How Work Today Is Connecting Blue Collar Workers With Jobs, with Joe Nigro

For many, blue collar workers--particularly those who are finding a job on
a day-to-day basis--the right way to reach them isn't an app, but texting.
Santa Monica-based WorkToday (www.worktoday.com) has created a text-based
marketplace to help connect workers with employers. We caught up with CEO
Joe Nigro, the former VP of Growth at HomeHero and General Manager of
Handy, and talk about why he started Work Today and how the service works.
The company recently raised $1.1M in a funding from Mucker Capital, Social
Capital, Hone Capital (formerly CSC Venture Capital), E-Merge, and GAN
Ventures.

What does Work Today do?

Zynga Funds Effort At USC To Support Diversity In Video Game Industry

Social games developer Zynga has funded a new effort to increase the
diversity in the video game development industry, through a partnership

SpaceX Test Fires Falcon Heavy

Hawthorne-based SpaceX has released a video of its first, static fire test
of a Falcon Heavy rocket, which it conducted last week in McGregor, Texas.

NantHealth Names Chief Medical Officer
----
Culver City-based NantHealth announced this morning that it has named
Sandeep (Bobby) Reddy, MD, as its new Chief Medical Officer. Dr. Reddy has
been at NantHealth since December of 2016, when he joined as Senior
Executive Director of Medical Affairs. He was previously Chief Medical
Officer at Caris Life Sciences. Reddy will be overseeing education,
outreach, clinical development programs, and clinical trials for GPS
Cancer, NantHealth's cancer analytics platform. NantHealth is led by
biotech billionaire Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong.

Dassault Systemes Pilots New 3D Design Fellowship At UC Irvine

The Dassault Systemes U.S. Foundation, the nonprofit arm of aerospace giant
Dassault Systemes, said that it is launching a new pilot program this
summer at the University of California, Irvine's Samueli School of
Engineering, which will teach community college students the skills behind

Upfront, Rincon Back Qordoba
----
Two, Los Angeles-based venture capital investors have backed a developer of
machine learning software, Qordoba, in its first investment funding round.
Qordoba said the $5M funding came from Upfront Ventures and Rincon Venture
Partners, with both  Upfront Ventures' Kara Nortman and Rincon's Jim
Andelman joining the company's board. Qordoba's machine learning software
is used by such clients as Sophora, Cartier, Nutanix, and Netskope for
language localization. Qordoba is based in San Francisco.

Miramar Venture Partners Backs eRelevance

Corona del Mar-based Miramar Venture Partners is one of the backers in
marketing automation software developer eRelevance, in a $5.1M funding
round. eRelevance, which is based in Austin, Texas, said the round was led
by Rally Ventures and also included Chicago Ventures, Miramar Venture
Partners, Martin Investment Holdings and Capital Factory.

Dell Technologies Capital Now A Backer Of Cylance
----
Dell Technologies Capital, a new venture investment fund announced at Dell
EMC World on Monday, says it is an investor in Irvine-based Cylance,
according to the fund's new website. Dell Technologies Capital--which will
conduct venture investments for Dell Technologies as well as its other
related businesses--said it will invest $100M annually in startups. The new
venture unit is a combination of the venture investment arms of Dell and
EMC. The previous venture effort of Dell, Dell Ventures, is an investor in
Cylance, and it's likely the listing of Cylance on the new fund's site is a
result of that prior investment, although a number of previously
undisclosed investments by Dell Technologies Capital appeared on Dell
Technologies Capital's portfolio page with the announcement.

Kingston Expands Embedded Efforts
----
Fountain Valley-based flash memory manufacturer Kingston Digital anounced
Tuesday morning that it is expanding its efforts to reach the embedded
solutions market, and has signed up a new manufacturer's representation in
the Midwest. Kingston said it has selected Mel Foster Company as its select
manufacturer's representative in the Midwest region of the United States.
Kingston's embedded storage goes into smartphones and tablets, among other
applications.

AeroVironment Unveils Stealthy, Palm-Sized Drone
----
Monrovia, California-based AeroVironment has unveiled a new, palm-sized
drone today, aimed at the military, called the Snipe. The Snipe--which it
says can be worn on a uniform and is used for close-range intelligence,
surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR)--is an ultra-miniature quadcopter,
and which it says it is already delivering to an un-named, U.S. government
customer. Aerovironment's new Snipe drone only weighs five ounces, and
includes infrared sensors, high-resolution video, and flight speeds in
excess of 20 mph. Aerovironment says the drone has a more than
one-kilometer range, has minimal ambient noise, and can even fly in winds
of 15 mph with gusts of up to 20 mph.
