Santa Monica-based enterprise software developer Cornerstone OnDemand has
raised $300M in a strategic investment from private equity investor Silver
Lake, according to the company. Cornerstone OnDemand said the capital
injection will go towards funding growth initiatives, and to manage its
capital structure, including repaying existing convertible debt and

An experiment involving the first-ever, fully self-driving shuttle bus in
the nation, launched in Las Vegas yesterday, had a very bad first day on
the job on Wednesday. The NAVYA Arma shuttle bus, run by French company
Keolis, apparently smashed into a semi truck pulling out of alley shortly
after it started making its rounds about Vegas. According to local media
reports, the accident was ultimately blamed on the human driving the semi

Los Angeles-based Exym, which develops cloud-based EHR software used by
outpatient behavioral clinics, has received an investment from private
equity investor Alpine Investors. Terms of the deal were not announced.
According to Exym, the transaction is with Alpine Investors V, VI, and
VI-A, LP. As part of the deal, Exym founder Matt DeBeer will become CTO of
the company, focused on product strategy and customer advocacy, and
Alpine'sd Nick Horn will become CEO. Exym was founded in 2004. (More...

*SpaceX Loses Rocket Engine During Testing*

Hawthorne-based SpaceX lost a Merlin rocket engine during testing over the
weekend, the company disclosed on Wednesday, during a qualification test
for the engine. Those Merlin engines are at the core of SpaceX's Falcon 9
rockets. Few details were available on the test, which occurred on Sunday.
The test failure comes as SpaceX has had stunning success in launching a
string of payloads into space, with fourteen successful launches so far in

*Uber Plans Flying Taxis In Los Angeles By 2020*

On-demand ridesharing service Uber hopes to bring flying taxis to Los
Angeles by 2020, the company said this morning, and has just signed a
contract with the U.S. National Aeronautical and Space Administration
(NASA) on software that would help support those flying taxi efforts.
According to Uber, Los Angeles will be the second test market for its
ultra-high speed, 200-mile-per-hour flying taxi service, which would tap
vertical-take-off-and-landing (VTOL) aircraft developed by other companies.
