2010. Illumina Names New CFO ---- San Diego-based DNA sequencing equipment maker Illumina announced this morning that it has named Sam A. Samad as its new Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. Samad was most recently at Cardinal health, where he was most recently Senior Vice President and Corporate Treasurer. He also has served at Eli Lilly and PepsiCo Inc. AeroVironment Selected By General Motors For New Bolt EV Charging ---- Monrovia, California-based AeroVironment, which develops both unmanned aerial vehicles and electric vehicle charging stations, has scored a win with General Motors. The company said on Tuesday afternoon that its EVSE-RS charging station has been selected as the official home charging station for GM's new 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV. The company says its charger charges the EV up to 5 times faster than a standard cordset for the vehicle. As a result of the selection, those EVSE-RS charging stations get their own GM part number, and will be available through Chevrolet dealerships. GM is rolling out the new Chevrolet Bolt EV in California and Oregon this year, according to General Motors and AeroVironment. Harman Backs Heads Up Display Maker Navdy ---- Automotive audio and entertainment systems maker Harman, which has a significant number of its businesses in Southern California, has made a strategic investment in Navdy, a developer of after-market, heads-up and augmented reality devices for the automotive market. Size of the investment was not announced.
