Join today at http://www.socaltech.com/Membership --------------------------------------------------------------------------- DAQRI Selects Flex For Augmented Reality Headset Production ---- Los Angeles-based DAQRI, a startup which is developing augmented reality headsets and software, has selected contract manufacturer Flex to build its AR headsets. Flex (formerly known as Flextronics) said it will start manufacturing DAQRI's headsets in Cork, Ireland, beginning this summer. Flex also said it will manage logistics directly to the consumer and provide after-market services including repair and maintenance for DAQRI. Financial details of the deal between the companies were not announced. XPRIZE Launches Online Sci Fi Anthology ---- Los Angeles-based prize competition company XPRIZE is trying its hand out as a publisher of literature, saying today that it has launched a new online science fiction anthology site, Seat 14C, which takes a look at what the year 2037 could look like. XPRIZE said the new collection of original stories features such writers as Margaret Atwood, Gregory Benford, Paolo Bacigalupi, Bruce Sterling, Hugh Howey, and Mike Resnick. XPRIZE said the new anthology is written from the perspective of passengers onboard a flight that mysteriously lands in the year 2037, and that it will also be running a contest for the general public to submit their own short story for the online collection, and a chance to win roughly $10,000 worth of prizes. The effort is being funded by Japanese airline ANA. http://www.socaltech.com/xprize_launches_online_sci_fi_anthology/s-0070959.html Toshiba Sues Western Digital Over Unfair Competition ---- Irvine-based Western Digital has just been sued by Toshiba Corporation, which is seeking $1 billion in damages for what it says is violation of the Unfair Competition Prevention Act. According to Sohiba, it filed a lawsuit in the Tokyo District Court against Western Digital Corporation, a U.S. company, and its subsidiary Western Digital Technologies, Inc. Toshiba cited Western Digital's actions related to Toshiba's attempted sale of a joint venture. Toshiba claims that Western Digital does not hold the ownership interests in joint venture companies co-owned with SanDisk it says it does. Toshiba also claimed that Western Digital improperly obtained trade secrets from Toshiba and TMC, by transferring employees of SanDisk to WD who specifically had access to confidential information. j2 Global Completes $650M Fundraising Effort ---- Los Angeles-based j2 Global says it has completed its previously announced, $650M offering of senior unsecured notes, in a private placement, which nets the company $636.4M after expenses. j2 Global is using the new funds to pay off an existing credit facility, and also for general corporate purposes, which it says may include more acquisitions. The notes carry a 6 percent interest rate and are due in 2025. US Sees Big Bump In IPOS In First Half Of 2017 ---- The United States saw a big bump in IPOs in the first half of 2017, according to a report from E&Y issued on Tuesday afternoon. UCLA had been one of the venture capital fund's first investors.
