You got that right. But one good thing this law may accomplish is that it
may help spur upgrades in handsfree and voice response technologies, both of
which are still sorely lacking in quality.

I guess I really went off on a bender earlier this morning... I try not to
rant on public lists, but this particular law just seems... well for lack of
a better word, stupid.

I have long been involved in what could be called advocacy groups. All the
Linux users groups I've been a member of were advocates, so were the ham
radio groups I was a part of. Each one of those groups, along with
furthering the technology and skill, pursued the balance of individual
rights and freedoms against the law.

I guess this group, a bunch of wireless zealots, has this same core mindset,
that we, collectively, enjoy the freedom to use our technologies without
encumberance. I think that is cool.

Too often in computing, the select and privileged few try to buy laws that
restrict the rights of the masses. As a Linux user, I helped to further the
spread of open source software so that I could watch DVD's on my computer.
I am paying the tax on that DVD-Rom drive to Hollywood, I might as well use
that drive with MY operating system. If you follow tech news, you remember
what took place about 5 years ago with people that eventually decrypted DVD
content on Linux. Laws and lawsuits.
This problem was because the law was created on the technology (DMCA
laws) and not on the action (theft)

My final point is just this: the law should never be about the technology,
it should be about the actions. If a cop sees a driver, cell-phone in hand,
driving badly, the ticket should be for reckless driving (action) not for
the use of a phone (technology).

(Okay, ranting over, must get to work today :)
