The conference is run by Jamie Montgomery, one of the local industry's pioneers in venture capital and investment. We sat down with Jamie—who has been part of LA's technology industry, either as an investor or advisor since its very early days--to get his perspective on where we are today, especially as it relates to all of the companies he's worked with over the years on a more global stage and in Silicon Valley, and his advice to entrepreneurs. Jamie is currently also co-founder of March Capital Partners, in addition to running the summit. (More...) http://www.socaltech.com/a_chat_with_jamie_montgomery_on_how_la_s_tech_ecosystem_has_grown/s-0069383.html Report: Snap Working On Drone Technology ---- First, sunglasses. Next, a selfie drone? A report in the New York Times on Tuesday says that Snap has been working on drone technology, to take overhead videos and photographs of its users. The NYT cited "three people briefed on the project" in its report, which comes on the eve of pricing on Snap's IPO. Snap, in its IPO filing, now calls itself a "camera company". The company rolled out its Snap Spectacles last year to let users record video clips and post them to Snapchat. http://www.socaltech.com/report_snap_working_on_drone_technology/s-0069388.html Hyperloop One Eyes India ---- Los Angeles-based Hyperloop One, the Hyperloop developer led by Rob Lloyd and Shervin Pishevar, is lobbying for deployment of its technology in India, in a widely publicized meeting with Indian transportation officials on Tuesday. The Hyperloop One "Vision For India" event claimed its technology could be used to "reinvent and transform transportation in India", by connecting its cities faster than air travel. India's rail systems are notoriously overloaded and crowded, with many photos of passengers packed onto, and on top of crowded rail lines. http://www.socaltech.com/hyperloop_one_eyes_india/s-0069389.html Chrome River Wins Coca-Cola HBC ---- Los Angeles-based Chrome River, which develops expense management and supplier invoice management software, said today that it has signed up Coca-Cola HBC, AG, the largest bottler of The Coca-Cola Company, as a customer. According to Chrome River, its software will be used for global expense management across more than 25 countries. Financial impact of the win was not announced. Chrome River said Coca-Cola HBC has more than 33,000 employees and revenues in excess of 6 billion euros. Chrome River's software will be used to allow Coca-Cola HBC's teams to submit expenses on mobile and desktop devices. Iteris Expands Board ---- Santa Ana-based Iteris, which develops software used in transportation management, specifically for the agriculture market, said on Tuesday afternoon that it has named Scott Deeter to its board of directors. Deeter is the President and CEO of Ventria, a company commercializing recombinant proteins from plants. Deeter also previously served at CyberCrop, ran and led a joint venture between Cargill and F. Hoffmann-La Roche, and also had been at Salomon Brothers. Iteris--which looks to have undergone some major branding changes in recent months-- says it provides "applied informatics for transportation and agriculture, turning big data into big breakthrough solutions." SimpliPhi Power Rolls Out Residential Energy Storage Product ---- Ojai-based SimpliPhi Power, along with solar equipment distributor CivicSolar, announced today that SimpliPhi has rolled out a new, energy storage solution aimed at the residential solar market. According to the two, AccESS is an all-in-one, energy storage system aimed for use in the Self Generation Incentive Program (SGIP) in California. SimpliPhi's system is based on lithium ferrous phosphate batteries, which SimpliPhi says avoids the potential thermal runaway issues behind cobalt-based lithium batteries. SimpliPhi is led by CEO Catherine Von Burg. Aerie Pharmaceuticals Resubmits NDA ---- Irvine-based pharmaceuticals developer Aerie Pharmaceuticals said today that it has resubmitted an NDA (New Drug Application) for its Rhopressa (netarsudil ophthalmic solution) for treating glaucoma, to the FDA. The company said its earlier submission had been withdrawn in October of 2016, due to issues with its contract drug product manufacturer. Aerie said that its vendor's Tampa, Florida facility is now ready for pre-approval inspection by the FDA, the issue which had caused it to withdraw its application earlier for approval and review. The company is now targeting the second quarter of 2018 to launch its product. YouTube Launches Subscription TV Service, YouTube TV ---- YouTube announced a new live TV streaming effort called YouTube TV this morning, at a big event at YouTube Space LA in Playa Vista, which was streamed to YouTube's offices in San Francisco and New York. According to YouTube, the new, live experience will feature live TV streaming from ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, ESPN, regional sports networks and dozens of popular cable networks, a "cloud DVR" service with no storage limits, ability to play video on mobile, tablet, and computer screens, as well as up to six accounts. According to YouTube, the new service will cost $35.00 a month, and initially will only launch in a small number of markets. http://www.socaltech.com/youtube_launches_subscription_tv_service_youtube_tv/s-0069380.html Major Amazon S3 Outage Hits Internet ---- An outage at Amazon Web Services caused major downtime across the cloud Wednesday morning, as sites which rely on the cloud storage service have been unable to reliably connect all morning. Such sites as the U.S. Securities And Exchange Commission, Slack, Quora, and many others, were unavailable since Amazon reported "increased error rates" out of its US-EAST-1 zone. Although Amazon's web services are widely used by Southern California tech startups, it's unclear how many were affected by the downtime. S3 is used by many websites for storing data, images, and video. Double M Partners Raising New Fund ---- Los Angeles-based venture capital fund Double M Partners, which is run by Mark Mullen, is raising a new, $40M venture capital fund, according to a regulatory filing by the firm on Monday. Digital technologies are democratizing the creation and distribution of content causing a seismic shift in the business model for traditional movie and television studios. The business strategy has gone to more vertical integration of companies who have cable, TV, and film arms, as well as theme parks and digital media. Burgeoning technologies like Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) are also emerging as the go-to for the gaming world and other forms of entertainment. Digital Advertising via social media and similar outlets are quickly overtaking companies advertising spend traditionally allocated to television ads and other legacy forms of advertising. This new ad-spend dynamic is also impacting advertising agencies and agency models. All of these changes have a significant impact on the LA County economy and our workforce, and will shape the future of the entertainment industry and how Hollywood functions going forward.
