I believe the Covad service is to be sold as business DSL, presumably with tighter SLAs and higher $s. Earthlink is in partnership with Covad and is presently selling the "residential" version, up to 8mbps. I have a 5mbps flavor of the Earthlink product and I generally see about 4.8 down, which is great.
Earthlink has a residential VOIP bundle on the Samsung DSLAM that uses a powered copper pair...hence, voip stays up even if local power goes down. (Everyone keeps a non-powered, wired phone handy, right?) That powered copper is a feature of the Samsung, btw. Word is, if the line comes up clean, service is excellent, downstream problems are few. However, if you have noise problems, you could be in for a rough ride, but the distance specs for DSL2 are generally longer, so fewer households should fall in that category. Avoid the Zyxel, ask for a Netopia or Broadxent modem, Zyxel has had carrier problems (though I'm not sure you get a choice.) I've been trying to get an Earthlink product manager out for a socalwug talk (muni wifi or the wifi phone product), but no luck so far. Disclaimer: I do work for earthlink, on our softphone application (think Skype here): www.mindspring.com Cheers, Rod Frank Keeney wrote: > Not wireless, but probably of interest to the group. > > ------------------------------------------------------------------------ > *From:* Matt Fanady > *Subject:* [SCFN] Covad to Offer ADSL2+ in 15 Major US Markets > > The new service, which Covad is calling ADSL2+, is available in three > flavors that support 8M, 10M or 15Mbps downstream and 1Mbps upstream > of Internet access. > > The service provider has upgraded its network in 11 markets with new > DSLAMs from Samsung <http://www.samsung.com/> that support the > International Telecommunication Union's (ITU) ADSL2 specification > <http://www.itu.int/rec/T-REC-G.992.5/en>. > > ADSL2+ doubles the maximum frequency used for downstream data > transmission from 1.1 MHz to 2.2 MHz.
