I'll give it to ya pretty straight...I've been an independent consultant
most of my days:

The Earthlink DSL/line powered phone is a darn good deal when it works,
around $50 bucks for my voip + 5mbps. (The up is 768, I see 600-700 up.)
I'll also say this: the voice/DSL group just put a very senior guy on
the noise related service problems and they've identified issues with
both the Samsung DSLAM and the modems (and be _sure_ to use filters with
this fast DSL)...Covad's been very active with earthlink in debugging,
they know it will bite them, too.

So, if earthlink works out of the box (or give 'em 1 service call),
great product. If you're getting dropped carrier or variable bandwidth,
cancel and settle for something solid, but more $s, like Speakeasy. (I
pay about $130/m for speakeasy 3mbps/768 + voip, with 2 static ips;
earthlink is dynamic, of course, but that's what dyndns is for.)
