Coverage claims, especially in rural mountain areas, are estimates at best with each carrier having very different results. Depending on your needs, it can help to find out from the locals which carrier covers which areas. I've surprised many when I use my phone in the forest (just outside of Lake Arrowhead) where Verizon, T-Mobile and Cingular fail. My Sprint EVDO cards works there as well, but it falls back to the slower speed.
