Vendr Takes On Craigslist With Marketplace App
----
A new, Los Angeles startup, Vendr is taking on Craiglist with an app that
it says will help to allow users to buy and sell items locally without the
fear of being robbed. Vendr said it has created a cashless, local
marketplace app, which lets users reserve a product using their credit
card, keeps that money in escrow, and only release it once a user has
received an item. The startup said it is looking to help users afraid of
"murders, robberies and assaults" which have been documented on local
marketplaces like Craiglist, OfferUp, and other services. Vendr's founder
is Aamir Latif.

Leaf Group Acquires Deny Designs
----
Santa Monica-based Leaf Group, which is led by Sean Moriarty, said on
Thursday that it has acquired home decor brand Deny Designs. Leaf Group
said it paid $2.0M for Deny Designs, split between $6.7M in cash plus
approximately 215,000 shares of its common stock. Deny Designs was based
in Denver, Colorado. Leaf Group disclosed the sale in its first quarter
2017 results, where it reported a net loss of $10.0M on revenues of
$27.238M. Leaf Group was formerly known as Demand Media.

TaskUs Names Sales VP
----
Los Angeles-based TaskUs, which provides business process outsourcing, said
this week that it has named Jarrod Johnson as Senior Vice President of
Sales. Johnson was most recently SVP of Sales, Marketing, and Client
Development at FacilitySource, and also had served at IBM and Xerox.
Johnson will be based in Dallas. TaskUs said the hire comes after a "year
of exponential revenue growth" for the company, which now has a huge
employee base, mostly in the Phillippines. TaskUs has thousands of
employees overseas, having grown to over 7,000 employees as of the end of
2016, but only a fraction of that employee base is in the United States,
and even less of that in Santa Monica.

SafeRide Health Links Into Lyft
----
Santa Monica-based SafeRide Health, a startup which is focused on
transporting patients to health care providers, has linked up with Lyft in
a new partnership, the company said on Thursday. SafeRide--which is venture
backed by Amplify.LA--helps reduce medical appoint "no-shows" by providing
transportation to patients to their medical appointments. The company
pointed out that a $40 Lyft ride can help avoid deterioration in a
patient's condition which would end up costing $20,000 in an end-stage
renal failure visit to the emergency room. The company cited numbers from
the Journal of Community Health, which found that 25 percent of low-income
patient appointments are missed or rescheduled due to a lack of
transportation. SafeRide is led by CEO Robbins Schrader.

Club Pilates Gets Private Equity Investment
----
Los Angeles-based Club Pilates, a franchisor of Pilates studios, has
received a private equity investment from TPG Growth Partners, the two said
on Thursday. Size of the funding round was not announced. Club Pilates is
run by Anthony Geisler, the former owner and CEO of LA Boxing; Geisler
acquired Club Pilates in 2015 from founder Allison Beardsley.

Cornerstone OnDemand Bolsters Board
----
Santa Monica-based Cornerstone OnDemand, which develops cloud-based
employee education and human capital management software, has named Steffan
Tomlinson, CFO for Palo Alto Networks, and Dean Carter, VP of Human
Resource and Shared Services for Patagonia, to its board of directors.
Tomlinson also has served at Aruba Networks and Peribit Networks. Carter
also has served at Sears Holdings Corporation and Fossil. Cornerstone
OnDemand's software is used by human resources departments to onboard
employees, for employee education and training, and related areas.

BIOLASE Loses New CFO In Quick Turnover
----
Irvine-based dental laser manufacturer BIOLASE announced this morning that
its CFO, Mark J. Nelson, has resigned from the company. Nelson has been CFO
of the company for less than two months. According to BIOLASE, Nelson
resigned to pursue an "unsolicited and lucrative business opportunity with
a former employer." The CFO duties have been handed over to VP of Finance
and Corporate Controller Brendan O'Connell.

Voxility Expands In LA
----
Voxility, which allows telcos, data centers, hosting providers, and cloud
services providers rent enterprise hardware and other services, is
expanding in Los Angeles, in a deal with data center provider CoreSite.
Voxility said it is expanding its current presence in the Los Angeles
market, at CoreSite's two data center facilities--one at One Wilshire, and
another 424,000 square feet nearby in downtown. CoreSite says it now has
over 500 network, cloud, and enterprise customers at its Los Angeles campus.

Soylent Stocks Up With $50M More In Funding
----
Los Angeles-based food alternative developer Soylent announced this morning
that it has raised $50M in a Series B funding round, led by GV (formerly
Google Ventures) and also including Tao Capital Partners, Lerer Hippeau
Ventures and Andreessen Horowitz. The company said that GV's Andy Wheeler
joins the company's board with the funding. Soylent, led by Rob Rhinehart,
said the funding will go to expand its current product offerings and
support expansion efforts. Rhinehart says it is developing "healthy,
functional foods", with GV pointing out to the lack of access to "complete,
affordable nutrition". Soylent develops a line of products--powders and
drinks--which can be used in place of eating food.

Share Your Opinions On Drone Technology / CSU Channel Islands Study

Dr. Sean Anderson and his students at California State University Channel
Islands are conducting this survey on behalf of their ESRM 370
undergraduate class and their Aerial and Aquatic Robotic Research (“AARR”)
Laboratory group. We are studying the current use of and attitudes towards
Unmanned Aerial Vehicles. These devices are variously also known as UAV,
Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS), Remotely Piloted Systems (RPS), or simply
“drones.” While the military use of these systems may often be what
people think of when they hear about this technology, we are exploring the
rapidly-expanding, non-military use of systems created by hobbyists,
researchers, and private industry.

We expect to conclude this survey by late April of 2017 and subsequently
post our results by early May to both our blog (https://aarr.piratelab.org)
and our
suite of social media outlets. Please check these sites in early May for
our polling results or feel free to contact us with any questions. Our
contact ([email protected]) and links to our web sites will be
provided again at the end of this survey.
